To preface this I don’t believe in gatekeeping cr. If you watch it and don’t play dnd, fucking fantastic, I’m not here to tell you to stop.

But I do think it’d be super beneficial for everyone who watches cr to play some dnd at some point in their lives. Because I think there are a lot of quintessential misunderstandings that come from misinterpreting dnd as other forms of storytelling that might be solved by experiencing it yourself.  Ttrpgs and rpgs like dnd are, in the end, about making choices. Not making the right choices, just making choices. I can’t tell you how many times someone in game I’ve played in has made “the wrong choice”, and we loved it. The only thing I think constitutes a “wrong choice” in a game like this is purposely making the other players have a bad time.

Not only that, but dnd is one of the only storytelling mediums that legitimately does not have fate. In books and tv shows no matter what canon says, fate does exist, and the writers are the arbiters of that fate. But in dnd, fate canonically cannot exist. Because it’s a game about you making your own choices. All this to say, analysis of dnd that expects certain things to happen or punishes players for making character choices is stupid. I’ve seen so many people treat the story like it’s one from a book, or worse, like the characters are actual people. The point of dnd game is to have flawed character who make interesting choices.  Don’t like Veth? That’s your prerogative, but don’t get mad at Sam for making the choices that Veth would. Don’t get mad at Matt for a story going a certain way you don’t like because, he doesn’t have complete control of where the story goes. Don’t conflate the cast making new choices as them retconning something. Don’t assume something was a some deep seated plot or plan to have something happen in the story. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it’s just how the dice rolled.

In the end, dnd is about having fun with your friends and telling a story. Marketing it like CR has opens it up to become more about The Story™️ than what you and your friends want to do. (When I say that, duh the story in dnd is important. But it’s about the story you and your friends have fun making, not about The Story™️ the way a book series is.)

It was their choice to market it this way, of course, so they take some of the responsibility, but it’s still our job to acknowledge that this is a dnd game about having fun playing, not making some huge grand narrative that appeals to your every whim. 

Also everyone should get to play dnd cause it’s fucking fun.

Every Critical Role fan should really watch Marisha’s Between the sheets but here is the part where she talks about the toxicity of social media and what your negative comments do. Whatever ship you like you have no right to ruin someone’s enjoyment because they like another ship. Also this is their game and their characters they have every right to do what the fuck they want to do with them we are here for the ride. If you don’t like that then we don’t need that toxicity.

So I feel like I should make my feelings clear.

It’s been pretty clear for awhile that the wind has been blowing away from Beaujes and towards Beauyasha. And part of me is going to be disappointed by that. I really liked the dynamic of Beaujes, enough that it got me to write longform fic for the first time in years. (Shameless self-plug, go check me out on AO3 at thevalleyarchive for a weekly updating longform slowburn Beaujes AU; there’s a link in my bio).

But I think the story they have chosen to tell instead is a worthwhile one too. The experience of crushing on someone you don’t think would be into you, of redirecting your affections away from someone you’re really into onto someone that feels both safer and less attainable - that’s something that rings very true. And with Ashley back for good, and with the way she and Marisha have been playing things recently, I really think Beau and Yasha have developed a strong, interesting chemistry that has the potential to form a relationship unlike any I’ve ever seen in media before.

So Beaujes will continue to be a fondly-held what-if, one that I continue to write about to my heart’s content, but I’m closing the door on hopes of canon validation. I’m done looking for crumbs, for hints of its revival, and I’m ready to get excited for a very different but just as unique and complicated and interesting wlw relationship. I’m ready to get really, properly excited about Beauyasha. I think it’s going to be something special.

If you are someone who likes to watch a lot of cop shows, I want you to ask yourself a few questions.

Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate Internal Affairs? Isn’t the job of Internal Affairs to root out the “bad cops”? Isn’t their job to make sure police follow the rules? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic? 

Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate defense attorneys? Isn’t the defense attorney’s job to protect the rights of all citizens? Isn’t it their job to make sure police follow the law? Isn’t it their job to make sure everyone is treated fairly under the system? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic? 

Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, get upset when citizens invoke their constitutional rights? Don’t those rights exist to ensure all citizens are treated fairly? Don’t they exist to ensure innocent people are not wrongfully incriminated? Why are citizens who invoke their rights presented as dishonest, untrustworthy, or antagonistic? 

To be clear, I’ve watched Brooklyn 99 and enjoyed it. I was watching Elementary the other day. But even when I watch shows I like, I make a mental note every time a cop lies, breaks the law, subverts someone’s basic rights, or just generally acts like an asshole to the people the are meant to serve and protect. 

How often are they called out on their behavior? How often are they punished for it? How often is it reinforced as correct by the narrative?

When I tell people to be critical of the media they consume that is what I mean. Not simply calling it terrible and moving on, but actually engaging thoughtfully, asking questions, and forming conclusions about what that media is trying to say to you. Then decide whether you want to keep listening, or if it will be better for you in the long run to move on.
