Have you ever heard of a Peppadew®? Sounds like it could maybe be a bird. Or even a flower. It’s actually a fruit with a very intriguing story. They were discovered in the Eastern Cape in South Africa about 4 hours from Johannesburg on an unusual-looking bush which stood head high. The property was surrounded by an avocado farm and tea plantation. The tiny little guys looked like a mix of a mini red pepper and cherry tomato. The flavor is a combination of peppery and sweet, very distinct. The name PEPPADEW® was created due to this unique taste blend of PEPPer and sweet “as the DEW.” I’m guessing the “A” is for “and.” :)
A secret recipe was developed to process the fruit - removing the seeds and reducing the heat then pickling and bottling. Now, the Peppadew® can be found around the world in 27 countries from South Africa to Europe, Australia and here at home where they are grown in Monmouth County. This Jersey farm is the only farm in the U.S. licensed to grow the African fruit which harvests both the original red variety as well as the new Peppadew® GOLD.
When visiting the gorgeous Peppadew® Fresh Farm during our recent #JerseyFreshLove tour, the Jersey Fresh team was lucky enough to taste some really incredible recipes prepared for us by the culinary training class from the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties with support from the American Culinary Federation, Jersey Shore Chefs Association.
They managed to transform the Peppadew® Gold into several remarkable dishes. A New Jersey Blueberry & Peppadew® Pound Cake with Orange Butter. Yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds and looks!
Next up, a New Jersey Vegetable Hash (that included Jersey Fresh zucchini) with Poached Egg and Peppadew® Reduction Hollandaise. I could eat this every single day! But there was one simple and beautiful appetizer that was so good – I can’t stop thinking about it. The combination of a pickled gold peppadew® stuffed with goat cheese with a craisin on top was a little pop of flavor in your month – sweet and creamy yet tart.
I didn’t ask for the recipe. I mean, I imagine that would have made the chefs-in-training giggle because it seems pretty simple. Stuff Gold Peppadews® with goat cheese and press a few craisins into the cheese then stick a pretty toothpick through each layer for easy eating. That’s it!
So, again, all you need is:
1 jar Golden Peppadews® , drained (look for them on the shelf in your local grocery store. I’ve spotted them at Wegmans and ShopRite)
After tasting a bit of each dish, we had to be on our way. But, the chefs sent us off with a treat to remember them by. Obviously, it worked. Those colorful, little apps on a paper plate covered in foil. I immediately put in my cooler for safe keeping. The day was extremely busy after that. So, it wasn’t until I was on my way home about 7 hours later that I remembered the tasty treats were still there, waiting. Lucky for me! I managed to eat them all, every single one, one toothpick at a time, as I drove home on the Jersey Turnpike. They were addicting. The perfect little snack. Made that 2.5 hour commute A-ok.
