o no what is this
“I’m ninety-six years old. I’d rather just take a pill and get it over with. Whenever I tell that to my wife, she pretends to slap me in the face. But I’m ready to go. And I’d like it to be sudden. I’ve had a good run. I was lucky enough to share my life with someone. She’s ninety now. We’ve had a lot of time together. We have seven grandchildren. Eight great-grandchildren. But there are just so many things I can’t do anymore. I have the money. I have the time. Just not the ability. Whenever I walk, everything hurts. I enjoy sitting here in the park. I think about all the friends that I’ve lost. People come talk to me. Time passes by. But I’m ready. I’m not scared of it. I’d like my soul to go to wherever the souls go.” (Barcelona, Spain)

Me, thinking they’re hosing an emaciated child down the stairs: oh jesus…
Me, realizing it is in fact our lord and savior on the cross: oh, Jesus…
i should not be laughing about that note
It’s perfectly acceptable to be a little bit in love with Hamlet as long as you’re aware he is a collossal asshole
How many times do I have to reblog posts like this and remind you people that HAMLET IS SUFFERING FROM GRIEF, LOSS, AND TRAUMA before you stop calling him names?
so story time, munchkins.
last winter I was cast as Horatio in a local production of Hamlet. Horatio’s a great character to play, because he’s a fundamentally *good* character in an extremely flawed world. And yet the biggest thing I struggled with is why Horatio was friends with Hamlet. Hamlet is often cruel and unkind to those around him, and it mystified me as to why a character as kind as Horatio would hang around Hamlet.
and the only conclusion I can come to is that the Hamlet we see in the play is not the true Hamlet. When his father died, a part of Hamlet died too. It’s alluded to by Ophelia in ‘oh what a noble mind is here o’erthrown’ and by Rosencrantz when he says ‘my lord you did love me once’. Hamlet was a funny, sweet, smart guy. This is the thing that annoys me most about whenever people are talking about Hamlet being nothing more than a mopey, whiny, emo teen. He’s not. He’s a young person suffering from depression. Depression changes your personality. It’s why I love Hamlet as a play so goddamn much. I’ve never seen any other kind of story that so perfectly encapsulates depression. I’ve been where Hamlet is. I’ve been grumpy and irritable and hard to get along with, even though I’ve been trying my best. Hamlet is a good character suffering from serious depression and trauma. He’s not an asshole.
Thanks for the story. Yes. Agreed.
letting a traumatized character have their happy ending where they can recover from their trauma will always be a thousand times more powerful than killing them off for shock value
