‘protect ya neck.’ february 2020

i drew this while watching  Ghost in the Shell, a well known film among the science fiction community. What I find intriguing about the genre is its ability to reflect real societal structures in fictional narratives. 

Here, I thought about the theme of camoflauge as a means of protection along with Audre Lorde’s quote: “the master’s tool’s will never dismantle the master’s house.” 

there is power in empathy, there is power in vulnerability, at the end of the day, protect ya neck.

what does it mean to be invisible and hyper-visible at the same time? here, I am referencing Bell Hooks' "oppositional gaze", actively looking past the simultaneous hyper-sexualization and dehumanization that has been historically placed on Black women. by distorting the perspective of the piece, I am asserting that I am supposed to be in the space, are you?
