His willingness to adapt to Penelope’s life. It’s usually the woman who must adapt to the man in romance, and it’s very frustrating. But this dynamic is reversed here. For example, he was willing to give up the throne so she could continue pursuing archaeology.

How did you meet Callisto Regulus? / What was your first impression of him?🌹

I met him simply by reading the manhwa. When I first saw him, I thought he was most likely the ML of this series. I guess I had this hunch mostly because many rofan manhwas’ MLs are princes and are crazy like him. 😅

As far as we know, the Mirror of Truth & the powers of the Laila do not "brainwash" people, they influence them. There is a difference. Brainwashing implies they are being controlled entirely, without regard for their own preferences and interests. However, we know from the methods of avoiding Laila's influence that this power is not that strong.

How does one prevent themselves from succumbing to this power? By having an opposing interest. By not being in agreement with goals or reality presented by the influence.

Exhibit A) The duke in the previous timelines is never confirmed to have killed Penelope, and considering that he is not a love interest despite being a character with so much power over her life and emotions, it seems pretty clear that this is just not a role he had. This makes sense because we already know that, despite his neglect and harshness, he is the one person who loved Penelope through every single timeline. He can be influenced to give Ivonne a crystal mine close to Penelope's birthday because he has guilt and love for Ivonne that can be manipulated. That does not mean his love for Penelope can magically be erased, as evidenced by his current timeline self snapping out of Laila's influence due to his affection for Penelope & his concern over her health. In his case, the magnitude of his affection for Penelope is enough to override his actions because it's not congruent for this current version of his self (who is learning to express his love to his daughter who recently demonstrated how severely she needs those expressions) to just sit there and be detached in interacting with her.

Exhibit B) Reynold initially falls for the influence in the current timeline because he already sees Penelope as callous and brash. He can already envision Penelope bullying Ivonne/someone who potentially could be Ivonne. He's susceptible to the power because it agrees with his current understanding of reality. It takes being confronted with proof to the contrary of his beliefs (Penelope's reminder that he is the reason she is disrespected, and the confirmation that his assumption of her hurting Ivonne was wrong) for him to lose faith in what's being projected into his mind. It's the disagreement between the truth and what was planted in his mind which causes him to become too aware of the faults in his judgment to continue falling for Laila's influence attempting to pain Penelope as the aggressor. This is similar to Winter's case as well, except that his features more of a struggle since he didn't hold that low of a view of Penelope to begin with, but also has a closer connection to this particular Ivonne, so his two realities are clearly incongruent but he has to figure out which is right.

Exhibit C) Callisto is never influenced in the current timeline because he loves Penelope, unlike in the other timelines. In those other timelines, marrying Ivonne is something that would lead him to his primary goal: the throne. It might even be that marriage is a means he would have originally been unenthusiastic to choose when aiming for the throne (trauma and all), but because his own personal interest of wanting the throne aligns with what he would gain from acquiescing to the specific thoughts Ivonne is planting in his mind (love for her), the power works. He can only be influenced to love her because what that love leads to is in agreement with his own goals. This falls apart in the current timeline not because he wants the goal any less or because Ivonne would be any less useful in achieving that goal, but because Penelope is more important and loving/marrying Ivonne would be incongruent with his priority (that being a life with Penelope).

Exhibit D) Derrick. As we all know, Laila only exploited his guilt towards Ivonne when she was manipulating him. He didn't care enough for Penelope's happiness or Eckhart-independent social standing to be conflicted between that and symbolically bringing Ivonne home (introducing her to society at their family event). It's not until Penelope's life, which he does care about because she is part of his inheritance (as, in his mind, a permanent dependent of House Eckhart), is in danger that he feels conflict.

Exhibit E) Eckles. Unlike the rest, this one is highly contested because how do we separate Laila from Eckles, who we barely get to know despite how much he appears in the story? Personally, I follow what's established above and apply to it to him: Eckles is convinced by the Laila to trade the lives of his people (enslaved Delmans) in order to destabilize Penelope's position further so she would be reliant on him. This suggests that Eckles a) doesn't care about the lives of his people enough for that to cause any conflict within him, and b) essentially forcing Penelope to depend on him is not incongruent with what he wants from Penelope. We see this again in the multiple instances where he threatens to force himself on her. Laila was doing everything in her power to try to win him back from Penelope up until after Penelope's coming of age, which means that his original desire to possess Penelope was separate from Laila's influence. Arguments can be made for his willingness to SA her later on, as the influence may be instigating his desire to be in control after being deprived of it, but it does stem from thoughts he already holds. It has to be taken into account that Eckles has a more fragile mental state than any other character due to going from a sheltered and well loved prince to a slave with no autonomy or personhood, and then Penelope's manipulations. But it doesn't mean we can't acknowledge that to pin the blame on "brainwashing" is an oversimplification of what is the result of several factors interacting.

All this to say that while the Laila can influence what an individual thinks, feels and how they behave, all that manipulation can only work within certain boundaries of what is in agreement with the individual's preexisting beliefs and desires.

NOW. How do they get to the point of Winter standing in a corner crying but unable to break out of her spell? The influence went on too long and actually gained the strength of brainwashing. Or that's my guess, since Tapas translates it as being a gradual thing...who knows. Point is, that doesn't happen until far along the line, and it shows a strength against breaking free that would violate what our characters were able to in the current timeline's point of time.

Lei pointed out that the better the Laila knows the person, the better the "brainwashing" works (eg. her failing to use Eckles' hatred for Penelope to manipulate him succeeding once she realized he was in love/obsessed, failing to use og!Penelope's fear of losing her family against Siyeon but succeeding when she realized that Siyeon is afraid of her own death). That supports what I outlined above because the better the Laila knows someone & their goals -> the better she is able to manipulate those goals to offer something she knows the person can't resist wanting/believing. It makes her manipulation very personal in nature actually.

That probably explains why Winter was able to break free eventually (his students were probably dead at that point, likely many or all of the regular mages as well). He would have nothing left that she could use for her hold on him.
