lottie wasn’t one to bother someone minding their own business, as she tended to hate when people did that to her, but the girl looked familiar from school; was she from science class or maybe french? it didn’t really matter. “oops, i’m sorry i didn’t mean to surprise you there. you just looked a bit upset, wanted to make sure you’re alright.” she relaxed for a moment before continuing to answer adrian’s question with a question, “do you really think you are the only one from school to find a private oasis in brooklyn?”
“upset?” adrian said, eyebrows raising in surprise. she supposed she did have that kind of face, chubby cheeks and pitiful eyes. now that she thought about it, she’d probably fit in wonderfully in an aspca commercial. she laughed awkwardly, hands playing with the edge of her sweater. “no i didn’t think that all, brooklyn’s just a big neighborhood and i had never seen anyone else hanging out on the beach. at least at this time of year.”

gabriella raised an eyebrow, looking over at the other. “ write a song ? ” she had an amused smirk on her lips. “ kind of cliche, yes. ” she said with a dry laugh. “ well, are you any good ? show me what you did by now. ”
adrian seized up in fear. she could feel her whole body freezing from the tops of her toes to the tip of her noes, and her heart along with it. “i’m really not that good.” she said, shaking her hands. “besides wouldn’t you much rather listen to the dulcet tones of-” she look quickly trying to discern any song in her distance. “-slipknot!” she said, gesturing towards the group on the beach, bedecked in black and blasting some variation of heavy metal.
lcssesen:
“ his name is aaron, ” he corrected, schooling his expression into a disapproving frown. “ it’s 2017, adrian. i can go out on dates with boys if i want. ” but he wasn’t actually chastising her, the stern expression giving way to a smile easily enough as he shook his head lightly. laughing as she smacked his hands away, he lifted them up in a gesture of surrender before pointedly crossing his arms, a non-verbal promise to keep his hands to himself. “ i feel like there’s potential for a dirty joke somewhere in there, but it’s eluding me, so let’s just pretend i did crack and dirty joke and you can hit me and we’ll call it a day. ” uncrossing his arms, he laid back onto the soft sand, arms propped behind his head like a pillow. “ will you give me a little preview if i let you listen to one of mine? ”
“aaron is a unisex name!’ she protested, lip curling indignantly. “sorry. seriously. i’ll try to be more, sensitive, inclusive, adjective, whatever.” she played with the skin of her thumb absentmindedly, not looking up from the sand. “besides i’m tired of your dirty jokes and if you can’t at least try to make one it’s not worth me hitting you.” she said, trying to force a laugh to dissipate the tension coiled in her stomach. her fingers plucked at guitar strings, nervously trying to establish solid ground. “i don’t know.” she said, falling back. showing someone a song, she felt, was like giving her a sneak peek into her soul. she wasn’t sure if she could even handle that kind of vulnerability. “maybe. show me and i’ll decide. promise.”

“ i could be fucking two people tonight but instead i chose to sit out here with you, ” he pointed out, although the ghost of a smile on his face was indication that he wasn’t actually as bothered by skipping out on his date as he pretended to be. “ do you really think i’m the serenading type? ouch, adrian, i thought you knew me better than that. besides, i can guarantee that aaron will call me in the morning and we’ll pick up right where we left off. ” both his tone and expression were smug, and he didn’t resist as she took the guitar back, leaning back with his hands behind him to support his weight. “ i promise i can actually play the guitar. and the drums, and the bass, and the piano. been trying to familiarise myself with the keyboard too. ” his gaze fell onto her abandoned notes, and he tilted his head in that direction, gesturing to the papers. “ what are you working on? ”
laughter seemed to come hand in hand with alek. whether it was at him or with him. she couldn’t get over how picturesque the scene felt. and how funny it was their friendship, peculiar as it was had come from her telling him that, no offense, but she wasn’t going to sleep with him in a million years. “is her name actually aaron?” she said, raising an eyebrow. “or did you just make that up on the spot.” she nodded at him, impressed, not that she’d give him the satisfaction. “hey, hey, hey!” she said smacking his hands away from the notebook as she moved to sit on top of it. “you can’t look at that. not yet at least. it’s not done, i mean not very good really, but not done at all. what is it with you and the grabby hands?” she pouted.
cvrlas:
carla was silent after her apology. a part of her was telling her that she should forgive her, but the stubborn side of her told her that if she did that she’d be doing no one a favor.❝just don’t it happen again.❞
she released a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding as carla spoke. quite frankly she wanted nothing more than to get out of there but her tongue was hard to control. “i really am trying, just so you know, to not be that person i used to be.” she didn’t even know why she felt the need to justify herself to carla.
gvbricllas:
gabriella sat down beside the girl. adrian wasn’t someone she’d usually hang out with, but she had nothing to lose at the moment. “ well, trust me, it was lame. luckily i was around to save the day. what are you even doing out here all alone ? ”
“i um.” this, was embarrassing. she tugged at the neck of her sweater anxiously. “it’s stupid. i was trying to write a song.” she says tracing her finger in the sand. “cliche right?” she laughed trying to disspiate her own flush. "it's just something i'm into, music, i mean."
lcssesen:
“ bad decisions? me? you must have me mistaken for someone else, i only ever make fun decisions, never bad ones, ” he feigned ignorance, turning towards her with an expression that looked genuinely clueless before the facade is broken by a wide grin stretching across his lips. he crushed the now-empty can in his hand, letting it drop onto the sand before wiping his hand off on his jeans. “ oh no, my luck is just fine, don’t worry your pretty little head about it. we were going to head back to someone’s place for some fun, all three of us, if you catch my drift. but i saw you and figured you needed my company more than they did–– hey, maybe i do make bad decisions after all. ” his laughter was teasing, but then his gaze fell onto the guitar that laid abandoned and he reached for it, plucking the strings lightly before playing a few chords. “ you need any help? ”
adrian scoffed, he really did push his luck sometimes. she pushed her bare heels into the sand on the end of the blanket, letting comfortable silence overtake her for a moment. “are you calling me a bad decision?” she laughed turning over onto her stomach to look at him. she’s tearing at a piece of paper now, hands never stilling, something about her is always in constant motion. stillness doesn’t suit her. she surveyed him, eyes squinted in disbelief. “since when can you play guitar? or is this just a ploy. if you really want to impress someone go over there and serenade your date back into your bed.” she laughs, pulling the guitar from his grasp. she drummed her hands on the bod absentmindedly strumming a few chords.
gvbricllas:
gabriella raised an eyebrow, looking over at the girl, crossing her arms. “ you’re easy to scare, noted. ” she scoffed. “ do you own brooklyn or something ? i’m here with my parents. it’s your lucky day, though, because i’m practically the best company out there and you seemed kind of lame all alone out here. so, you’re welcome. ”
adrian moved over on her blanket making room for gabriella. “okay then.” she said. the scene is tense and awkward, she doesn’t know how to make friends without insulting someone. and being that’s a person she’s trying to forget, her friends have become little to none. “i don’t think it was that lame. i just like being alone.”
cvrlas:
carla did her best to keep her expression stoic. she wanted oh-so badly to smirk at someone she hated being a complete utter dork. she crossed her arms over her chest and sent her a tight-lipped smile. ❝is this your pathetic way to make up for everything that’s happened in the past? nice try, but i can see right through you,❞ she grumbled.
adrian chewed at the inside of her cheek, back going a little straighter. she didn’t know what to say, defending herself seemed useless. especially since carla was right. guilt pooled in her like red blood and she could never shake it, no matter how hard she tried. “i really am sorry.” she said.
lcssesen:
“ nope, not jesus, just alek, ” the boy teased, dropping onto the sand next to the petite girl, a half-empty can of beer dangling from his hand. “ what’s with the tone? most people are happy when i show up, they don’t question it. ” he paused, lifting the can to his mouth and tipping it back, finishing the drink in one go and wiping stray droplets of beer off his chin with the back of his hand. “ but if you must know, i was going to go skinny dipping with my date, but they’re a little preoccupied at the moment. ” alek jerked his head in the direction of a couple giggling and making out not too far away from where they were sat.
adrian rolled her eyes. he should write a book of proverbs, she thinks, he’d make a fortune. the back-and-forth between them is always like this. he says something witty and vaguely flirtatious, she pretends it annoys her and they wash, rinse, repeat. truthfully she’s grateful for his company. aside from alek, loneliness is a friend of hers. “ah i knew i heard the sound of bad decisions being made from somewhere. i should’ve known it was you.” she grinned softly as dusk reaches the beach. the sky goes blue, to orange, to pink and she falls back on her blanket. “tough luck. maybe next time huh?”
katerinanavarro:
she stood tall, unapologetically speaking, ❝ so? i’m allowed to go wherever i wish, honey, ❞ katerina added. ❝ unless you’re stalking me, which would be a very unfortunate thing because my bodyguards will certainly take care of that! ❞ she took a step forward, standing taller on her louboutins. the ice queen examined the girl up and down, before speaking once again. ❝ why are you so obsessed with me? ❞
“okay okay i get it. i understand. sorry.” she said eyes widening. she shouldn’t have been surprised. of all the words she exchanged with katerina she couldn’t count one that wasn’t at least laced with virulence. “i’m not obsessed with you. this is a beach, it’s public property. go about your business. as you were captain.”
cvrlas:
softball practice was always exhausting, carla would leave there more stressed and tense than she was before. even after a quick shower in the locker rooms she still felt disgusting with disheveled hair and arms and legs that felt like they had been squeezed way too hard. she made her way across the field to where she parked her car, only to find someone sitting on the hood. ❝you know,❞ she started saying, brushing some of her hair back, ❝it’s rude to sit there without my permission. i paid good money for it to be repainted last week, it would be a shame…if someone ruined it again.❞
“fuck!” she jumped in surprise her book tumbling onto the pavement. her jaw dropped in uncomfortable shock. “i-” she looked back towards the car and peered over the parking lot to see her car, the same color, sitting at the end of the lot. she bent to pick up her book, head hanging in shame. “i’m sorry.” she said. “our cars look the same, ish. and i was really involved in a book. i’ll pay for it, seriously i will.” her mouth clenched awkwardly. she already knew carla didn’t like her, she wasn’t in any rush to add more fuel to the fire.
it’s autumn in new york and the coney island beach is relatively deserted, at least compared to the massive influx of summers. adrian presses the butt of her pen to her lips and furrows her brows for a moment, her guitar laying abandoned across her blanket. she groans in frustration, scribbling furiously at the notebook. sighing she drops her head to watch the distant sea tug in and out of the sand laboriously. she turns up her headphones selecting a cookie-cutter indie folk song. fingers drum on the edge of her shoulder and she jumps in surprise. “jesus!” she says. “you scared me. what are you doing here? i’ve never seen anybody from the school in brooklyn.”
