He just ticked his head from side to side and then shrugged. He wasn’t opposed to defending himself and had done so on numerous occasions while living on the streets, but to him violence was the very last resort. “Oh, yeah.. of course. Wait, really?  Two weeks? That doesn’t seem that long. Why would you die?”

“I mean, your funeral.” She offered, shrugging in return. “More like eleven days, really. Your brain becomes too tired to keep doing natural things, like making your heart beat and breathing without thinking about it. So you just.. Die.”

The bright light sent a shot of pain through his head, but he didn’t want to look like too much of a baby in front of her so he mostly kept the whimper in. “Okay, minor concussion.” He repeated. “Oh, no it’s okay all that stuff was from before. Just wish I remembered why I got beat down so I don’t do it again. Wait… wait don’t sleep? Like ever?”

Laura raised an eyebrow at his whine, but didn’t comment on it. The light was necessary and if he didn’t care enough to say anything about it, neither did she. “Or you could just.. Y’know, defend yourself next time.” She leveled him with an unimpressed look. “If you didn’t sleep ever you’d die in less than two weeks. I meant until you go to the doctor,”

“Yes ma’am” Zevi sat down. “But honest I’m okay. I don’t wanna be any trouble. Not worried about my memory overly much. My brain’s like a piece of swiss cheese all the time anyway.”

Laura took out her phone and turned on the flashlight, holding one of his eyes open and shining it in it to check if it would dilate. She repeated it with his other eye, then sighed. “I’d say minor concussion, but I’m not a doctor.” She snorted humorously at that, shaking her head. “I hope you don’t have gaping pieces of your brain missing. You might need more than a doctor for that. Still, don’t go to sleep or anything.”

“Don’ know what happened. I was just mindin’ my own business and then wham… and then.. I don’ know. Hurts little, but ‘m okay. My head is just all fuzzily.”

“Ugh, alright. Sit down, let me find out if you’ve got a concussion or not. I can’t help with your memory problems, though.”

Not moving to Russia when I got a chance is probably the highest on my list of regrets.

That’s.. a long story. I will say it was one specific event though.
