Ideal first date idea
The Northman (2022), dir. Robert Eggers
Somewhere along the South Coast, Tjóð looked through the windshield and said, “Next, we are going somewhere my Papa would take me as a little girl. Hopefully it is not a known destination now. It was hidden.” She asked him to turn left after a small bridge, and when there were no signs at the turn, she smiled in a way he had not seen often enough to trust. The pavement ended quickly. The car bounced down rough tracks, through puddles and ruts, past empty-looking houses and old buildings that seemed to have been abandoned to water, wind, and whatever Iceland decided to keep. Eventually there was nowhere left to drive. Tjóð looked toward the canyon and said, “Flooding has done its damage here. It is not quite the same anymore. Hopefully it is not gone. Come on.” She packed a few supplies into a backpack, took him by the arm, and led him into the rocks.
It was nearly midnight, but June had made a liar out of darkness. The canyon was bright, cold, and bearable enough, all wet stone, moss, water, and old violence softened by green. He doubted the whole thing, of course, but doubt had become part of following her. She knew him better than he wanted to believe, and after the email, after the kind little knife of being remembered by someone still unreachable, she had come to keep him from becoming wreckage. Just when it seemed the place had been washed out of memory, they came around a bend and found it: an empty pool set into the wild terrain, surrounded by mountains, rock, and falling water. Tjóð stopped, and for a moment she was only a girl again, standing inside something her father had once given her. “Just as I remember it,” she said. Then she looked at him. “Time to wash away your thoughts.”
