After your really fascinating article on Naoto from P4, do you have a plan to look at how other characters from the game were translated like Kanji?

I gave particular attention to Naoto's case specifically because it's the one that goes all the way into "people are practically arguing about two completely separate things, and a lot of this could be significantly simplified if the issues with the translation were brought up." Since I didn't get the impression that this level of confusion applies to the other characters, I unfortunately don't have any plans to write any other articles about Persona 4 at the moment, since D.A. and I have a lot of other topics we want to cover too (along with other things unrelated to the site that are keeping us busy). But I do definitely think Persona 4's official translation actually has a lot of general issues that people often don't know about, and I do like the series myself, so I wouldn't rule out the idea of touching on another topic regarding the game someday! H.C.'s revised Saint Tail anime analysis will unfortunately be have to put on hold again, partially due to some unforeseen things that came up over the holiday break, but also partially because D.A. has two articles in the pipeline and H.C. would like to have at least one more article by D.A. up before another one of her own, otherwise at this rate she's going to dominate the entire site. 💦 But she is hoping to have it out at least before next March, because if she doesn't, it'll be a whole two years since the first version went up...

Since a remaster of the Ace Attorney Investigations games was announced yesterday (very exciting!), it seems a lot of people have been talking about Ace Attorney game pacing, especially with the first AAI game's infamous final case. But there is one thing that probably isn't brought up enough in these discussions, which is:

Ace Attorney games print text at a rate made for Japanese text, but equivalent English sentences can have approximately double the amount of text characters. But the DS versions of the games didn't do anything about this in localization, meaning if you played an Ace Attorney game in English on the DS...

...you were playing the game at around half the speed it was originally supposed to be played at.

Example: The Japanese line on the left is 16 characters, but the English one on the right is 32 -- but they both print at the same speed.

Which means that, yes, all of those most tedious and draggy parts of all of those cases you remember on the DS were twice as long as they were supposed to be! (To put things in perspective, most long boxes in the Japanese version would print faster than you could read them in your head, but most of them in English will take longer to print than it would take to even read the words out loud.)

This was (somewhat) addressed in the later games and ports for the 3DS and after, which gave you the option to force finish the line by tapping again (something that used to only be available for already-read lines). It doesn't do much about the fact you do still have to put up with it to get the most out of lines that are presented with varying speeds, but it at least provides a way to get through parts that are taking way longer than they really should. This is one of the biggest reasons H.C. (who's been playing Ace Attorney games since they were still on the DS) has a very hard time recommending the original DS versions to people unless they have a 100% save file pre-loaded, because she feels it's that damaging to the experience.

So in fact, this might actually be one of the most important QoL changes in the remastered ports!

Around a year ago, I made a series of recap-and-analysis posts for the Saint Tail manga in light of the fact it was in a very bad situation

Well, it took way longer than it probably should have, but H.C. has finally finished her rewritten version of the Saint Tail manga analysis (both first and second halves)! The analysis has been completely reworked from the ground up -- only about 5% of the text is directly from the old versions -- and is much more thorough and cohesive than before, using the recently retranslated version as a base and prioritizing analysis over recap. (Although it may repeat itself a little too much. I apologize about that -H.C.)

A version more geared towards the anime is still in the works, since H.C. wants to give it the treatment it properly deserves, but that one will be a little while longer. But she would still like to finish it before the end of the year, and until then, please enjoy the new and improved manga analysis (and we're very, very sorry for the wait!)
