مهر

We have a word in Farsi, "مهر" (pronounced: mehr) that roughly translates to kindness. I was reflecting on this word today and wanted to expand on its relevance.

One of the phrases which uses the word is "مهرت به دلش بشینه" This phrase is directly translated to "May your love sit in their heart," and is a prayer or wish made for lovers or friends. We pray that your beloved loves you/ has kindness in their heart for you.

It's interesting, because when we love someone, we associate even their most negative traits with something positive. We choose to see the best in that person because we have a special sense of kindness in our hearts for them.

The مهر can turn someone's most viscous qualities into things we are willing to look past or even admire. In other cases, lack of مهر can cause us to see someone's most beautiful and incredible traits as something ill intended or malicious.

I just love that there is a word for this concept/idea in Farsi.

Like, me and my sister went to a museum, and they had an extra exhibit of butterflies. But it cost £3. So we sighed, walked past, then stopped. We each had £3. We could see the butterflies. And we did it was great. We followed it up with an ice-cream as well because Mum and Dad weren’t there to say no.

I was driving back from a work trip with 2 other people in their early 20s, and we drove past a MacDonalds. One of the others went “Aww man, I’d love a McFlurry.” And the guy driving pulled in to the drive through. It was wild. But it was great.

I went to a park over the weekend and I was thinking “Man, I’d love to hire one of those bikes and cycle round the park.” It took me a few minutes to go “Wait, I can hire one of those bikes!”

I guess what I’m saying is, those impulsive things you wanted to do as a kid - see the dinosaur exhibit, play in the fountains with the other kids, lie in the shade for 2 hours - you can do when you’re an adult. You have to deal with a whole lot of other bull, but at least you can indulge your inner 8 year-old.

maybe the purpose of life is to fill it with as many positive things as you can. regardless of how bad life gets, don’t let it steal your personality, your hobbies, your style. after coming home from a bad day at work maybe you need to sit down and read a nice book. after studying non-stop for so long, maybe you should finish that crochet project you’ve been putting off because you’re so busy. maybe we should prioritize the things we love, the things that make us happy, and not just the things we’re forced to do to survive. in this society, a little peace from the outside world is important. don’t give up on the things that make you happy. don’t forget about yourself.

there is a turkish saying that goes "ruhun ruhumda, ruhum ruhunda" which translates to "your soul is in mine, my soul is in yours". you see each other's souls as a safe place, as a shelter, as your own soul. your soul is a reflection of them and they are a reflection of you. two souls are intertwined and totally compatible that they build a strong bond. it's much deeper than being just a couple; you are one unity made of two souls who still grow individually but constantly water each other, who enrich each other's lives. and i think that's more than beautiful.

Just read that in Turkey some people don't say "I love you" instead they say "ruhum ruhun, ruhun ruhum olsun" which means "let my soul be your soul, let your soul be my soul" and that's so beautiful.

And in french they don't just say "I miss you" instead they say "tu me manques et tu me manques" which means " you are missing from me and I am missing from you" and I love that...✨

When things get tough, take a pause. Make yourself your favorite snack or meal, drink some water, stretch your body, have a warm bath, watch a fun movie or a comforting one, cuddle with a plushie or anything fluffy and soft. Do anything you like and finding comforting and reassuring. Hug yourself, embrace yourself. You need and deserve that. Remind yourself you are important, even if you can't see how. You are. The little things you do that you are not aware of, they are very important for someone. And for sure, they are for yourself. Keep going.
