“My father was a farmer and we had eight siblings. I went to Australia when I was fifteen because my family didn’t have enough to eat. I was on a boat for forty days. When I got there, I couldn’t find a job, I couldn’t speak English, and I had to sleep on the street. I know what it’s like. So everyday I drive the van to the port and hand out bread to the refugees. My son is my business partner. He says, ‘Baba, please. It’s fine to help. But not every day.’ But I still go every day because I know what it feels like to have nothing.” (Kos, Greece)
Everyone loves a good publisher’s binding, especially when it has such a vibrant cover! This copy of The Rose, Thistle, and Shamrock is particularly unique as the spine has turned white, presumably from exposure to light over an extended period of time. This particular book of English poetry was published in 1874, and is a 5th edition.

Lovely!
“ISIS looks for any reason to punish you. If they saw me with my face shaved, they’d punish me. If they saw me with these jeans, they’d punish me. Two of them walked into my electronics shop, and they asked me why my beard was so short. I tried to make an excuse about having just returned from vacation, but they said: ‘Come with us.’ I begged them to forgive me, but they took me to the judge and I was sentenced to three days of digging tunnels at the airport. They told me that they’d come get me when it was time. When they came to my house, I was hiding, so they took my neighbors instead. Everyone they took that day was killed by American planes.” (Lesvos, Greece)

Wine Wednesday: This strong but not overly sweet sangria is nicely spiced with cinnamon, anise and cloves and it has just enough crushed red pepper to give it a tiny kick.
Recipe: Rosé Sangria with Cranberries and Apples

Me: Agua. Tierra. Fuego. Aire.

Every day is Halloween.
My first project for senior portfolio consisted of all these still life studies! My objective was to get some material for my graduate admissions portfolio.
I think I learned a lot, especially about oil paint, and I’m pretty happy with the final still life oil piece!
Next up (maybe): portraits!

I am in the 1% of the population with this, but I really do not enjoy summer. I love winter, like… if you are cold, you can put on a hoodie, you can grab a blanket and snuggle…. Like… when you’re hot, what do you do? Rip your skin off?
A team of scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston made news earlier this month when they published research in the journal Biomaterials describing how they’d created the world’s first bioartificial limb in the laboratory.
Or, in other words: scientists have now grown the entire forelimb of a rat in a lab.
Dr. Harold Ott, head of the Ott Laboratory for Organ Engineering and Regeneration, and his team were able to “engineer rat forelimbs with functioning vascular and muscle tissue,” according to the hospital.
The scientists used a process called decellularization. They removed the living tissue from an existing rat limb, leaving just a “framework” — made of things like proteins — behind. Then they re-populated that “scaffolding” with new, living cells.
This may be an important first step leading to the eventual creation of functional, bioartificial limbs that could be used in transplants. That could be a step up from existing prosthetic devices.
