The female body plays a central role in my art. I often revise representations of female bodies that have been controlled throughout history with visions of strength. In all of my work, I start with basic human needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and touch. My imagery articulates connections between the natural world and the constructed world. Over the course of a 40-year career, my art has ranged from intimate drawings to public sculptures to street performances. Currently, I paint ink-wash onto tablecloths, handkerchiefs, and napkins â domestic objects from spaces traditionally dominated by women. Though I work with many materials, I favor traditional modeling and casting for sculpture. For instance, in my series, Supports, stacked table legs with gendered shoes evoke balance, holding together, and falling apart. Recent works on paper take on new lives as scored animations. My videos in past installations portray the imagined worlds of the silent, still sculptures. My inspirations span the body/spirit experience of medieval architecture to narrative aspects in the art of Louise Bourgeois and William Kentridge. Puppetry, Elizabethan poetry and Jungian psychology mix with other influences. I want to give life and solidity to primal desires. I reach for transformative visions that are tactile and mysterious, and that open us to new experiences. My commissioned sculptures respond to the architecture, history, and landscape in a given site. My large bronze, Colossal AcornHead, commissioned by Tufts University, serves as an example. This outdoor sculpture longs to be a real acorn, released from its surreal state of artistic abstraction and to return to nature. The sculpture points to human consciousness rooted in nature â that our âheadsâ and the earth are inseparable and symbiotic.
