I've got mixed feelings about Boompala... on one hand it is a banger, on the other hand it feels like it could have been so much better...
The idea of building a song off macarena is a really good one. Macarena by itself is fun and addictive, the melody is solid and dance catchy... the added layering made it feel fresh, so that part of the song was perfect.
My first issue is with the boompala part... it didn't have enough melodically to tie back into macarena, felt a little too flat to me. Considering that is the original bit of the song, I'm disappointed.
Now that we have a kpop song based off macarena we likely won't see another, meaning this effectively wasted an amazing sample and concept...
Second complaint is about the lyrics. Catchy sure, but I sure am getting fed up with this trend of songs with trash/ joke lyrics. Not even talking about how Boompala is not a word and fans are still theorizing about wtf it means (exorcism chant to ward off bad spirits? Who knows), I'm talking about "Pause for a second like comma/ Put the fear to bed, pajama" I fucking hate you.
Are we out of our minds entirely? What are we even doing here? This is what negative effort lyrics looks like. Can Hybe not pay for a lyricist nowadays?? Is their lyricist thesaurus?? Fuck off
A positive note is that the choreo is super catchy and I LOVE it, very VERY well done.
-Immediately followed by a negative note, that the music video sucks ass. The dance video is so much better than the music video, it's baffling. Sure this happens sometimes, but how did the editor fumble so badly? Nothing is centered, odd angles, random shots of members opening cabinet doors and shit, cutting out some of the best dance parts (like the guanyin dance), chopping other dance parts so it's unsatisfying, flooding the screen with replicas of the members to make sure you never manage to focus on whatever they're doing, no background dancers just random extras doing whatever, effects that look like AI, it's a fucking mess.
A song that is so fun, a dance that is so fun, the members obviously love it, but at the same time it feels to me like this is the production company's version of diarrhea. The production team minus the girls and choreographer put zero effort into this song, absolutely none.
