I don’t remember an exact moment of realisation, however, within the last few years, I have had a 13-month relationship, where my ex-partner used to say, “oh, I’d definitely love a little me - or more - running around one day” (yes, those exact words!). This definitely made me think to myself, “I’m sorry - a little HIM?!”, and the thought really brought me down. I thought him saying that was bad enough, however, he once took me with him to London (I live in the UK, so it’s not an over the sea trip or anything), to see this rich friend of his father’s, and, of course, I was the trophy he had to show off. Not long after settling down at a table in this posh underground jazz club, this rich mate of his father’s turns to him and says, “so do you have any children?”, whilst looking at my ex, and he (ex) laughed about it and said “no, not yet”. The man got a little more serious and said, “Hmph. When I was your age, I had two children.” (my ex was 25 then, I was only 18!), and he looked at me almost spitefully, as if to say I’m nothing without a destroyed body and a ruined life just because I “should” be polluting my body with my exe’s genes.
Looking back, this was one of the worst experiences as someone who was not at all sure they wanted to ever be a victim of pregnancy. However, now, with my current partner of over 3 years, I can gladly say that we are both aware of the dangers of creating a life, and we don’t want to be involved in it. There’s too much at stake.
