Eliza braced herself as best as she could for the impact that was Lauren. Surprisingly enough, she had survived their last encounter on her own with the lioness, and while it had been in a public bar, it had oddly felt like a cage to the brunette. Perhaps the slight tremble of her fingers was a little much, especially when the woman seemed innocent to those who were ignorant enough to judge her by looks alone. But Eliza knew that Lauren held certain secrets that she could use as ammunition. Their conversation at that bar had felt like a betrayal to her best friend at the time, but as she realized that sheâd failed to even remember the encounter between the two until this very moment, it could potentially impact their relationship. Eliza watched her carefully and never dared to speak up upon her arrival. Based on their previous conversation, Eliza hoped to have made it clear that while the past was their own â she would always remain behind her best friend ( turned boyfriend ). If he didnât like Lauren, Eliza believed there had to be a valid reason behind it and that was all she needed to hear. If that wasnât certain to her, the bomb she dropped moments after her arrival had only made it that much clearer to her. Slowly, her gaze shifted towards Gaige to peer at his reaction in hopes that he wasnât too angered by her failure to tell him about that encounter and how sheâd sought out answers from someone that wasnât him.Â
Whether it was owed to the alcohol he consumed that evening, or because he had more or less prepared himself for the next time heâd run into Lauren, Gaige felt calm in the face of adversity. At least more calm than he had been the last couple of times heâd encountered his ex. âInteresting, seeing you here didnât even cross my mind.â He admitted in earnest, being unable to speak for his girlfriend, however. Heâd been much too wrapped up in a night spent with Eliza that all matters of the past just faded out of sight. For weeks it had been this way; for once he wasnât preoccupied with the misery of his failed relationship, but enthusiastic about exploring a new one. There was the harsh reality, however, that there were still things that he and Eliza did not discuss. That much was made clear when Lauren revealed that the two women had spoken at some point or another. He glanced out of the corner of his eye, meeting Elizaâs gaze, but only fleetingly. A look that tried to convey that he wouldnât hold it against her, as long as she didnât hold it(whatever bomb Lauren decided to drop about his own run-in with her) against him. Though he couldnât deny it, there was a certain sense of dread that came with not knowing what details theyâd shared during their mysterious conversation. âWe were just about to leave, it was nice seeing youâŠâ Not at all a pleasant experience just being in the same room as Lauren, but if she could fake pleasantries, then so could he. And even if he wanted to boldly confirm that Eliza did indeed look breathtaking, he knew it was better not to feed into Laurenâs little scam.
There was weakness in everyone, sheâd devised in the short time sheâs been reigning over everyone she met. Even the quaint perfect couple from the pet clinic had their secrets, their flaws and thatâs what made everyone human. Perhaps Gaige knew her weakness as well but a part of her believed that he was too nice, or too hell-bent on appearing so in front of his intern. âThatâs okay. Wouldnât expect you to be paying mind to any other woman.â Of course, she could play up the beautiful new girlfriend card, she practically lived it with him, witnessed how much he really didnât like it. The things like, âwow youâre so luckyâ and âwhatâd you do to deserve her?â. It always made it look like the girl was doing him a favor by being with him and no matter how many times she insisted that they were equals..the insinuation was clear. In the same way, she could almost feel the way Eliza shrunk when she mentioned seeing her last. Werenât best friends supposed to tell each other everything? Or maybe that changed when they started dating which..she can only assume. âAre you two finally together? Iâm sure his moms absolutely adore you.â She remembered what that was like, of course. âHow are they since the ceremony?â She raises a brow to Gaige, this sickening small talk was getting even on her own nerves. Flattening out her form-fitting skirt she nods as Gaige continues to try and deflect her. âThatâs okay, you were never too fixated on talking..at least not with me.â A lie, of course. During their relationship, he always tried to talk to her and she was the deflector, it took only a few encounters with him since her arrival in Lanford to see how the roles really switched.  Now she could tell her either wanted to slap her or fuck her, how easy it would have been back then if he were like this...âI wouldnât want to ruin your date.â Although itâs unclear if she means the outing or the person.  âAt least donât let her leave without a prize. Be a shame to waste this tacky theme, wouldnât it?â
