I wrote this piece for solo contrabassoon last year and recently had it recorded. It’s essentially neo-expressionistic and is probably the most atonal thing I’ve ever written, all for a growling instrument rarely given solo roles in orchestral settings, let alone chamber or solo repertoire.
Part of my interest as a composer is using instruments in unexpected contexts, and an instrumentation consisting of a sole contrabassoon is but one way to effectively do that.
