Is it just me, or is this really unlike mario to do?

Don't get me wrong, it's a good bit of comedy, it just feels a little too mean for Mario of all people, even if it's towards bowser

Mario's a friendly guy, always willing to give everyone a shot, even to bowser, despite how often he causes trouble

I guess that's just par for the course with the movie-verse being different from the games-verse... The personalities end up being just a tad off, whether because the movie(s) are set at an early point in time so they have to "build up" to their real, in-games personalities, or just for comedy reasons, or for whatever other reason

(Genuinely the only game i think i can place mario being near this level of "mean" is in bowser's fury, but i'd argue that even in that game it almost feels out of character)

Anyway, movie's looking great, can't wait to go see it, even despite the mild and really unimportant nitpicks i have. tl;dr don't listen to me, i'm a negative nancy

This is called “a character arc.”

The movies are taking us through how Mario becomes the Mario we know and love today.

Each film is introducing his character flaws and giving him something to work towards improving.

Remember that in the first film he hated mushrooms and he had to learn to be okay with them to use their power.

He also had worries of failing and being able to fulfill his dreams. That’s why they teamed him up with Donkey Kong who was his narrative foil in a lot of ways.

Mario still being salty that Bowser tried to murder his brother is absolutely understandable from where we are in his character journey.

Give it time, you can’t just expect everything to be 100% as the games are right off the bat. That’s not narratively interesting or good storytelling.

Ok, a) so need to be rude about it, i know what a fucking character arc is

And b) maybe read the entire post first before pointing out something i explicitely mentioned already? I'm sure it's for character development, i just personally find it a smidge confusing to do so when everyone's (including mario's personality) had already been pretty accurate otherwise (not to mention it being a kid's movie and none of these toddlers are gonna want, expect, or care to see these characters "become" their current selves, let's be real)

You're allowed to disagree with me, in fact i encourage it because i did admit this is me being nitpicky and a negative nancy

But doing so in a rude and condescending way is what i find unacceptable.
