”This mind isn’t for two.” — AU Lore #1
This little story is just about the first time Duo shows himself as wanting to be his own person, I suppose. This is directly following the events from Volume 63 of the IDW Sonic comics.
Duo—Mimic— was currently resting up in the room he was being provided while in Restoration HQ. He frowned as he looked around the room, tired of staying there. He wanted nothing more than to disappear, but he had a job to do. He needed to spy, and that’s exactly what he would do.
Abruptly, Mimic’s hands flew up to grasp at his head when he started feeling a painful twinge to it. Like an annoying voice trying to claw at his mind and get out. And this voice had a familiar feeling to it.
That was really stupid back there. Mimic breathed out in surprise at the voice he heard. It was that of his disguise, Duo. But how was he hearing the disconnected voice now?
“What do you mean?” The shapeshifter had settled on asking, his voice barely even a whisper.
Attacking that psychic boy, Silver. Especially when he had such heavy rocks in his power’s grasp. You could’ve killed the Diamond Cutters. Could’ve killed a person with so much potential.
“That was the point! That psychic was, and still is, too dangerous to have around!” Mimic growled under his breath, not believing he was arguing with Duo, his mask. Arguing with something that shouldn’t be able to say anything of his own!
Disappointed in you, Mimic. I appreciate the Diamond Cutters, and I’m glad that they’re all okay and uninjured. But letting Silver take the blame and get in trouble? I can’t believe we share a bo-
Mimic dug his gloved fingers into the side of his head, forcing Duo to fall silent and get buried back into the very depths of his consciousness. Our Consciousness? No, don’t think like that. Duo is a puppet, a mask. He shouldn’t be able to speak or share opinions! He isn’t real. Can’t be.
And yet, here I am, Mimic. Even buried, Duo was speaking and sharing his own thoughts, and now Mimic had two minds. A war that was inevitable between them…
This mind isn’t meant for two, Duo.
