“If you dare open those curtains I will burn you alive.” Gracelyn warned, still not fully recovered from her last spell.
“Still feeling that bad?”
“It’d be a little weird, but I feel it’s appropriate for the moment.” Despite the utter lack of success, Kai was rather pleased that he was able to bring these to together – if only to bring them both that security that came with being honest, to both themselves and to each other. And, Leland really did seem like a great guy. As any good uncle, the heretic would keep up his tough love, but he wasn’t worried anymore. His arms extended. “Bring it in, nephew.”
Leland felt momentarily discouraged then entirely shocked when Kai uttered the word nephew. There were certain members of his own family that didn’t want to admit they had any relation because of his father. He didn’t take it personally but it meant a lot to Leland to know that he had gained approval from the other man. “Thank you.” He said again as he stepped forward to embrace the other male in a warm hug.
“You don’t –– you don’t have to worry, I’m fine. Really. It’s just work.” Bea said biting her trembling lip. “I couldn’t save someone.”
“You tried, Bea. You try everyday and that’s more than a lot of people can say.”
The moment his hands touched her skin, she knew her face must’ve been bright red. He really did like her, it wasn’t just some unrequited crush she’d been hiding but a shared feeling between them. As if to answer his question, Eli slipped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. A second of hesitation was all it took before her lips were on his, a silent answer to his question. In that moment time seemed to stop, and the world fell away leaving only them.
Nothing existed; all he could feel was the tender passion as Eli pressed her lips to his. It was so different from what he had imagined, so much better to finally be able to hold her close like this. It made him wonder why he had been so scared to admit his feelings but none of that mattered anymore. Reluctantly, he broke the kiss when the need for air became too much. “Wow,” he whispered lamely but without care as a bright smile spread across his features.
“I’m not really in the mood for company right now.”
“We don’t have to talk I’m just worried about you.”
Eli mouth fell open in a silent gasp, her cheeks burning a soft shade of pink in response. She swallowed hard, not sure how to respond. As if on instinct, she reached across her torso to pinch herself, flinching slightly at the pain and blushing even more. Okay, so not a dream. Her first instinct was to think it was some sort of joke, but she knew he’d never play with her like that. No, this was real. “But I’m so lame,” she breathed, not meaning to say the words aloud. “I mean…uh…are you sure?”
Leland grew more scared by the second. For a second, he entertained the idea that maybe Kai had lied to him but no, he believed that the man wouldn’t play with people’s hearts like that. His fears were silenced when she finally spoke again and he smiled, shaking his head in amusement. “I’m pretty sure I’m the lame one between the two of us.” He worried his lower lip between his teeth as he stepped forward into her space. He cupped her face in his hands, trying to read the emotions that fluttered across her features. “Will you believe me if I kiss you?” He asked with hesitance seeping into his voice, wondering if he was going too far.
So, his read was correct. He wasn’t surprised in the slightest. “Then you’re going to tell her,” he told him flatly. Nothing irritated him more than two people who couldn’t be honest with each other, especially over something like this. “Collect your thoughts and get to it. And I’ll be waiting, because I doubt I’ll be the last person she will come to once you do.”
“Y-Yeah, of course. I totally will.” Leland stumbled over his words as an excited grin crossed his face. “Dude-- er Kai, thank you so much. Can I hug you or would that be weird?” The younger male liked to show his gratitude through affection and right now he couldn’t be more grateful to have finally been given the last push he needed to confess his feelings but he understood that wasn’t always welcomed.
Once she’d seen his message, it didn’t take long for Eli to reach the small field that she and Leland had declared their spot after a night of stargazing and stories about the constellations. An amused smile tugged at her lips as she caught sight of the floating petals and picnic, a brow raised in confusion. “Hey, Lee…what is all of this?” For a second she wondered if maybe he’d prepared the whole thing for her, but she quickly laid that thought to rest. It was far too romantic a scenario, and as far as she knew he only saw her as a friend.”
A smile immediately came to his face when he saw her. The reason he liked her so much was because she thrilled him and she understood him and he liked to think he understood her too. Just a little. “It’s for you. I um, I--” he sighed, shaking his head. He could feel his face burning as he tried to just get the words out. “I like you, Eli. As more than a friend. I have for awhile.” His heart clenched inside of his chest as he waited for her reaction, nervous and excited.

'Meet me at our place?'
Leland had sent that text half an hour ago, hopefully giving himself enough time to set up. Currently he was standing in a field that held a variety of flowers and he had enchanted the loose petals to circle and fly around in the open air. If she found that cheesy hopefully she wouldn’t give him a hard time once she saw the food he had made and brought. Finally, he was going to admit his feelings because knowing that there was even a chance she felt the same, he couldn’t let that go.
What I have with you I don’t want with anyone else.

“That’s fair.” Eli nudged him back, her own laughter soon mingling with his. “I have no doubt that we’ll be on top. Honestly, most people are going to be using the store bought costumes anyways, and everyone knows homemade ones are best. I may even magic us up some sort of advantage. No clue how, or even what for that matter, but it’s an idea.”
“To be fair those store bought ones have to be generic enough to fit a range of people. I would have to say that the Hulk costumes are always the worst about it, though. I don’t want any surprises in my utility belt if you do figure out how to magic it up. You know, I wonder if it would be possible to recreate Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth, like, one that really works.”
Laurel led them towards the door. “Walk it is then.” She laughed and said, “if anything it would probably be my fault. Hopefully it doesn’t. I don’t mind going outside in the rain but I don’t think it’d be too fun to walk around in drenched clothes.”
Leland followed along and smiled as they were greeted by a relatively warm breeze of the day. “Definitely not. The wet dog look doesn’t look good on anyone and everything just clings in all the wrong places.”
The boy’s reaction irritated him, though a part of him was rather pleased – because the alternative was just too unbelievable. How dare someone not be completely enamored with his precious Eli? It was obvious by the look on Leland’s face that either the feelings were mutual, or he had at least entertained the idea. It had always been an easy thing for the Gemini witch to spot; nothing else in this world held the same obnoxious flare. The whole situation was starting to feel like a backfire. “Does it look like I’m laughing?”
No. There wasn’t even the sign of a chuckle. A spark of hope lit up his eyes as he scrubbed a nervous hand through his hair. “I--No, uh--” He sighed before clearing his throat to keep himself from continuing to stumble over his words. “I like her too. I have for awhile.” There was no sense as to why Leland was admitting this to Kai but he rationalized it as practice for when it really counted. Not knowing, the possibility of rejection; he couldn’t continue to use those as excuses anymore. Now he had to tell her and he definitely wanted to. He was tempted to call her now but he knew he couldn’t be that hasty. She deserved more than that.
“Well, she’s not entirely wrong. All work and no play makes for a very dull Leland. Or something like that.” Eli waved her hand, dismissing her own comment. “I mean, it’s definitely a popular theme this year so I wouldn’t be surprised. But I can guarantee ours will be the most authentic costumes.”
“I get plenty of play every time you drag me somewhere new,” he jested, nudging her teasingly with a short laugh. “Well, they have been pumping out movies like crazy lately. I totally agree. We have to go all out,” he spoke as if that wasn’t already a given for them.
TASK 002 – EVERYTHING IS A TEST
“I’m optimistic.” It wasn’t difficult to befriend Kai. Despite his lack of tact, he was pleasant company. Leland had impressed him so far – or maybe that isn’t the right word to use. “Sure thing,” he replied with a slight smirk. “She wasn’t terribly specific. Main points were that you’re a quote great guy end quote, and that she had a thing for you.”
A light blush had already crept onto his face but it bloomed in full force as all thoughts were swept from his mind and he focused in on only the fact that Eli might have a ‘thing’ for him. “Wait-- uh what? That’s not funny.” Clearly the man had to be joking. Maybe he did have feelings for Eli but he knew they weren’t returned. They were so close that he should have picked up on something by now if they were.
“You are not that skinny. Trust me, I’ve seen you without a shirt on, and you’ve clearly been hitting the gym in your free time. Or just lifting some really heavy stuff.” Eli glanced over at him, feeling herself blush slightly as she pictured him shirtless. Not bad at all. “You can have the sewing. Not my strong suit. Prop fabrication is definitely where my strengths lie.”
“I have but only because I’m tired of being skinny. Plus my mom said I should do something besides study all day.” Leland was oblivious to her reaction, wrapped up in his own defense. “Awesome. These will be the best costumes ever. Maybe we’ll even find some other dc heroes and villains that night.”
