This is because while Eumaeus was feeding the pigs, some suitors had approached and started an argument—or rather, they were trying to insult him while he responded directly to them. The suitors didn’t like this, so when Eumaeus turned to face them, they pushed him, causing his back to hit the pen fence and sending him falling backward into the mud
