Using Microsoft OneNote for Thesis Writing
While I am definitely a paper and pen kind of person, I have found using OneNote to be incredibly useful. For me, it started when most of my readings for classes were PDF scans of texts and articles and printing them all out was getting expensive. So, enter OneNote where you can load a “print out” of a PDF and highlight and make notes directly on the page. This is still what I use it for primarily. Some people also use it for a bujo.
Since I am beginning to work on my Masters thesis this summer, I wanted something to help me stay organized and have my materials in one place. I set up my OneNote notebooks per semester and the tabs for my different classes, so I preemptively created a notebook for Fall 2017 and a tab for my thesis. I divided it into four pages: my home page of sorts and pages for my three primary texts (which may include the text itself and/or secondary sources). My home page I use as mood board/notes to self section. I have a To Do list, questions to ask my adviser, and my reading list. OneNote has a bullet type function where you can check of boxes as you go. I added pictures to keep me happy and motivated while I work. Mainly picture from my Ireland trip (which relates to my Medieval-centric project) along with a picture of my stack of books!
midnight–flowers replied to your post “Tomorrow’s goals…”
what do you use one note for?
@midnight–flowers I use it for pretty much everything now! I use it like Word and Google Drive or Evernote rolled into one, since it has the capabilities of Word (writing notes, drawing notes, adding images, labeling, etc) but it saves everything in real time on the cloud like Google Drive. It’s super convenient! And aesthetically very pleasing, since you can upload or even just paste in images (I usually copy and paste images in, super easy!), and you can draw on them or write little notes and add them wherever you want. You can highlight on documents that you’ve added in, and even change the background color and add different size notebook paper or grid paper to the background. The files are infinite size, so it changes based on how much you add, it’s really physically pleasing because you don’t feel constricted to a specific size or length. It’s free if you have Office suite (although I might have to buy it soon bc my Office account expired and my hacked version is no longer hacking it, lol). They even have an app that works really well! They sync up nicely. Something I do a lot is take photo scans with an app called Take Photo (there’s a ton of apps that do this) and I’ll save it into One Note. So if I get a handout in class, or I take handwritten notes, I can just take a photo/scan of them and add them in there so everything is available to me at all times, even if I don’t have my physical notes on me. I do that with pdfs profs give us in class or online too. Or if we have a powerpoint presentation, I’ll add it in there and then add my own notes off to the side. But I use it for more than school! It’s good for mind mapping and just idea vomiting with lots of images and text and things you just want to remember. I know a lot of people use it as a bullet journal too! You can even save audio files to it and move them around on the page so that if you have a lecture or something that you wanna add to a certain section of your notes, you can do that! Idk I just really love it! It’s made my notes a LOT better and more organized. Great for revision!
How I used Microsoft OneNote for A levels
Doing only STEM subjects, OneNote may not seem as useful but I was actually able to get a lot out of it. It was especially useful when it came to physics, chemistry and my UCAS application.
Notebooks
I had a notebook for each of my subjects and another one for school commitments. Looking back, it would have been a better idea to make Universities/UCAS be its own notebook. I’ll just be focusing on subject in this post.
Sections
My first section for subjects was my module one. This had a page for the syllabus and pages for each modules summary. I always recommend having a copy of the syllabus because it surprises people how many things they learn that they don’t need to necessarily know or they don’t need the definition just an understanding. Also there are very specific things in the syllabus that you wonder why they include but its nice to know in case its your year that it comes up. My other folder was my notes one. It was filled with random messy notes that I accumulated when trying to understand part of the course as well as things I needed to remember.
Module summaries
I named the pages after the part of the module it was about e.g. Module 2, Module 3 etc. I liked this as past papers contents correspond to certain modules. I organised the pages like so:
Definitions: These came straight from the syllabus to find all the things we needed to know and I used past papers and my textbook to get good definitions. Definitions can be so important. The marks can add up when you don’t know your laws. Having a complete list of them can be so helpful to make sure you actually know them by having to write them down and also being able to easily go over them.
Things I Always Forget: These are small facts, trends, reactions, definitions or concepts that I was prone to forgetting. I would realise this when going through the syllabus or doing past papers. I keep a list of them for each module to make them easy to look at and remind myself about when revising. The section was especially helpful before exams/mocks so that I could quickly remind myself or difficult concepts before going in. I really recommend this.
Equations: Again, I got these from the syllabus and kept them on hand to remind myself periodically and before I went for my mocks or exams. These can be rather difficult to type but OneNote does have an equation feature. Another option is to write the list and scan a picture or get it from the internet. This wasn’t as important for physics as most equations are in the formula books but it was helpful for chemistry. Especially so for Module 2 equations that don’t come up as much.
Experiments: This was more useful for physics as experiments are so important. It is quite good to be able to know you can write a complete description of the experiments by making the list as you revise. Again it helps to have them all in one place to go over periodically and before exams. I also really recommend this because paper 3 and the 6 markers can need you to understand these well.
Reactions: This is definitely only for chemistry but I try to keep it short by typing the reactants, the conditions and the products. I didn’t go back to this part a lot because I don’t have a big problem with reactions. if you have the patience you can use subscript and superscript too.
I hope this was helpful!

Note taking for medical students on OneNote!
I’ve been asked a few times how I make my lecture notes so I thought I’d make a post about it.
First thing’s first: I use OneNote on the surface Pro! I absolutely love it - it is great for organisation - and I organise subjects into sections like this:
On the first page of each section, I have a list of learning objectives for that module, and then I make a page for each learning objective, and it ends up looking a bit like this (here is an example from my Genitourinary section) I’ve highlighted and arrowed some examples
So - for each lecture I have a template which covers most of the core aspects of a disease (aetiology, patho, epidemiology, treatment etc) and as the lecturer talks I make notes in the relevant paragraphs - I did this because my lecture notes used to just look like bodies of nonsensical text which I had to spend time organising and prioritising - my template for lecture notes looks like this:
And then when I get home, usually a few weeks after the lecture (It’s better to do it straight away but I struggle with doing that, so i normally do it in my revision) I tidy up all the notes, add colours and pictures so that the finished product looks like this:
Those are my Huntington’s disease notes that I made today as an example.
So that’s how I make notes and it has helped me so, so so much with organising this year - if you have OneNote try it out and see if it works for you :)
Hello Everyone,
I’m Brianna and this is my first ever masterpost! I have decided to show you how to use one note for a student, I’m a first-year psychology student and have found one note extremely useful.
I have a notebook for each subject as well as an overview/planner. This enables me to be able to organise everything very effectively. Each notebook is colour coded, I use the same system in my bullet journal to distinguish subjects.
Then I have created a semester planner, with a tab for each subject. I include any readings, assignment and exams I have. When using one note there are tags, much similar to the bullet journal, for my planner in front of every task I have an ‘to do’ box, this helps me prioritise and understand on a large scale of what I have to do.
For the other sections of the College Overview, I have a highlighting code, which is very important for me because I often forget it, as well as my timetable and my study planner. If you would like me to discuss these more in-depth, please let me know!
In my class notebooks, I have five sections; Lectures, Tutorials, Workshops, Textbook Notes, and assignments. In all sections but the assignment one, I have a page for each week. In these pages I write all my class notes down, this makes it extremely easy for exams when I am revising!
As a bonus One Note automatically syncs with your Microsoft account, thus if your computer crashes and deletes everything, all your notes will be safe!
Thank you so much for reading my masterpost! if you have any questions about one note or anything else please feel free to message me! much love, bri xx

⭐how i stay organised ⭐
Hey dudes, today I wanna share how I stayed organised in my first year of uni. This system worked super well for me and going into my second year I wanna try new systems, but I thought I would share because it may help or inspire you.
🌟 Onenote
This is my main organisation system and place where all my uni work goes! Im gonna show picture of my last year set up and what ive altered this year to work best for me. This is the most important part of my organisation system!
*SEMESTER CALENDAR*
What I do is make a table with my classes and their colour code going along the top and each of the weeks within the semester going down the side (I also add the dates). When I finish a week I make the boxes another colour so I can see where im up to. This is where I keep all the tasks I need to do each week like textbook readings, assessment and modules I need to complete. This year im also adding when ive got my tutorials so I know when I need to be on campus. So I have a key for all my stuff: for my readings and other tasks I use the to-do box tag a, for my assessment I use the important/star tag and for my tutorials I use the cute little rose tag. A thing to note is that last year I had to participate in psych research studies so theres another box called studies in the table where I tracked that.
In the same notebook i also have my timetable and the yearly calendar for my uni. i use to also have a grades and thoughts tab but i never used it cause i track both on my phone notes.

2019 layout + scroll through (not yet completed but you get the gist):
*CLASS BOOKS*
For all my class notebooks I have a syllabus tab, a textbook tab and a tutorial tab. In my syllabus tab I have the dates of each week and what we are learning in the lecture & tutorial, what the readings are and if there is an assignment due. In my textbook tab I just keep all my reading notes. Then for my tutorials tab I just take class tute notes. You may be wondering where I keep my lecture notes, I type them out in word and save them to my class folder. Nothing really has changed here from last year.

🌟 Edo Agenda
This is a great website (plus app) that I feel like not a lot of people know about! This is by far the best calendar I have ever used, it is so practical, simple and functional.
Heres an example of mine from last year.
How I use it is each class has a colour that is the same as on onenote. Each week i look at my onenote trimester calendar/table and put down all the tasks i need to complete on certain days and when i should start assignments and studying. I add the task using the ‘task’ function that gives you a checkbox. When its completed I check it off. Anytime that I had an exam I would add it as an ‘event’. A great function is that you can drag tasks between days making it super easy to reorganise your week.
Heres a little walk through of the functions i use:
