i'm so sorry to make this anti merthur post into a merthur post but i need a fairytale ending to counter the devastating canon ending
EDIT: okay this is actually a bittersweet but hopeful ending!!! as a salve to soothe the canon ending's sting. please consider:
but maybe arthur chases after merlin. maybe he doesn't realize it immediately, maybe he tells himself he's hunting merlin to make him pay for his crimes.
he learns about magic while he does research to hunt merlin down and he learns about magic on his travels. he becomes obsessive just like how captain ahab becomes obsessed with killing moby dick.
maybe some of the knights and merlin's closest friends argue in defense of merlin, maybe they flee camelot because they can't serve under arthur after he's given his verdict. maybe some of them remain loyal, while others live in service to the kingdom but not the king.
after years of study and obsessively tracking his quarry, after seeing how all his interpersonal relationships have suffered after his condemnation of merlin and magic, arthur realizes that maybe merlin was his better half. he realizes that his anger and hurt are making him cruel just like his father.
over time he realizes that he hasn't been hunting merlin to kill him; he just wants merlin back.
arthur longs for how things used to be, before fear and heartache disguised as anger turned him cold and cruel and callous. his whole world turns on it's head again, and he doesn't know how to go on.
he's made his bed, and now he must lie in it. he's driven those he loves away, and all he can do is try his darndest to be better going forward. maybe he wants to legalize magic, but how can he possibly do so after this unholy crusade he's waged against magic, against merlin? how can he abandon the conviction he's had for his whole life?
meanwhile, merlin is on his own, constantly on the move and searching for meaning, running from the anger and hurt and sadness he feels after arthur's reaction to his magic reveal. maybe he does find others who love him, and he loves them too, but he aches for what once was. after years, maybe, his anger softens into resignation. he doesn't hate arthur, the man, but he hates the king and the kingdom that oppresses magic and it's kind.
and maybe--because of fate, the triple goddesses, the dragons, or merlin's own magic acting on its own accord--merlin accidentally reveals his place of hiding. arthur is able to find him through the magical shroud he's hidden under and traveled with. arthur comes to him like a sinner, begging on his knees for forgiveness. maybe he knows of merlin's power, or maybe he doesn't know yet. regardless, he wants merlin back. he thinks having merlin back will be his salvation. he thinks it'll free him from the misery he's been drowning in for so long.
but merlin isn't like the christian god. sin means nothing, neither does salvation nor repentance. emrys may be magic, he may be immortal, but merlin is still a man.
even if his heart forgives arthur, even if they're both flooded with relief, bearing hearts as if at confession, this isn't happily ever after. wounds take time to heal, and trust is a fragile thing that can't be forced.
arthur has become like his father in more ways than one. merlin doesn't forgive him, because arthur's regret does not absolve him of guilt. he has caused real harm, and although merlin cares for him, he will not accept any less than proper penance.
arthur works to repeal the ban. he works to right his wrongs. maybe he can never undo what's been done, but he does what he can. he tries to be a better king, a better friend, a better man.
and things may never be what they once were, but they're getting better. and even though mistakes have been made, and there are many regrets between them, they try. it's not a happily ever after, but time goes on, life goes on, and each day is another chance to make things better.
sorry to be all #hopecore on you, there's so much hurt in the world already 😭
i like to think that fantasy can be a blueprint for reality. be hopeful and keep trying!!! <3
