Butoh: Body on the Edge of Crisis

Butoh, a unique theater of improvisation, places the personal experiences of the dancer on center-stage. A Dionysian dance of nudity, eroticism, and sexuality, Butoh’s scale of expression ranges from meditative tenderness to excessive grotesqueness. Through a recalling of the Buddhist death dances of rural Japan, and use of music and masks Butoh is able to incorporate aspects of traditional theater into its extreme performances. An alliance of tradition and rebellion, Butoh is one of the most fascinating underground dance movements. Butoh: Body on the Edge of Crisis is a visually striking film portrait shot on location in Japan with the participation of the major Butoh choreographers and their companies.

The Bridesmaid, oil on panel (1851) Pre-Raphaelite John Everett Millais (1829–1896) portrayed a young woman performing a ritual to foresee her future husband. Tradition claimed that passing a bit of wedding cake through a ring nine times would induce visions of true love.

The painting features flowing hair and orange blossoms symbolizing purity. A phallic silver sugar caster appears to summon male energy. Portrait of a Woman, said to be of Simonetta Vespucci, tempera on panel (ca. 1480) Piero di Cosimo (Italian, 1462–1522) presents a striking profile often identified as Simonetta Vespucci, the legendary muse of Botticelli. Simonetta features an elaborate, pearl-entwined hairstyle. A small snake curls around her gold necklace, a connection to the death of Cleopatra or an allegory of wisdom.

Dark clouds and a dead tree in the background serve as quiet reminders of a life already concluded at the young age of 23. The inscription "SIMONETTA IANVENSIS VESPVCCIA" translates to "Simonetta Vespucci of Genoa". It appears at the base in a style mimicking letters carved into wood or stone, a trompe l'oeil technique famously perfected by Northern masters, such as Jan van Eyck. Loc.
