“Y’think we’ll ever have a conversation without you insulting me?” He asked, looking down towards the beach. “I guess so, just maybe not here. At least half of those people are regular customers, and I do have a reputation.”

Well, the least we can agree on is that neither of our sports require much stealth. That’s just a personal trait-- we’ll have to see who has more of it.

“So then you’ll just work it off tomorrow, no big deal,” she prompted. “Good, because I did not wait in line during this place’s busiest time for you to get health conscious.”

He huffed a laugh and stepped aside for her to come in, then let the door fall shut behind her. “It’s no big deal until I’m hitting the metaphorical workout wall tomorrow,” he said. “I hate training season. I get to live out the rest of my year in peace with an extra fifteen pounds, and then training season rolls around and just fucks everything up.”

She nodded in agreement. “True, but if I went skinny dipping, would you?”   

“Depends. Would you steal my clothes and run away with them like some villain from a 90s teen movie?”

Audrey chuckled as she looked over at him, an amused smile illuminating her face.  “Well, I’ve already gone skinny dipping before but it’s too cold to do it for ten bucks.  I might have done it for fifty.”

He shot a look at the woman, but it quickly melted into a grin. “What? You’re tellin’ me that the lovely, put-together Audrey Rogers has been skinny dipping before?” he asked, feigning shock. "That's very scandalous."

“Yeah…” she agreed halfheartedly, hoping that for their sake this momentary situation wouldn’t drag on longer than it needed too. It’s was only a minute right? Sure Vivienne one minute, came the taunting response from her inner self. She could keep herself in check for that long. For a woman that went before cameras every day to reach into the homes of thousands small talk seemed to be escaping her at the moment. As she meandered through her innermost thoughts, Vivienne was thankful that Leo spoke, because she couldn’t agree more with his sentiment. A genuine smile broke the pensive state she was in. “Very much so. It feels almost like something out of novel or film.” Not bad Vivienne, she silently commended. 

However, with that initial exchange out of the way, she scrambled to find something safe to talk about. Brandon? No. Thinking of her son’s current attitude towards her, Vivienne had considered contacting Leo for insight and assistance, but she had long lost the privilege of doing so. It was in light of her regrets that the brunette couldn’t help what she said next. “I miss you.” Vivienne uttered the words so softly that she herself wasn’t sure if they slipped past her lips. “Oh god, I’m s– I shouldn’t have,” flustered, Vivienne crossed her arms over her middle, and fixed her gaze on the shut elevator doors ahead. She had no right to say those words here and now –or ever– considering how they parted ways. Truth of the matter is that Leo had become such a large part of her life that filling the void he left was near impossible. And as stubborn as she was to admit that she made a mistake, the threat of the returning ridicule and pressure from her family, co-workers and friends served it’s purpose to keep her from going back to Leo.

Every piece of small talk Leo had been preparing seemed to melt away as soon as Vivienne said she missed him. Did he hear that right? Or was sharing such a small space with her just getting to his head? When her stuttered apology came next, though, he realized the words had actually slipped out of her mouth. His first reaction was surprise, followed by the desire to admit that he missed her, too. He really did. In ways that kept him up at night in the early weeks after their breakup, and in subtler ways now-- like how he still had an old T-shirt crumpled up at the bottom of his closet that he purposefully never touched, because it was the one Vivienne had borrowed whenever she stayed the night. He was ignoring it like he ignored most of his problems, assuming one day it’d just magically disappear.

He ran a hand over his hair and tried not to look like a flustered teenager, but there he was, lips parted and eyebrows stitched together in a concerned sort of way. He became aware of the silence again, and of the fact that he wasn’t actually saying anything back to her. “You-- you miss me?” Was all he managed, vision switching from the foggy metal doors back to Vivienne’s eyes. He couldn’t admit that he missed her or thought about her all the time, because --not for the first time in his life-- his pride was getting in the way of the truth. “What’s that even supposed to mean, Viv? And why... why are you telling me now?”

“Hmm?” At the sound of someone speaking beside her, Melanie looked up. She was so out of it, it seemed, that she barely processed what he had said. However, when it clicked, she looked forward and finally responded. “Oh! Uh.. probably for free, honestly. But I’m weird like that and have already jumped into the ocean with no clothes on. Despite it being cold. It’s not as bad you’d think. One your adrenaline kicks in, you’re fine, really.”

Leo narrowed his eyes at Melanie for a brief moment, wondering where her mind had been wandering to. He didn’t press the issue though, and simply took another pull of beer as she spoke. “Mm, I’ve definitely done it before, just more so when I was younger. I guess the closer I get to thirty, the less appealing jumping naked into the ocean sounds,” he joked. “But if someone wants to give me money for it... there’s probably no reason to stop.”

Approaching the Surf Shack, Whitney gazed happily at the setting sun and excited people. Of course, Fort Worth had amazing sunsets, but she never saw a sunset on the beach before. This was her first. Taking her eyes away from the view, she looked at some surfboards before looking at the cute hats. Trying one on, she was about to pose but heard a voice close by. Hearing what the man had to say, a curious smile appeared on her face. “I would go late night skinny dipping for probably fifty bucks, at least. I’m not a big fan of swimming.”

Leo nodded at her answer and swung his left leg over the railing so that he had one on each side. It wasn’t uncommon for him to make small talk with customers, but conversations involving skinny dipping generally waited until the weekend. “I would’ve probably done it for fifty, yeah. That seems like a solid number,” he said with a laugh. “Not a fan, though? How come?”

“I’m pretty sure I don’t have to pay you anything to get naked for me. You do that on your own accord.” She smiled in a sneer, matter-of-fact way.

“That’s true,” he agreed, scratching the bridge of his nose to conceal a grin. “But getting naked for you doesn’t generally involve freezing water and pain. Y’know, usually.”

Leo was perched on the porch railing of the Surf Shack, occasionally sipping from a bottle of beer and enjoying the casual party-atmosphere on the beach below, where a bonfire had been started and people were jumping into the water, despite the setting sun. He turned to the person next to him and gestured towards the ocean. “Someone bribed me to go skinny dipping after dark last week,” he prompted. “I would’ve done it, but I think ten bucks is a little cheap to freeze any body part off for. How much would you have done it for?”

“God, I have a gym session tomorrow,” Leo groaned, one shoulder leaned against the doorframe. “My trainer’s gonna kill me, but come in. I’m starving.”

It was almost 3am - the witching hour. The park was deserted and the swings creaked in a gentle breeze. Lilith couldn’t sleep. She lay on her back on the roundabout, staring up at the night sky. There were stars in Savannah that she’d never seen before. This was the third night in a row that she’d spent wandering Savannah after dark; the apartment was too claustrophobic in the striking silence of the night. She could understand why insomnia drove people crazy in horror films. She was startled from her thoughts by the crunch of approaching footsteps and a moonlit silhouette appeared above her.

Normally, the only reason Leo would still be out and about at three in the morning would be if he were drunk and happy, stumbling back home with a friend or someone he had picked up at a bar, but tonight was... different. He was puppy-sitting for a neighbor, and the energetic little dog had been whining for twenty minutes to go out, so Leo dragged himself out of bed to take the puppy--Rufus-- on a walk. When he saw a figure laying on the park equipment, he cleared his throat. “You alright over there?” he asked, keeping a bit of distance.
