Garrick Club, 1831

The Garrick Club was founded in 1831 by a group of literary gentlemen, mainly to support those involved with the dramatic arts.

At the time of opening it was announced that the club would be a place where, "actors and men of refinement and education might meet on equal terms," where "patrons of the drama and its professors were to be brought together."

I am a member of the Garrick Club, and have been criticised recently for referring to it as a "gentlemen's club". Since May 2024, ladies have been allowed to become full members.

People often speak of being a gentleman, yet they themselves don’t truly understand why they should aspire to be one.

Flaunting one’s prestige is no different from begging for the respect and admiration of others.

Only those who do not boast have their merits recognized; only the humble can see their careers truly flourish.
