11 - Culpa et Laetitia

(Mare) 

I all but run through the hallway, closed followed by my guards until I reach my destination. I should stop to gather my breathing, but my mind is racing, and I pass through the guards and open the door to the courtroom. But I regret it immediately. Dozens of eyes are on me as I hear Volo Samos interrupts his sentence midway. They all stare at me for a few seconds before Maven speaks. 

“Mare?” He asks inquisitively. 

I mumble, panting, not able to find the words. 

“Who do you think you are,  girl ?” Volo interjects, with an angry voice. “You can’t just-.” Maven interrupts him. 

“What happened?” 

“Noth-...” Their glaring daggers at me make me nervous and I lose my train of thought. “I just need to talk to you.” 

“Is it urgent?” He raises his brows, but his voice is calm. 

Yes . 

“No.” I murmur. 

“So, go to your room, I’ll send someone to pick you up  when  I have the time.” He points to the doors behind me and lowers his head.

“Okay.” He immediately raises his head again tilting slightly. Oh.  My bad . I refrain from rolling my eyes. “Okay, your majesty.” 

Before I close the door, I can see him sighing and lightly shaking his head, but the corners of his lips curl up in a ghost of a smile. 

I come back to my room, sweaty from the running and my nerves so I take a shower and put on a simple short dress to lay comfortably in my bed. When they call for me, I’ll change to something more fitting to the court. I might be convinced to put on a show for the others, but I still have no desire to pamper myself to be in my room, alone.

As I imagine Maven it’s going to take long to send someone, I pick a book from the shelf and start to read it. I haven’t touched any of them since coming to this room, as Mareena, so I just randomly chose the book with the prettiest cover. It’s a book about Harbor Bay with pictures and stories of Ocean Hill. It’s a beautiful Palace, close to the water, with white walls and a sky-blue roof. It says it’s a royal residence and I wonder, looking at the pictures, if I… if  we  could move there and be away from everyone. Despite the images I start to get bored and sleepy, so I adjust myself to the pillow still trying to keep myself awake. Not even an hour goes by before I hear the door to the room opening harshly. 

Maven crosses the threshold and quickly closes the door behind. The temperature of the room rises instantaneously. He’s  angry . 

As soon as he lays his eyes on me, chest rising and falling rapidly, I feel his gaze trailing from my face to my body, barely covered in the dress and splayed in the bed. The look on his face, lingering in the exposed skin of my legs, makes my cheeks heat up so I gather a sheet to cover myself. 

“You said you’d send  someone  to pick me up,” I say, trying to hide my embarrassment. 

“I’m not supposed to be in your room.” He averts his eyes from me, voice rougher than I expected, the anger fading a bit, but the heavy breathing remains.

“Oh.”

10 - Nemo Malus Felix

(Mare)

The energy in the Palace it’s different.

With every trip to the barracks, I feel more confident about the path and the guards accompanying me. Maven follows me every time, coming to get me in my room and waiting for the maids to prepare me.

After a few days of continuous arrival of newbloods, I have a day to myself when I’m informed that the King has meetings all day and no new visitor arrived. I don’t trust the last part, more likely that Maven doesn’t want me to go by myself. Contrary, the other Silvers seem to have lost interest in it, as fewer and fewer of them arrive to watch them being presented. Lara Provos, Maven’s assistant, provides me with the list of their names and abilities and I keep looking them over and over. A giddy unusual feeling comes from their presence. Especially after meeting Tyton.

He called himself an electricon and I savor the word in my mouth. I haven’t been able to exchange a lot of words with him because I didn’t have time to visit their barracks yet. But the mere thought of having someone exactly like me in the Palace has made me impossibly excited. The prospect of training beside them, beside him, took my worries about my family from the forefront of my mind. I can’t complain.

After my breakfast, alone for the first time in the week, I tell my guards I want to visit the cells. They don’t question my requests anymore, just follow along wherever I decide to go, silently.

When I approach Cal’s cell, I’m surprised to see him on the floor, doing pushups. He’s shirtless and sweaty, with his back to the bars, counting his exercise. I shift uneasily, unsure where to look, trying not to stare at his scarred skin glistening with the faint lights of the cell block.

He has changed his clothes since the last time I saw him. Now he wears grey cotton pants, a shirt of the same fabric folded on his metal cot, and a pair of black boots below it. I suppose it’s prisoner clothes, but he looks as princely as I remember, even in them.

I wait for the guards to leave me alone with him and settle myself on the floor, with my back on the cold wall facing his cell. The last time I came here, he ignored all my attempted conversations. Making sure to avoid eye contact as well. 

When he finishes what I believe are a hundred repetitions, he gets up from the floor, moving to the metal table. I see there’s a plate of bread and some kind of cheese on top of it, seemly untouched. I expect him to go for the food, but he moves the plate to use the towel underneath it to take the sweat from his face. He drops the towel back on the table and speaks in a gruff voice, without turning his face to me.

“What do you want?”

9 - Juncta juvant

(Mare)

Visitors .

They are here. The newbloods. 

They  actually  came here. To the Palace. 

With my eyes closed, I take deep breaths, trying to control the electrified aura that appeared around me. I must have lost control of it while I was crying. 

After a few minutes, I feel my bolts quiet down. I’m still stunned by his words when I look up and see that Maven has his hand stretched out to me, waiting for mine to join his. I ignore it again and get up from the floor, trying to clean the dress of the dirt and leaves.

Whipping the tears and rain from my face with the smooth sleeves, I follow him inside without a word.

In the quiet walk through the halls, I think about what he told me. My family it’s gone, but they’re fine. They’re safe. They  have  to be. Maybe Kilorn got them in time, maybe they ran. I don’t know where they could have run to, but maybe Farley used her connections to move them. Kilorn would have asked her, I’m sure. 

But that doesn’t alleviate my worry because they’re not here, with me. Is it safer for them here? In the Palace? Or on the run? I’m not sure, but my heart aches with the feeling of not knowing. All I know it’s that there’s nothing I can do right now for them. Maven will have to find them, it’s part of our deal.

My family, the Guard, and Cal. 

That’s what he promised me. That’s why I’m marrying him for. But what do I do if he doesn’t find them? What can I do if he doesn’t honor his part? Do I leave? Do I refuse to marry him? The fear starts to grip my chest at this realization. How can I make sure he keeps his side of the deal once I honor mine?

Only when I bump into his back I realize we stopped walking. We are back to my room, where my guards stand by the door. Maven opens the door, steps aside, and looks back at me expectantly.

"I’ll wait for you in the hall." He says in a soft voice.

I blink in confusion. "Wait for what?" 

"For the maids." He says softly while looking through my outfit.

My gaze follows his down to my clothes. 

I’m wearing a simple purple dress I found in my wardrobe. No ruffles, no jewelry. I don’t know if it was supposed to be a sleeping dress, but I didn’t care. My boots and legs are still dirty from the garden, and my hair it’s wet and plastered to my scalp. 

After the inspection I glare at him, not bothering to even attempt to hide the disdain on my face. Does he believe I’ll wait for maids to pamper me to meet the newbloods? They are Reds, like me, they don’t expect pageantry. After a moment of silence, while he assesses my face, he sighs and moves again, leading to the stairs.

"Let’s go to the barracks then."
