Notice that every time Charles enters Erik’s mind, Erik can sense that he’s there immediately, before Charles says anything; this is established in their very first scene in X1. Whenever Charles enters someone else’s mind, they don’t realize he’s there until he says or does something. Even Raven can’t hear him until he enters other people’s minds with Cerebro and announces his presence through them. But whenever he’s not wearing the helmet, Erik has no need for Charles to announce himself. Charles barely starts to close his eyes to focus before Erik says “you’re sneaking around in here, Charles.”

It could be that the reason for this is just that they’re soulmates. But my headcanon is that this also has to do with Erik’s mutation. Though he isn’t a telepath, Erik’s powers are still deeply connected to his mind. It is his mind that enables him to sense and control metal. While Charles mentally connects with other minds, Erik mentally connects with metal. Both of their mutations are internal and manifest through their minds. Therefore, Erik is much more psychically gifted than any other non-telepath - and I think that’s one of many reasons why they’re soulmates.

i know we joke about the only reason erik hasn't destroyed the world is because charles lives in it but i really do believe that erik's tolerance for humans only comes from his immense adoration for charles and his hope that the man he loves so deeply isn't wrong, that they can be reasoned with.
