Patti Drew - "Stop And Listen"
Studies / Anxiety
A feeling akin to withdrawal. It’s a pervasive sense of something being wrong. But that’s rarely your current moment. So much of this preoccupying concern is about the future or the past, and even if something is wrong in the moment, you are still yourself. There is an observing self outside of what you are perceiving or doing. It is a constant option for perspective and reorientation. Measured by the tolerable versus the intolerable, anxiety works on a spectrum. And there is sweet spot in there, where the right amount of anxiety is motivating, giving you a dose of pep to actually do something in the moment. Keep in mind a distinction from anxiety and neurosis. A lot of people take the edge off their anxiety say at a bar by a drink or two. This works, but it can be more interesting to not do that. I have a crush on a girl that works at a pretentious clothing store, and each time I window shop there, above all I notice how attractive she is, and then notice my heart rate quicken, my thoughts speed up, and the kind of anxiety that could cause action. It’s up to you.
Studies / Roland Barthes
Love this guy. He changed the way I think and view the world, like smoking weed for the first time. Grammar systems. His insight deepens the experience of just observing things. His body of work allows for dilettantism, or at least after you have a solid understanding of his fundamental principles. And they changed over time. He gave voice to alienating emotions. He redefined agency as opposed to existentialism. He is an example of how an artist needs a practice—to stay in practice so as to improve upon one’s work. I don’t pretend to understand all of his work or even remember what I’ve read for that matter; on the contrary, and in the spirit of his advocating of the pleasure of reading, I have just experienced his writing. That is to say you can insert yourself into his observations. He was a sociologist, after all, and his data was uniquely empirical. Barthes affirms the liberal arts degree insofar as the capacity of critical thought – the aim of a liberal arts education. He was hit by a bus and died. If that is a metaphor for something, he would have been the one to explain it. Love this guy.

Studies / Budgeting
Start with listing out basics. These are the things that, if not handled, you won’t just be remiss about, you will have your Internet turned off. Discretionary expenses are always the wild card. Savings show maturity and wisdom, and not having $80 for a friend to borrow is a bad look. The most fun part of budgeting is spending outside your means in one instance, say drinking or eating expensively to where enjoying a bar includes the lack of monetary concern. Buying coffee gets ridiculous when you think of how far that money could go. Budget lists can be written down on anything – the back of a book, an ATM receipt, next to another, previous budget list – in efforts to ascertain just where you are at. Always know the actual income you will receive after taxes. If you happen to collect something, like clothes or music, you will pretty quickly realize the limits of your budget, and that perhaps you are not living within your means. I had a teenager accost me late the other night, saying, you look like you have a lot of money, and I responded, I have $27.68 in my bank account. Budgeted the situation indeed.
