"And what might that be?" Lyrieux asked, moving his mismatched eyes to the distance where he stared aimlessly for a moment or so. He caught her showing actions of the chill that lingered through the corners of his eyes; "Are you cold? Would you like my jacket?" He offered, then, quietly.

"Perhaps so… but those people are few and far between and it is with a heavy heart that I admit, once people know me, through and through, they turn tail and run. I am not the sort of person of which folk enjoy making company with. It never gets far enough for judgement."

"Curiosity can get people into ample trouble~" He offered a small smirk; "…I shroud my answers to protect folk of my true nature, you see." A short sigh came from the young earl; "A curse disallows me to leave the gates unless the higher power behind it allows it. Besides…. it’s hardly quiet when you’re constantly plagued with the screams of the damned in your ears~" He became silence, for just a moment; facial expressions blank and unreadable before he became smiling and apparently happy once more.

"Ah, what a lovely name~ And truly? It is not often I get to hold such a conversation so it is I who must thank you; sincerely."

Laura hummed, lips pouting slightly; up close, he seemed to loom with his height. “I’ll keep it a secret for now, so you have something to look forward if we meet again.” she proposed instead. “Ah, yes, this chill is rather inconvenient, but I believe you’ll need the jacket if you’re to stay here the rest of the night. I’m grateful, though.”

Letting go of his hand after a short shake, she moved back and closer to her father’s tomb, sitting carefully at the edge of the stone. Doubts about the old stone’s ability to withstand her weight plaguing her mind. “Uhmm, what about your family? Or someone from when you were a child? They might understand your position.” suggested Laura, briefly observing a scratch between her thumb and forefinger before returning her attention back on Lyrieux.

“True.” she nodded, expression somewhat impish. “It’s a good thing that I know my way around trouble then, because I’m always curious.” One eyebrow raised, her expression hinted to the skepticism she felt. “Personally, I cannot find myself believing anything otherworldly, but you were speaking about your situation with so much conviction that it makes me wonder...‘why?’”

Puzzled by his swift change of mood, clear eyes lingered on Lyrieux. “Hmm, thank you? Yours is also very unique.” Her attention drifted to graveyard’s fence, the lights of a car visible shining weakly beyond the gates.“Have you tried to leave without this consent you mentioned before?”

Red Memorium [lauraxvictoriano]

The market was lively today. Normally only a few neighbors were there when her and her mother were present. Currently, she was tightly holding onto her mother’s hand, as they traversed through the vast market, a blue bow embellished the top of her head, wearing a blue church dress with lace trim around the neck, brim of the sleeves, and the bottom of the dress.  ☾ “Dear…” Her mother cooed softly, turning her head to face her, her other arm swinging idly, carrying a basket at her side. "Would you mind loosening your grip?" ☽

Instead of abiding, she just let go of her hand, letting out a subtle soft sigh. She wasn’t used to so many people. It made her nervous. She pouted, her cheeks puffing out, as she followed her mother closely.  Her mother laughed. It relieved her. It felt like it had been forever since she laughed, and it was one of the things that calmed her the most, besides when she sang her to sleep on the nights her father would make an untimely visit…  Her mother stopped in front of a fruit stall, lifting the basket to her hip, and began picking up choice fruits. Lillithe only stared ahead, observing. She didn’t really talk very much. She had very little to say. She twiddled her fingers as she looked around her. So many faces… It was intimidating.

"Your brother does not like me, Laura." Little could have stopped the chuckle that escaped her lips when she recognized the frustrating little whine hidden behind her friend's words.

They had left the manor right under their parents gaze. Supposedly, to make the best out of his few hours in town but he continued to dwell on problems from within the walls of her home. Laura wouldn’t be surprised if he left back for Krimson still muttering about how her brother was plotting his demise, Russell was simply the most dramatic fourteen years old boy she had ever met.

“Russ, you do remember my brother is younger than you, right?” Her tone was light and so was the playful poke her finger did to his cheek, prompting him to huff in embarrassment and herself to smile endearingly at his childish reaction. “Befriending Ru might seem like an impossible goal but you have seen how carefree he can be with me. He is really just a kid, Russell.”

“But it’s you.” He looked away and the high coquettish giggles she heard from the crowd told her his expression had captured some farmer’s daughter attentions again. Watching him miss the entire ordeal never failed to leave a small pout in her mouth, he was just too oblivious. “What if he hates me now I went out with you? When Ruben finds out he won’t even want to talk to me.”

Laura stopped in front of a stall, looking closely to the fruits on display. “Please don’t fret? Russell, Ru knows we sneaked out, he offered to help with mother if, after you left, we were to stay outside and play together.” she said. “Would you like to eat mango?” Turning on her heels to show him the fruit she picked, almost send her crashing against a girl; mango slipping from her fingers accidentally. 

“Uh, I’m sorry! are you alright?”

"Because the dead do not bring complications to the living, whereas the living exasperate what is bad into something considerably worse. The living judge coldly whereas the dead listen." Poetic, but a work-around the true reason in which he dwelled within the lucid remains of the living and the dark of the cemetery. 

"Your observations are correct, miss." The male offered a smile, thought it was somewhat cold, distant, disrupted. He took a few, well paced steps towards the female and gave a curt bow of his head, offering out his hand gently though he was wary of th sharpness of his blackened nails;

"Lyrieux Von-Prasslett… 17th Earl of Lebane. It’s a pleasure to be of your acquaintance, I’m sure."

“I could name one complication the dead can bring to the living but the same could apply to a living person.” she added absentmindedly, rubbing her palms together and pressing them against her skirt for warm.

“Still, and while I have to admit I met people who fit your description to a t, there are also those who can make things better.” Short was the list she referred to. Few ever approached her and fewer were those who stayed long enough to become part of it, but it did exist. Her brother’s name was right on top of it. “They’re worth having around and they would never offer judgement unfairly.”

She knew the observations were right -- to a degree, at least. Her mother was on friendly terms with the current guard and all the remaining Victoriano’s always kept in mind to visit Ernesto once or twice a month. Probably under different reasons, as it was really hard to believe their mother held the same resentment for Ernesto as Ruben and her did, but they all kept regular visits and not once did she remember seeing someone so young working around the area. He also didn’t quite look like someone who would work in a graveyard.

'And with good reason I thought he looked out of place', she thought with a chuckle. “I have to say your answers just keep making me more and more curious.” admitted Laura. “What drives an Earl to remain hidden within the limits of a graveyard?  Someone who looks about my same age to limit himself to the quiet company of these graves? I know I could never stand this solicitude for long.”

Amused expression still on her face, she extended her own hand to accept his. “I apologize for that; just curiosity speaking.” she said."Laura Victoriano, my pleasure really, as this conversation has just made my night.”

ᵟ A Gilded Cage ᵟ

Realization was swift to dawn on him that this would never get easier, that he would always regret caging his sister in the same manner that their father did to them both. But this was different. This was wholly and completely different. While their father wanted them hidden away, left to rot and be forgotten, Ruben wanted Laura tied down to keep her safe. He was doing so out of love.

At least, that was what he would tell himself.

Biting his tongue, he turned around and wrapped his arms around her, wanting nothing more than to dry her tears and let her go. Play it off as a joke. But he wouldn’t. He was the source of her sorrows and he always would be from this moment forward.

"I’m sorry," he whispered to her. "I just… I can’t risk it. You’ll leave me, I know you will."

 He held her like a clingy child to a mother, fingers pressed hard with the fear of being made to let go. Even with her ankle chained, Laura could still run from him. She could dart out of his reach, and the thought terrified him.

"Something will take you from me," he continued. "Either death or another person, or just your own desires… something will make you leave me…"

His hold on her tightened, and a dark look took over his ghostly pale eyes. “And I don’t want to be alone, Laura…”

It was impossible to contain her voice anymore. With his refusal, Ruben had done more damage to her than their father in eight years of abandonment. She had felt abandoned and unwanted when he had left her all alone to wash away in solitude yes, but her brother leaving her to the same cruel fate was crushing her heart. She felt betrayed.

Cry after cry left her mouth hastily as tears continued to slide down her face. “How can you speak of my desires when you never asked -- when you ignore me now I speak of them!” Her words came in broken sentences in between shallow breaths and shaking shoulder, tightly clenched hands hitting his chest now that he had turned around until even her palms felt numb.

He was supposed to be her friend, she would have trusted him blindly. She had done so and she had believed he had trusted her with the same dedication. What a fool she was.  

"You say someone will take me away as if I cannot make my own choices!" Fingers grasped his shirt and for the first time since her cries escalated, she looked directly to his eyes."I would have never leave you alone!"

She must look hideous under his gaze, with her scarred face flushed and her clear eyes irritated under continuous crying but neither her mind nor her voice cared enough to look away or stop. Already she felt no better than a broken toy ready to be discarded again.

"How could you not trust me?” she whispered, unexpectedly softer and hurt. “Do I-- does the two of us together mean so little to you that you won't hesitate to treat me as father did?"
