I think one of the rudest things you can say to someone is to shut up. You're basically telling them to keep their opinions, their point of view or what they genuinely want to say out of the way just because you're kind of being a jerk and can't be polite enough to find the appropriate phrase to tell them you aren't interested. And if a parent tells you to shut up, you should do it because you seem to have to power over them - but if the roles reversed and you told your parents to shut up, you're in hell and you're disrepectful. There are other ways to ask someone to be quiet nicely...
