What I Want

I lack what people call ambition.

There is no goal I’m trying to reach,
no dream I’m desperate to achieve.

I often wonder what it is I’m lacking
that I don’t reach for more.
I still have wants—
we all do—
but they don’t drive me forward.

I don’t burn for the top.
I don’t hunger to be known.
I crave simplicity,
rhythms that make sense,
love that lingers,
a life that fits.

So I let go of the chase,
and hold close the small, steady things—
the quiet of a morning,
the warmth of a hand to hold,
the peace of just being,
