We continue the rules for the feminime words:

- The ambiguous:   Words that do not have a gender, and can thus be written with both feminine and masculine articles, without changing the definition of the noun. Lente (lens), mar (sea), arte (art), dote (dowry), azúcar (sugar), etc.

- The commons:   Words with the same ending for both genders.   Estudiante (student), dentista (dentist), paciente (patient), periodista (journalist), gerente (manager), cliente (client), joven (teen), conserje (janitor), guía (guide), etc.

General rules for femenine words: 

1. The majority of words that end with –a. Casa (house), puerta (door), cabeza (head), hija (daughter), ropa (clothes), palma (palm), tienda (store), pluma (feather), etc

2. All words that end with -ción, -sión, -dad, -tud, -red.   Canción (song), tensión (tensión), ciudad (city), actitud (attitude), pared (wall), etc

3. Many words ending in –e and –umbre. Especie (species), fase (stage), base (base), peste (plague), planicie (plain), costumbre (habit), cumbre (top), incertidumbre (uncertainty), etc

4. These exceptions Moto (motorbike), foto (photo), mano (hand).

5. Words that relate to science, arts and writing. Medicina (medicine), gramática (grammar), Escultura (sculpture), etc.

General rules for masculine words:   1. Words that end with –o.  Camino (path), año (year), hijo (son/child), hermano (brother), etc.   2. The majority of words that end with –s. Paréntesis (Parenthesis), análisis (analysis), país (country), mes (month), interés (interest), etc.   3. The majority of words that end with –n. Almacén (store), botón (button), camión (truck), volcán (volcano), corazón (heart), etc.   4. Many words that end with –l. Papel (paper), pastel (pastry), cartel (poster), hotel (hotel), cancel (cancellation), etc.   5. The majority of words that originate from Greek, ending in –a, –ma, –grama. Día (day), mapa (map), problema (problem), clima (climate), sistema (system), programa (program), diagrama (diagram), dilema (dilema), panorama (panorama), telegrama (telegram), etc.   6. The majority of words that end with –r.  Olor (smell), comedor (dining room), motor (motor), corredor (runner), lugar (place), professor (professor), etc.

Beginner Spanish course

This course for beginners is perfect if you start learning Spanish from scratch, or when you have a basic or informal knowledge of the Spanish language. The Spanish lessons for beginners start with the alphabet, numbers, basic vocabulary and greetings. From there we take you to the present tense, studying the regular and irregular verbs in the present tense. We complement this with adjectives and prepositions, so that you can form phrases. In the final phase of the beginner’s lessons you learn how to use the past tense (preterit vs. indefinite time). You will also make a start with the future tense. Finishing the Spanish course for beginners, you are able to hold a basic conversation, being able to use the present and past tense in combination with basic vocabulary and the right adjectives and prepositions.
