DANCING WHERE THE DOGS DECAY
This illustration project was a culmination and reflection of my recent 'mild' obsession with all things Bowie.
David Bowie has always been in the peripheral of my memories for almost as far back as I am capable of having memories. This is not to say that I was a fan or grew up on his music, quite the opposite in fact. No, years and years went by; first infancy then childhood, adolescence and finally early adulthood, all without ever really listening to a single Bowie album in full. Yet somehow I was still familiar with all the classics, all the bowie tropes. I had simply digested them from years of radio-play, references in media, and parodies in film and television.
I can't quite recall what was the initial catalyst for me to go though the entire David Bowie catalogue chronologically, but I know it had something in part to do with a Flight of the Conchords episode, as well as a yearning to return to a pre-playlist era when you would appreciate the full journey of a Long Play, rather than just skip forward to the signature tracks.
The rules I set myself were simple; take your time, 'chew' each album carefully, and do not move on to the next 'course' until you've cleaned your plate. Okay, so I've stumbled into this culinary metaphor which I guess works so long as you can accept the idea of a twenty-five course degustation menu, with multiple dessert courses being served sporadically throughout.
