“Okay, how about - we make a deal?”
“I don’t know. What would we make a deal about?”
“Because th- wait have you seen Footloose?”
“No. Is that a bad thing?”
“Okay, okay dancing, we can roll with that. Wait, is your father the preacher from Footloose?”
“No. My dad is a doctor. Why?”
“Won’t deny the facts, but I’m sure every now and then having fun wouldn’t hurt. You can get good grades in school and still party hard on the weekends.”
“I do sometimes. Not a lot, but sometimes. I just know I have to study for my exams.”
“Um, yeah. There’s a guy in Ballona Creek who used to be close with my mom - way back in the day.” Sara smiled, unsure whether it would be appropriate to tell Layla about her biological dad. She knew that he supposedly was alright with people knowing, but she couldn’t be too sure, and she didn’t want to make her uncomfortable in case she knew him. “You do? That’s great! You must be excited.”
“That must be cool. It’s always nice to catch up with old friends.” Layla said deciding not push any farther noticing the uncertain look on her face. “Yeah. It feels weird though. It feels like I shouldn’t be graduating yet.”
[TEXT] What do you want for your graduation present from Jamie and me? I'm gonna need a list of at least 1006 things, just to make sure you don't guess what it is xx
[TEXT] 1006 things? I can’t even think of a top five. Can you give me a year if you’re dead set on that many options?
[TEXT] I can give you one hour and 43 minutes starting now.
[TEXT] Nevermind - Jamie came up with something. Are you excited for the big day? Nervous? Scared you’re going to trip up the steps? Jk. No one ever trips.
[TEXT] I feel like if anyone was to trip, it would be me. I just have that horrible luck.
“One thing you like that has nothing to do with your parents bonus points if they don’t like it”
“Well, I like to go out dancing and my dad doesn’t really approve of it. Does that count?”
“My obsession with robots, yes.” he answered off the cuff nodding “what?! I was kidding, seriously? who are you? name one thing you like that has nothing to do with your parents!”
“What just happened?” Layla asked looking at him with complete confusion after that outburst. “What question do you even want me to answer?”
“Well with me it’s more robot or girl” he said shrugging his shoulder with a smirk threatening his lips “Did you get this tattoo of your own free will or just because your mom owns the shop?”
“Robot? Really? It’s that bad?” She said as a smile spread on her lips. “Yeah. My mother had kind of planned out tattoos for me as soon as I was born.”
“Are they aware that you are in fact a girl? because guys are stupid - I know I am one” Ford spoke in his usual dry tone “The details are not important” he said dismissively. As she showed her tattoo he raised a brow “I guess it’s true, literally everyone has a tattoo these days”
“I guess I wouldn’t know. Although I don’t think it’s that hard to tell.” She said turning her eyes to the floor. “Unless you seriously think it’s that hard?” She looked up to see him examine her tattoo. “It helps that my mom owns a tattoo parlor. I don’t know very many people that have them.”

“Yeah it is,” she agreed and looked at Layla with a kind smile, recognizing the uncertainty in her voice as her being afraid she was overstepping, which she wasn’t. “I actually moved to Los Angeles when I was 18 and then moved here because I kind of have family here.” She smiled reassuringly. “Do you go to school here?”
“’Kind of have family here?’ I don’t understand.” She said glad that Sara was okay with her asking questions. “Yeah. I graduate in a few days.”
“So screw his expectations. you need to get laid and relax a little kid, otherwise you’re gonna be one of those kids who has a nervous break down and ends up pretending to be gene simmons in a fountain - don’t be that kid. Live a little, get a tattoo, hell I could do that for you right now”
“Laid? I can’t even get a guy to look at me.” Layla laughed before his continuing. “Gene Simmons? What brings that guy to mind? And I already have one.” She said pointing to the back of her neck.
“When was the last time you got a grade below an A and didn’t freak out”
“Point taken, but that’s because my father is a doctor and has high expectations.”
“You. Are you really going to argue on this?”
“Yes because I’m studying for my finals. That doesn’t make me a nerd.”
“Why do you have to do it here? There are libraries and coffee shops you could go to. when I went to school the nerds did not hang out in tattoo shops”
“Because my mom owns the shop. I think that gives me the right to study while I wait here for her. And who are you calling a nerd?”
“I think I’m too hungover talk about this with you right now”
“Sorry to further dampen your morning, but I need someplace to sit and study.”
