Blinded by Pride
This piece depicts a KKK member with his legs up in the air with his prolapsed anus, and feeding into the mouth of a man that is blindfolded with a standard pride flag.
For Pride 2019, I have elected to create a protest piece about the racism in the gay community and how in recent years it has been increasing in saliency, and how racism is still being discounted or ignored by those people that have chosen to wear the rainbow blindfold.
Queer people of colour (especially those that are non-binary and trans) have been purposefully excluded from the conversation of pride and queerness due to the desire to appeal to the mainstream. The gay community in its race to become accepted has copied the hierarchical structures of privilege, and has become accepting or complicit of racist attitudes so long as it is done within the gay context (which we validate implicitly or complicitly).
As a community we need to be more cognizant of the culture that we consume, the gay celebrities we prop up, and hold the people around us accountable for their actions and their beliefs. The moment individuals become complicit, they become apart of the racist problem that purveys the LGBTQ2A+ community.
