“aaron is a unisex name!’ she protested, lip curling indignantly. “sorry. seriously. i’ll try to be more, sensitive, inclusive, adjective, whatever.” she played with the skin of her thumb absentmindedly, not looking up from the sand. “besides i’m tired of your dirty jokes and if you can’t at least try to make one it’s not worth me hitting you.” she said, trying to force a laugh to dissipate the tension coiled in her stomach. her fingers plucked at guitar strings, nervously trying to establish solid ground. “i don’t know.” she said, falling back. showing someone a song, she felt, was like giving her a sneak peek into her soul. she wasn’t sure if she could even handle that kind of vulnerability. “maybe. show me and i’ll decide. promise.”
“ don’t sweat it, babe, ” he chuckled softly, “ it’s probably hard to keep track of all my dates. it’s a wonder you haven’t just started to refer to them by number. ” alek could sense her hesitance in playing her song for him, and he understood why. a lot of the songs he’d written had been intensely personal as well, delving deeper into his psyche than he’d ever let anyone in before, and the thought of people he knew hearing them kind of made his skin crawl a little. but he wanted his music out in the world more than he was afraid of giving people a glimpse into his head, and so it wasn’t a hard decision to pull his phone out, scrolling through his music library until he found the song he was looking for. “ this one’s called headspace, and so far no one’s heard it except, you know, the people who helped me record and mix it, so. you better feel special, young lady. ”
