Feminine countries:

(feminine countries use en instead of à la for some reason?)

But how do I tell what gender a country is?

Simple. Feminine countries end in an E and masculine countries don’t. There are like 6 exceptions for you to memorize, but considering there are 196ish countries, it could be worse.

Alt-codes for French accents

Salut! I realized maybe not everyone knows about these, so I thought I’d introduce some of the alt-codes for French letters with accents! Alt-codes can be used for a lot of different symbols, but we’ll focus on common French letters today. 

How to use alt-codes: You need to have a keyboard with a number pad on the right side, like the one above. While holding down the alt key (bottom left), you type in the 4-digit code for the letter you want to type. For example, the alt-code for à is alt-0224. I’ve memorized the more common ones, but there are a few I need to look up every once in awhile; just search “alt-codes french” on Google and it should give you a website with a chart (or come back to my post😉) !

You might notice that a lot of these follow some sort of pattern - I’ve found it really useful to know that certain letters always start with the same 3 numbers. A’s are 022, e’s and i’s start with 023, and o’s and u’s start with 024. All of them start with 02. If you can’t remember exactly what the code is and you don’t feel like looking it up (sometimes I like the challenge), you can mess around with the numbers and figure it out!
