On Justice Smith As Harris Drover
From the moment I saw his name floated around as a rumour, I already knew what people were going to sayā¦ and Iām gonna be honest, I thought the same thing: ābut isnāt Harris supposed to be chubby?āĀ
And already, we are seeing that discourse online. And I have to say, as someone who has struggled with their weight, I completely understand the desire to see that type of representation onscreen. So Iāve had those conversations over DMs and expressed my own hope to see a chubbier Harris. Now I do think Harris being chubby is an important note for the character because a chubby man dating an incredibly fit hockey player creates tension and an obstacle to overcome before they can be together. Harris is going to have to deal with his feelings of self worth and being othered; heās going to deal with all the emotions that come up when he compares himself to Troy and the men he thinks Troy should be with. So can an actor on the slimmer side accurately portray those emotions?
With Justice Smith, yes he can. Because Justice Smith is a BLACK MAN and he has experienced those emotions, he has asked those questions, he has lived that experience. A chubby white man can lose weight, but a black man canāt change the colour of his skin. So itās actually an experience that Justice will, unfortunately, continue to have.
We know that Jacob isnāt afraid to cast against type (and we all love Ksenia as Svetlana, donāt we?) so itās not surprising. And it shows that Jacobās priority is the story. So I do believe Harris is in good hands and Iām excited to see his story unfold.Ā
