To die is nothing; but it is terrible not to live.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
He was at the point, the last stage of despair when pain is no longer active; the soul, as it were, has grown numb.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
Unwitting innocence is sometimes more penetrating than cunning.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
He was no longer pale but deathly white, and instead of tears in his eyes there was a sort of tragic flame.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
When it's people you love, the words don't matter; the sound of their voices is enough.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
To love is an accomplishment.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
All I want is for everyone to be rich and happy.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
There is always a patch of blue sky to lovers, although the rest of the world may see nothing but their umbrellas.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
Last round of quotes all queued up!
Like most things, Les Miserables has an end. Because I never intended to quote the entire work, I have only posted the absolute best. This means I do not think I will be posting anything else after the final ten quotes or so. I will leave this blog here as an archive until I decide what to do next. Thank you everyone for supporting me and this blog! It's been a great ride.
Love is the folly of men and the wisdom of God.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
Cosette and Marius saw one another again. What it meant to them we shall not attempt to say. There are things beyond description.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
To feel emotion was terrible. To be carved in stone, the very figure of chastisement, and to discover suddenly under the granite of our face something contradictory that is almost a heart. To return good for good that hitherto one had held to be evil; to see a pincer become a hand with fingers that parted. To let go! The man of action had lost his way.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
He was forced to admit that kindness existed.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
He contemplated with horror the rising of a new sun--an owl requiring to see with eagle's eyes.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
I am now onto my last two index cards of scribbled-down quotables from Les Miserables. This is incredible! Thank you to everyone who has joined my in appreciating this work. Last lap now!
But his greatest anguish was the loss of certainty. He had been torn up by the roots. The code he lived by was in fragments in his hand.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
There are occasions when we find ourselves with an abyss on either side, and this was one of them.
