STOP ZOOMING IN
...in the autumn of 2003 sexual violence and the trafficking in Iraqi women and girls rose dramatically. The fall back analysis to explain this spike is to say that Islam is to blame because Islam turns women into sexual slaves. In fact, this is not just lazy, but wrong. Feminists who have studied the situation for women in Iraq after the US invasion have shown that a major explanation for the rise in violence and trafficking is the loss of jobs for women. Seventy percent of salaried women in Iraq had government jobs, and when entire government ministries were dismantled by the United States after its invasion of that country, women lost their jobs. This meant that they had to earn their subsistence by selling their bodies. When we look at structural factors we find that claims that “culture” and “religion” are solely responsible for women’s oppression in the Middle East fall flat. This is why imperial feminists avoid structural analysis, because such an analysis reveals that empire bears the brunt of the blame.
Imperialist Feminism (2016) by Deepa Kumar
Hi, I am Nisreen from Gaza.🍉🇵🇸
I am a mother of three children, and I support them alone after they lost their father.
My family is in a dangerous situation due to the ongoing war, and my brother, who suffers from bipolar disorder, is in critical condition due to the lack of treatment. We are in urgent need of help to escape this crisis.
Any support, no matter how small, can make a difference and save lives.
I would be extremely grateful if you could share my campaign or contribute to it. 🙏❤️

You’re starting to see more images of food in the markets, of prepared meals in community kitchens, stalls serving modified menus. The word “famine” is not being used as much. This is the plan, this is part of the modified and strategically engineered genocide.
To meet aid delivery quotas and to pacify an international audience who became increasingly more alarmed at the images of starving children, the occupation is letting in more goods. But what is being let in is certainly not quality, but quantity, and certainly of limited nutritional value.
The occupation is providing Palestinians in Gaza with sugary soft drinks, candy, instant noodles, canned goods, anything with a high calorie count in order to bulk up the population but without giving them healthy or nutritions food. Where is the chicken, the meat, vegetables and fruit? They are controlling Palestinian’s diets, making sure their consumption leads to diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and other ailments.
Our teams are still providing meals for families and on October 13, Translating Falasteen (@translatingpal) x The Sameer Project distributed 200 hot meals of rice at Jenan Camp 3 near Hamad City in Khan Younis. [X]
**With Famine on the rise, we will significantly lower tent purchases and focus on food (rice and bread) and water over the next couple of w

A lot of people hate to hear this, but they in particular really need to understand it.
If you were raised in the US, and you weren't specifically raised as a specific religion other than Christianity, then you are culturally Christian. Yes, even if you were raised atheist. Yes, I know you hate that idea. People who were raised in specific other religions in the US are usually still influenced by it, just not as thoroughly.
But specific Protestant values and attitudes have worked their way so far into US culture that we do not ever think about. (They've gotten into US Catholicism, too, Catholics elsewhere are frequently WTF at US Catholics, or so I'm told.) The "Protestant work ethic" is one of them, that "manager in your head" you should kill. Purity as a principle. The nobility of suffering (very Calvinist specifically). The prosperity culture (again, very Calvinist). A whole list. I'm honestly not good enough at Christian history to list it all. After all, I wasn't raised Christian myself. But I can see and acknowledge that I was raised in a culture with a Christian hegemony. If I pay attention, I can see where it's affected how I think. And when I do pay attention and look at it, I can change it. I can root out those patterns in my head. It's a lot of work, but it's well worth doing.
Denying that you are culturally Christian on the basis of your absence of Christian upbringing, or absence of Christianity now, just shows that you don't understand what cultural Christianity is. It is the culture that you have marinated in all your life, if you grew up in the US. The same way you've marinated in racism, classism, sexism, right on down the line (and generally they are all one thing). All of that affects you, and the only way to fix it is to acknowledge it and work on it.
This isn't a "hot take". It's just a fucking fact.
I'm posting at 10:30pm US Pacific time on a Sunday night, and fucking nobody is going to see this. Or reblog it. But I feel better having said it.
Do NOT leave this in tags!
I know the tumblr users don't like rap music discourse was months ago but I just remembered, the craziest part of the fact that the userbase on here seems to be allergic to rap is that it used to be the exact opposite. Back in like 2010-2014 there were a bunch of rappers active on here and tumblr was seen as a legitimate way to build an audience for up and coming rappers. Odd Future was on here, A$AP was on here. There were rappers that were considered "tumblrcore". Cloud Rap was a trendy sound for a few years and people attributed its popularity in part to tumblr. Like not only did tumblr users used to listen to rap, they were fucking tastemakers for a little while (for better or for worse). The current state of things only really happened post dashcon when the site started bleeding users and the only people left on here were hardcore fandom posters who for some reason all listen to the same five Mother Mother adjacent bands. The hipsters took the fucking rap music in the divorce.
Every time I see some panic article about people worshipping chatgpt, I always ask "okay, what was that person doing before they started praying to chatgpt" because the answer is almost always some shit like "well, they were in Qanon and ran a Facebook page about psychic serpents who live in the center of the earth"
Like, these were not normal people who suddenly became strange by worshipping chatgpt. These are people whose relationship to religion was already mediated by the tiktok algorithm and an ecosystem of new age grifters.
If you want an explanation of why the US has fallen so quickly to the right-wing on trans issues, look at how the New York Times - seen socially as a generally liberal outlet - coverage of trans issues has changed.
Here's NYT coverage of trans issues in the mid-1990's:
And here's NYT coverage in the mid-2020's:
30 years and we've moved this far backwards because of a conscious effort by media outlets on the center and center-left to elevate anti-trans bigotry as legitimate concerns.
Public opinion is not static, and what we learned in the fight for LGBTQ rights is that public opinion is greatly affected by how the media portrays a group or issue. We saw a huge swing in the approval of marriage equality and gay and lesbian relationships in large part because of positive media portayals of LGBTQ people.
The problem is, conservatives have also figured this out. They have had outlets like Fox and WSJ for decades, but they couldn't reach into the other side because of the toxic reputation of their outlets with anyone outside their 35% bubble. It wasn't until conservative billionaires (disguising themselves as centrists) started buying out liberals outlets and installing conservative editors in the past decade or so that this really changed. The ramp up in the past 3-4 years feels less stark because many liberals have been frog boiled into accepting conservative propaganda laundered through a "liberal" outlet.
props to her cause u couldn't pay me to give this much of a fuck
actually not ok about this
It's with a heavy but hopeful heart that I watch Palestinian families fundraiser on here, slowly accumulating the precious little money to go around that they need to survive. However, not everyone is so lucky. A lot of Palestinians that have not had that kind of luck, that did not get early verification, that did not get massive platforms behind them from large bloggers, have approached me in my inbox, asking me kindly to do what I can for them. It kills me that I have so little to give myself, but I've seen this platform collectively raise enough to change someone's life. I've made a list of Palestinian fundraisers that are extremely low on funds, in the hope that drawing attention to people who have not been lucky at all can help turn that luck around. I know most of us can't possibly give enough to get all of these families safe in one go. But please, reblog this list. Pick one or two fundraisers, give what you can, and then keep track of it. Slowly, collectively, we can make a difference in these people's lives. Share and donate as much as you can. https://docs.google.com/document/d/178EGDFKkHlh3y4TMVX82kqgITHsqtoMdNccI2f_94Os/edit?usp=sharing
