The saddest part of a broken heart
Isn't the ending so much as the start
The tragedy starts from the very first spark
Losing your mind for the sake of your heart
Leila Cooper and Samuel Sterns -> Morning After Dark
“Just stop running, stop hiding. Look me in the eyes and just tell me how you feel. Because I need you, and I hate it, but that’s how I feel. I need you more than I have ever wanted to admit. It doesn’t have to be this fucked up. We don’t have to be this fucked up.”
Leila and Sam have been back and forth since Daniel's death. Leila has always been reluctant to admit her feelings, but the moment Sam finally forces her to realize how she really feels is ruined by an abruptive Jetta Osterman who has a few words of her own about the couple.
Samuel In his hand, Sam had a joint slid between his fingers, not even pretending to feign interest in what the people around him were discussing. He did, however, pay attention to a familiar voice. Before him stood Leila Cooper and Sam felt himself interally groan as she sat beside him, resenting how his feelings for her crept up on him. "Nope, as you can see, I am here with all my friends," he cockily remarked, gesturing to all the people who were not acknowledging his presence. "I needed this kind of atmosphere at the moment." He looked into her eyes before licking his lip and taking another drag from his joint. "You here alone?"
Leila Nodding her head slowly, Leila drew in a deep breath inhaling the faint whiffs from his joint. Looking down on her nails, Leila rubbed her hands against her bare knees. It was something she did when she was avoiding a certain topic of conversation. "Of course I'm alone." She leaned in towards him as if to whisper a secret. "I'm a one man wolf pack." She giggled, pushing back a stray lock of her hair behind her ear. She looked over at Sam, puckering her lips in an attempt to get a puff of his joint.
Samuel Scrunching up his face, Sam supressed what looked like a forced laugh. He wanted to be mad at her, as if it would help anything, yet somehow whenever he looked at her, he managed to fall right back under her spell. Earnestly grinning in her direction, his hand moved toward her and he pushed the joint between her lips. "You and me both." He kinked his brow, watching her draw from the joint. Adjusting his shoulders, Sam slid over toward her, ignoring the loud cheers coming from the hall. "I'm glad you're here, if that means anything." It was a rare moment of sincerity for the curly haired boy.
Leila felt the warm air fill her lungs. Her eyes closed as she drifted into a meditation like state. She stayed there for a few moments until she exhaled and came back to reality. "What?" She asked, trying to hear over the party. "Oh! I'm glad you're here too, Sam." She said as anyone should to something as kind as what he had said. The weed was taking its effects, letting Leila's lips feel more free to express what she wanted to. "Really though, you're always the best part of my days." Her head rested on his shoulders, feeling too heavy to hold up.
Samuel shut is eyes in response to her statement. It was hard, having her be so close to him but the ever presence of an emotional disconnection, never being able to truly reveal what was beneath the surface. "Ha, your life must suck then. I'm a fucking asshole." He scoffed, smirking in her direction as he took the joint from her. With his free hand, Sam stroked her hair, running his fingers through. "Do you want to drop any pills and have something to drink or chill or anything?"
Leila squinted her eyes, confused by what he was saying. "Shut up, mother fucker. You are an asshole, but not to me. You're--amazing with me." Sam said obnoxious things and could be a huge dick, but he was surprising perfect when he was around Leila. Now that she thought about it, Sam has always been this way. Even when Daniel was alive. "Pills sound nice. But pills plus this group of people equals me bugging out." She admitted while nuzzling her head slightly against his chest. "So your choice. Pills and some secluded room, or more weed and dancing!"
Samuel took hold of Leila's hand, pulling her up and leading her through the crowd of people with ease, as Sam had no issue with abruptly pushing past people. Eventually he led them to what appeared to be an empty room, with the exception of a sophomore passed out on the ground. "This'll do." Sam sat down on the bed and withdrew a small plastic bag from his back pocket, filled with tiny pills. Slipping his fingers in, he grabbed out two and placed them in Leila's hand before taking two out for himself. "Let's hope this night is one to remember." Exchanging a grin, Sam threw the pills to the back of his throat and washed them down with alcohol.
Leila held tight onto Sam's hand. The rooms were packed and one slip would lead to losing Sam for possibly the rest of the night. As they entered the room, Leila fell down into the bed, swallowing the two pills. She pat the bed next to her and sighed. "It's weird about Noelle, huh?" Leila thought about how thrilled Noelle's family and friends must have been to thought they lost someone only to be reunited. "Fucking Devil Town."
Samuel drank more alcohol, soaking in the far more quiet atmosphere. "I know, so many people have died lately..." Sam curved his lips inward, feeling uncomfortable at the mention of someone being dead. He had no idea Noelle was alive. "This town is... something else entirely." Sam let his mind wander, falling back onto the bed next to Leila.
Leila felt the need to turn her head towards Sam, but she could feel the tension that would follow. She laid flat on her back, same as Sam, waiting for either of them to say anything. She licked her lips, deciding to stop fucking around as her fingers grazed his gently lacing them.
Samuel quirked his eyebrows as he felt her fingers move between his. His breath quickened, turning his head to look at her. His eyes flickered back and forth between focusing on her eyes and her tongue grazing against her bottom lip. He said nothing, waiting for whatever might come next.
Leila couldn't deny how attractive Sam really was. Why she never noticed it, she didn't understand. Without a second thought, she bolted up and straddled on top of him. Throwing back her head to push back her hair, Leila smiled, holding herself up by placing her hands on his chest. Their eyes stayed on each other for a few moments before she went down, glueing her lips to his.
Samuel widened his eyes as he felt her hands press against his chest. The pills were kicking in, which made this moment feel like a dream. Sam placed his hands on her hips, watching her hair move back before their lips collided. Shutting his eyes, Sam slipped his tongue between her lips, gently massaging them, trying to suppress involuntary moans from escaping from his mouth. He thrust his lower body against hers, wanting her to feel his growing erection through the fabric of his pants, while sliding his hands up her back,.
Leila pulled back for a moment to pull off her top. If there was one thing Leila was proud of, it was her tits. There weren't huge, but the suited her. Leila began to slowly grind her lower half in circular motions against his body, she could feel him which was enough to cause her to become wet. She leaned back down to him, teasing him by hooving only inches away from his lips. "Sam," She moaned, pecking his lips once before moving from his cheek to his ear. "I want you inside of me." She nibbled at his ear lobe and continued to peck her lips around his face. It seemed more intimate that way and for one reason or another, she felt the need to be intimate with Sam this time.
Samuel moved his hands up to grope her breasts, tugging on his lower lip. His thumbs rubbed over her nipples, feeling them harden. Hot breath moved out of his lips, feeling like he was about to explode. One hand moved away from her breast and down her bare stomach, moving onto her crotch. He rubbed his hand against her, placing pressure near her clit. He kissed her back, distracted by the fact she said she wanted him inside her. After it dawned on him she'd said his name, Sam felt taken back. She'd never down that before - never acknowledged it was him she was grinding against. He moved his mouth away from her, and sat up, with her still remaining on his lap. "Just stop," he said breathlessly, "what the fuck is /this/?"
Leila breathlessly pulled back from Sam. She cocked her head to the side and shrugged her shoulders. "What do you mean what is this? We are hooking up!" She said obviously, leaning back down to bring their lips together.
Samuel pushed her back, which was incredibly hard to do when he had a boner that needed attending to. "What does this mean? Does it even mean anything to you?" There was a built up frustration evident in Sam's voice, desperate for answers.
Leila shook her head. This had never happened to her during sex. "Of course it means something. It's sex?" She was confused by his wording.
Samuel "It's not /just/ sex, Leila. At least not to me." Sam sat up from the bed, moving his back against the wall. He tried to steer his eyes away from her.
Leila sighed and looked down. "I don't know what you mean." Leila said cluelessly. She understood but she wanted to change the subject.
Samuel "I feel something for you, Leila," Sam shouted at her in frustration, shaking his head. He turned to face her. "You know that, and you act like you don't because it's easier. But I can't do this anymore, I can't play these games."
Leila got up getting closer to him. "Fuck you, Sam. This isn't easy for me." She turned away, pacing away from him. "What the fuck do you think this is doing to me?"
Samuel walked after Leila, running his hand through his hair. "I don't fucking know what this is doing to you because you continually refuse to tell me and ignore what's going on between us." He reached out and gently tried to pull her around to face him. "Just stop running, stop hiding. Look me in the eyes and just tell me how you feel. Because I need you, and I hate it, but that's how I feel. I need you more than I have ever wanted to admit." He moved his hand down, reaching to hold her hand. "It doesn't have to be this fucked up. We don't have to be this fucked up."
Leila 's foot tapped against the ground. She had never admitted to a living soul before that she needed them. Not even Daniel. When it came down to it though, she did need Sam. And not in a friendly way. She turned to face him. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy. "You need me? Why?" She asked, hating herself. Hating how she had been treating him to this point and who she had become. "I'm not the cute, innocent girl I used to be Sam. I'm a disgusting, horrible friend and person." It sounded like an excuse, but in reality this is how Leila now felt about herself. "I'm worthless now. I'm a shell of a person and I would only drag you down, why can't you see that? Why can't you see that I'm not the girl you want me to be."
Samuel "I don't fucking know why," Sam said, his mind scattered with different thoughts. "Maybe because somewhere along the way I fell in love with you - which by the way, was never meant to happen." He continued holding onto her hand, feeling like he wasn't able to let go of her. "I'm not giving up on you just because you're going through something. We're all going through something." Inhaling a sharp breath of air, Sam looked deep into Leila's eyes, seeing past the front she put up. "You don't understand. I don't want you to be anything you aren't. You wouldn't be you and that would honestly suck. Sure, your make-up got a little darker and your clothes got a little more revealing, but you're still you, in some different form."
Leila It was the first time since Daniel's death that Leila had felt right. Like she didn't need to be someone else. She felt accepted and she didn't need to be something that she no longer was. Her breathing quickened as her brows furrowed. She didn't need to be afraid. Sam was here for her and he wasn't going anywhere. Maybe it was because she knew that his feelings had been around long before she changed, or maybe it was because he couldnt die, but she knew what she had to do. She took a few steps forward and held on to the collar of his shirts while she looked down. Drawing in all her courage, she pressed her lips to Sam's like she never had before. Normally, it was with force while now it was with something much deeper. She pulled back, keeping her forehead against his and looking into his eyes. "You mean more to me than what I've put you through, then how I've been treating you. I just didnt know how to handle it."
Samuel waited for her reaction, expecting her to run or push him backward and potentially kill him. What she did took him by surprise. His eyes softened as her words put him at ease, speaking things he'd never thought that he would hear. For the first time in a long time, Sam was speechless. Her kiss left him out of breath. He moved his hand up to her cheek, cupping it as a small smile appeared on his face. "We can handle it together... you know, maybe not as functional human beings, but we can if we have each other. Maybe." He looked back into her eyes, feeling an unfamiliar closeness. It was her letting him in, more than she ever had before.
Leila still felt vulnerable, but knew she didn't need to so long as Sam was here. He had a way of seeing Leila without judging her. She put down her forehead on his chest and drew in a deep breath. It took her a few moments to respond merely because she was in shock that she was allowing this to happen. "I can't get close to someone again, not with the potential of losing them. Bad shit always happens to people I care about, Sam."
Samuel "Nothing is going to happen to me," Sam said as he craddled her head against his chest, taking in deep breaths. "Seriously, I'm immortal." Sam lifted her head up, gently pulling her face into his and gently kissing her. Their lips touching felt existential. Sam's kiss grew more aggressive, consuming her lips and allowing passion to flow between the two of them.
Jetta was in the middle of searching for Ella Hart for reasons. "HellO?" She questioned, wandering down the hall that was virtually empty. She turned into a room and saw Sam kissing someone who resembled a panda. A gasp escaped her lips as she saw it was Leila. "What the fuck is this?" Jetta rudely abruptly.
Leila pulled away from Sam instantly. The immediate reaction she felt was that she had cheated on Jetta, but that quickly changed. She wiped away at her lips and laughed slightly. "Hey, Jetta." She said clueless to the fact that Jetta was upset.
Jetta glared back and forth between Sam and Leila, who looked high as fuck. "Answer the question, Leila. What the /fuck/ is going on here?" She took note of the smudged make-up, which wasn't unusual for Leila but she rarely saw Sam with a smattering of eyeliner over his skin. "Or did I just fucking imagine you making out with Daniel's best friend?"
Leila Hearing Daniel's name spill from Jetta's lips was enough to send Leila into a spiral. Since being back the two girls had yet to speak about him. "I--well, yeah we were but it's not like that Jetta. We actually--" Explaining her feeling to Jetta didn't seem fair. "He's not just D-Daniel's best friend."
Jetta took a deep breath. The calm before the storm. She glanced at Sam. "Can you please leave so I can speak to Leila in private?" She waited for him to exit to proceed. "Please, explain to me what it is like." She took a step forward, tilting her head to the side. "Because right now, it seems blatantly fucking obvious that you're fucking Samuel Sterns."
Leila broke down the instant Sam left the room for the sheer fact that Jetta had never spoke to her like this before. "I--yeah. I am but it's not just fucking. We--" She shrugged, "There's more to it than that." The hurt was intensified when she looked into Jetta's eyes, the same eyes as Daniel. "What am I supposed to do Jetta?"
Jetta "Oh my god," Jetta said, unable to look at Leila. "Un-fucking-believable." She brought her hand to her forehead before turning to face Leila. "You're supposed to not fuck your dead boyfriend's best friend - that's what you're /supposed/ to do." She stared directly into Leila's eyes, searching for any sort of answer but evidently ignoring the hypocrisy in what she was spewing out. "How long did you wait until you jumped into bed with Sam? Two months -- a week?"
Leila allowed herself to cry over Daniel for the first time in front of Jetta. She couldn't tell Jetta the truth but she had never lied to her. "Daniel was gone, Jetta. I didn't know what to do. I couldn't handle it. I--he's the love of my life. That is never going to change. But he wouldn't want me to waste away without him." Her voice was breaking and she was clearing trying to convince herself of what she was saying.
Jetta "So, you're using Sam? God, you're pathetic." Jetta spat her words out of anger. "Daniel loved you with his entire heart and he dies and you hook up with Sam. What the fuck is wrong with you?" Her shouting stopped and she looked at Leila with utter disappointment.
Leila Jetta was literally saying everything she had ever feared would become true. "I'm not using him, no. That's not it." She fell down on to the bed, crying into her hands. "Daniel's gone." She yelled. "And don't for one fucking second act like I didn't love him more than my own fucking worthless life! You of all people know that!"
Jetta "I thought I knew that, but now? Now I have no idea. Do you even care about anything anymore? Did you even bother thinking how this would make me feel?" Self centered Jetta alter. "You know what, just fucking forget it. DON'T speak to me ever again." She turned around to leave. She couldn't believe what Leila had done, and that she was trying to justify it. ~Fucking slut~ she thought to herself as she headed toward the door.
Leila rushed forward, stunned by her reactions. "My boyfriend dies, Daniel dies, and I try to be happy with one of the few people Daniel would have wanted to be happy, and you're angry?! You're such a fucking hypocrite!" She yelled as the slut comment popped into Jetta's head. She scoffed, more upset that their friendship was going this way. "Fine, I'm a slut. But at least I didn't rip too brothers apart because of my fucking slutty behaviors!" She yelled at Jetta through tears.
Jetta stops in her tracks. She quickly turned around, pushing past Leila. She ripped the lamp plug out of the wall and then turned around to throw it at Leila. She's clumsy so it missed and smashed on the floor. "Fucking cunt." She shoved past Leila and angst. Left.
I know, right? She actually sat me down once and explained to me that it was okay to have these feelings but not to do anything that would potentially hurt Dan. It was an awkward conversation to say the least, especially because I was about to ask if I could have Sebastian come over from dinner so he could meet her and my dad.
Got to love your mom. At least she's okay with our relationship! That's good to know! And let's be real, Dan and Sam were all over each other twenty four seven anyway! They always had to compete with our cuteness.
Please, Jetta. When have I ever been in the same room as you and not shared the bed? Don't you remember how mad Dan used to get at us? I swear there was a time there when your mum thought we were together.
That must have been just as hard as it was awkward. Want me to come over with a box of tim tams and some John Cusack movie?
And while I'm at it, I could bring a few more things over. I mean, technically your room is half empty now. It would be a shame for that bed to go to waste. Too soon?
