okay, so i think jeremiah came from a good family. not Perfect by any means, and nothing quite as idealistic as mike’s early years, but his parents love him, they’re stable people. jeremiah’s always been real close with his dad, and though he lives away from his parents now — maybe a state or two apart — he keeps in contact, calls them at least once a week, gets packages from them.
it’s one of many big gaping differences between him and michael, something that takes a lot of understanding from jeremiah, because michael’s past and family (and by extension vanessa’s) is kind of. beyond his understanding. he struggles to imagine what it was like, grasp the weight of it, understand all of the ways it affects michael. and this Can manifest in impatience, in occasional irritability when michael struggles with something that’s second nature to jeremiah, that he can’t imagine anyone having a problem with — like when michael totally fucks up a social interaction, or isolates himself, or can’t do seemingly simple things that he wasn’t taught during childhood neglect. and similarly, michael can find himself getting Grated by jeremiah’s positive relationship with his parents and good habits and Friends — it’s triggering, though there’s no way in hell michael can recognise that.
but jeremiah is very good at communication. he says what’s on his mind, addresses problems as they come, and that is Perfect for michael. it’s exactly what he needs, after being raised and sheltered by Manipulation Georg. he always appreciates it when jeremiah comes to him straight-up with an issue, even when he’s been hardwired to Panic when someone raises an issue with him. he quickly learns to trust beyond anything that jeremiah won’t hurt him. and though michael is Terrible at communication, he is trying his best. he’s learning. and he really appreciates that jeremiah will always communicate and apologise when it was him that fucked up, it gives michael much better groundwork for facing accountability for his own mistakes.
they play video games together a lot. jeremiah’s a huge nerd, and michael is well-versed in older games from the arcades at freddy’s and eager to learn new ones. most of all though, he just likes to watch jeremiah play. he’ll curl at his side and watch jeremiah play zelda and sonic for hours. he gets jeremiah into horror games — resident evil and silent hill and devil may cry, and Loves to watch him play those, sprawled on the couch and bursting into laughter when jeremiah curses at a jumpscare. and he mods jeremiah’s consoles for him, he finds it super fun, and it’s pretty simple to him. jeremiah thinks it’s the coolest thing ever, watching in fascination as michael works magic with a screwdriver.
they also totally go on arcade dates. get sodas or milkshakes and go up against each other in everything. michael is way too good at crane games and wins stupid little plush toys for jeremiah, which jeremiah keeps forever. he has a little army of them in his bedroom, piled up on his dresser or something. they take pictures in the photobooth together. and michael looooves taking photos of jeremiah on his film camera, jeremiah’s a fantastic model for candid shots, and an even better model for shots of him doubled over laughing, or grinning at the camera just because michael’s behind it.
jeremiah’s always making sure michael eats. they share books back and forth and talk about them, bicker their disagreements about plots and characters. they’re very casually affectionate at home — michael is so touch starved and jeremiah loves being tactile, likes to sling an arm around michael or hold his waist or haul michael to lay on top of him like a weighted blanket. they cook together, and then do the dishes together. they each get different flavour milkshakes or ice cream and then share.
jeremiah’s super gentle when michael has nightmares or flashbacks. he’ll go through and check the whole house when michael asks him, even though he Knows there’s nothing there and all of the doors and windows are locked. and then he’ll hold michael through the night, even when neither of them sleep. rubbing his back. sometimes talking to him. the two of them just chattering quietly about anything and everything until the sun comes up. and jeremiah might be Miserable at work the next day, but it’s worth it.
