homework was the last thing lennox was able to focus on, leg shaking as she read the same sentence over and over without actually comprehending anything. it’d been almost an hour and she’d made absolutely no progress, which was ridiculous. maybe jina was working and she could attempt to pester her into giving her booze. but probably not. with a sigh, she closed her laptop and asked someone passing by, “would you buy me something from the bar if i paid you back?”
“god i wish i could play stupid and say i don’t know what the fuck a fandom is. that being said, no. i know how to enjoy things without going apeshit over it.”
why do you always carry knives with you? that's really dangerous.
“living is also dangerous but we all do it anyway. i carry knives because it’s fun for me. … and also it’s san francisco and the chance of being the victim of a crime is one in sixteen.”
the look at cruz’s face spoke louder than his actual words , which came out as a disheveled “ wh– excuse me ? ” arms cross over his chest , taking a deep breath before he talks again. “ i’m not like , insulting your music taste , but call me maybe slaps harder than any summer bop has ever slapped and i would say that directly to katy perry’s face. ” there were some times that cruz really , genuinely needed a stupidity filter for himself before he subjected those around him to the people around him. “ fine , then. what do you think slaps ? ”
“katy perry’s music is also shit,” she replied without skipping a beat. “like, seriously, her only half decent song was i kissed a girl and even that was just ... okay.” she shrugged, rocking back on her heels. did she get enjoyment out of ruining people’s day? maybe just a little, but that was still more than any other person would. “out of the artists you’ve probably listened to ... halsey. but like, specifically you should be sad.”
––––– he’s sitting in the cafe at jukebox records , laptop and phone both out with his guitar bag strapped to the back of his chair. sometimes cruz liked being at his apartment , but usually he liked being here around people who loves music as much as he did. however , sitting in silence for too long has the male crawling in his own skin , so of course the nearest passer by has to hear from him. “ hey , on a scale of one to ten , how hard do you think call me maybe by carly rae jepsen still slaps ? i said ten , but the twitter poll i posted just doesn’t agree with me. ”
doing her homework at a the café made lennox feel more productive. it didn’t matter that she was getting distracted every five seconds by someone walking by, or the smell of coffee being poured fresh, or new pastries coming out of the oven. she felt like she was making progress, despite having been staring at her computer screen for a solid twenty minutes, trying to do an essay but getting nowhere. maybe another coffee would help. she got up, headed up to the counter before being stopped. “call me maybe didn’t slap even when it first came out. the song is like, a negative four on the slap scale.”
aahmes gasped, a hand over his chest, dramatic to the core. “i cannot believe what i am hearing. the youths today,” he said, shaking his head, though a hint of a smile on his lips. “what you just said is ridiculous. —who’s your favorite?”
“drama queen,” she muttered, used to his overreactions for the sake of being humorous. “don’t start getting mad at the youths just because our music taste evolved past four white men with mediocre lyrics.” granted, not everyone her age felt the same way but she moved over into p for her record, pulling out a pretty reckless album. “this is my favorite album of all time. i’m getting it tattooed on me. not to mention the lead singer is hot.”
“i stand by my decision. beatles all the way. i love all kinds of music, but the beatles, man… they changed the world…” aahmes said, holding up a vinyl of abbey road with a raise of his brow.
“the beatles are garbage,” lennox replied with a roll of her eyes. “nothing you say will convince me. they just happened to exist in the first decade where women were allowed to be horny.”
( SABRINA CARPENTER / CISFEMALE / 20 / SHE/HER ) i always seem to run into LENNOX HARLOWE at jukebox records. i’ve heard that if the REGULAR CUSTOMER had to choose one go-to record, it’d be GOING TO HELL by THE PRETTY RECKLESS and that they can be INTUITIVE but also kind of RECKLESS. for some reason, they always make me think of ripped fishnet tights and combat boots, neon lights reflecting off wet streets, and cherry red lips curved in a challenging smirk. — ( asbury, 25, est, they/them )

Biography:
February 29, 2000. Lennox Gage was born to Danielle and Ashton Darling. There are thousands of babies born out of love, after years of trying to parents who would put their child first over everything. This wasn’t one of those cases. Lennox had been born to save a marriage, to parents who were too young and ill prepared to handle and infant. Despite it all, it looked like things were going to be okay. Her parents were happy, the grandparents on both sides had forgotten their concern upon holding their granddaughter. A tentative peace had fallen over the household.
Except that it broke within the six months of her life. Neither Danielle and Ashton had realized that a baby took a lot of work. Getting up in the middle of the night to feed her, change her diaper, just be with her. They began snapping at each other more and more, exhausted and fed up. No amount of nights with her grandparents were enough to reset the status quo and things began deteriorating fast.
Her mother left five months after she was born, taking off in the middle of the night. Struggling with undiagnosed postpartum depression, she felt no connection to her baby and left her without a second thought. That only went to ruin her father’s plan to leave, since he wasn’t sure how much more of Lennox’s crying he could take. Angry and trying to redirect any sort of would-be violent tendencies elsewhere, he dropped Lennox off at a firehouse. He was free of his mistake.
He was unaware of the laws that only allowed parents 72 hours to surrender a newborn. He ended up in jail while Lennox was bounced from foster home to foster home. Once her fourth birthday hit, she was adopted into the Harlowes. They’re the only family she remembers. A mom, a dad, an older brother and an older sister and a little brother. She fit in perfectly.
Around age eight she first picked up a paint brush, even if it was used to attack her older sister in green paint, but eventually she managed to get it into a canvas. It started a love affair with art and she spent a lot of time covered in paint growing up. Her parents encouraged it, just wanting her to have an outlet. They always said they would tell her that she was adopted when she was old enough to handle it, but never found the right time.
She grew up relatively normal. Never found much love for her dad’s classic rock or her mom’s Enya, but she was influenced by her sister’s heavy metal. Lennox herself was never quite into the screaming scene but she wanted to emulate her older sister as much as possible so she tried until she found out that not all heavy bands screamed and it devolved from there. She’s close with all her siblings and visits home a lot to spend time with her younger brother and her parents.
Headcanons:
Lennox is unaware that she’s adopted, even though she’s well aware she looks nothing like her siblings.
Her older brother used to take her to Jukebox Records frequently while growing up and she fell in love with the place after one visit. It became their place to go together and whenever he’s in town, they go together because it’s tradition.
She’s much smarter than she lets on and got accepted to several Ivy League colleges only to turn them all down for a degree in art.
Some people try to gatekeep the music scene she’s into and they think that she’s in it just to impress guys, so she tends to come off as defensive because she’s tired of people passing judgment on her.
Art may be her first love but music is her true love. She’s usually singing to herself or playing guitar in her apartment but only if no one else is ever around. She’s too self-conscious to let anyone hear her.
