Hiiii!!! Tysm!!! That really makes my day!!! <333
Sure!!! I'd love to!
I like to use colors that fit the vibe I want to capture or the environment where the events take place. Carving Contest is both set in Fall AND Mikey-centric so it has a very warm color palette with a light cream color acting as white and a dark de-saturated purple acting as black:
For illustrations outside my comic, I like to just pick the colors to shade and highlight myself but for the sake of consistency and my sanity I use the same colors with the same layer effects across all characters and all scenes for the comic.
To illustrate, I have two little Mikey doodles which will act as models both with and without the effects for each layer. I use that same cream color from earlier as a base, so any colors on top of it will have to be warm in order to match as a result.
Next I add my base colors and then get ready to shade. All the brushes I use are from creators on Clip Studio Paint. I've included them in case you're curious :] For shading, I use darken instead of multiply because it preserves the color a bit better instead of making it come out more gray like it can with multiply.
Next up is highlights!
Next I use a multiply layer over everything to make it cohesive across all the characters and their different colors. I use a halftone brush now but when I first started I just used the bucket tool over everything. I've found I prefer the extra texture the halftones give :) I also went ahead and removed the shading and highlight colors from the right one so the halftone would be a bit easier to see.
That's how I color!! The only time I didn't use the same base colors was when Leo and Mikey were in the arcade. I changed the cream to a light blue and used a cooler toned version of all the other colors the characters had but I still used the same layer effects, even the orange multiply, then too.
I hope this was helpful!!! Thank you for the fun ask and the really sweet compliment!!!!! I hope you have a great day/night too!!!
