NEW PROJECT<2025 'BRIEF SWIMS'
The same instillation video but if you plug in headphones in each ear you can hear the two audios that would be playing. It’s just an easy way to show both perspectives at the same time.
FINAL CRIT
I meant to post this earlier but it’d didn’t go through but this is the video from the last crit
Shots from the instillation.
FINAL PIECE!!!
Sooooo installation timmmeee. This video shows how the viewer is meant it engage with the piece. The optional headphones means that either you can listen to the music or listen to the narration. However in a gallery or public setting there wouldn’t be enough headphones for every person , therefore only a certain number would be privy to the narration, making the whole thing more intimate.
I also like the headphones because for ages I was stressing about not having any clip of me dancing because so many people said they liked the contrast but actually if the viewer has headphones they become the person on their own! The headphones create a further split between the public and the private, so that even in a public setting there are still some excluding from an experience.
The mirrors serve a dual purpose as when I was dancing I was always dancing in front of the mirror and I always felt a stronger sense of self with that. Having domestic mirrors reflecting dance crowds again plays with the context of the piece. Usually it’s just us dancing in front of our bedroom mirror but this piece turns these mirrors into part of the crowd, further blurring the lines between the lone state or dancing and that of the collective.
Having the piece in a bedroom also emphasises this play on context - how I’ve presented the video is how so many of us feel when we dance. We feel transported, we have memoeries and flashbacks or when we danced with others and it creates this mindset where we’re not in our bedroom anymore.
The narrative is still made up from different accounts but this time talks about crowds as well. Even the narration plays with public/private as on first listening one wouldn’t assume it’s made up of 30 odd different people’a opinions.
I think turning the piece into something physical really changed it around in a major way and I’m happy. It’s still limited in some senses (the room didn’t perfectly curated and I would love some more mirrors) but I think it’s a great turn around from what it was last Thursday.
Test for final piece - looking at how to present the ‘mental pictures’ I think I need to make it a lot more blended, more ambiguous what you’re looking at.
Test for instillation- I decided that having a screen wasn’t enough and I needed it to be experienced rather than watched. If the viewers just watching it they’re passive - they’re watching someone else have a good time.
I used a projector and mirrors on the bed to reflect up on the ceiling. My plan is to stick mirrors round the room to create a surrounding atmosphere, something to engulf the viewer, help them escape!!
They are some serious Joan Jonas vibes here which I think is cool.
Previous work from before just after Christmas, I was experimenting with how we remember things as not necessarily clear visions, but as colours and audios and blurry thoughts. I was experimenting with projecting this and Cece asked if she could dance in it and I said yes.
Looking at this it’s still important to me that the fun part of the video is still something you could dance to if you wanted and not completely overwhelming.
Jenny Holzer
Jenny Holzer’s projection work makes me think I should try putting text into the video. It fully elevates things like poetry that’s otherwise read in a much smaller scale. If I’m playing with internal and external, taking internal thoughts and turning them into a visible thing could further strengthen this I think...
“Holzer now thinks of herself mostly as a reader, rather than a writer” - The New Yorker - I fully relate to this; I can’t write myself (I’ve tried many many times but I can never find the right words). Instead I find phrases that other people have written/spoken relays what I’m trying to way more.
The narration in the videos has always been well received in the crits and I’m wandering whether having the text on the screen as well will be good?. I’m going to do a screen test to give it a try but I think maybe not. the reason I originally kept them as only audio is that they’re meant to be thoughts and it doesn't make sense to see thoughts? unless it does? I don’t know I’ll just have to see what I think.
teamLab (f. 2001) is an art collective, interdisciplinary group of ultratechnologists whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, design and the natural world.
teamLab is something I looked as because similar to how I was looking at things like dopamine and serotonin and ‘collective effervescence’, it’s looking at that connection between art and science. It’s a good example of how you can create a really foreign environment through only video and mirrors. The main difference is I want my work to be more than just a space, I want it to be an experience, a journey type thing. I think maybe there needs to be some kind of narrative.

IDEAS IDEAS IDEAS
Doing more research into installation and the environments they can create has me thinking that if I wanted to explore the idea of internal/external private/public, what if I made a space that was essentially the inside of the mind?? you could use different viewpoints like dancing in my bedroom and dancing in a crowd do some cool editing stuff.
I could have it so the viewer’s confronted with a video of me or someone dancing on their own, just a screen nothing fancy, then they enter this space and its just this crazy intense thing. ???
moving forward that means making video thats purely how I feel when I dance. I feel like this could be far more successful as it gives a single focus, a single direction which will hopefully result in a more successful piece.
using ripped videos would also really blur the barrier between private and public? I think thats what a lot of this is going to be. its putting my inner private thoughts into an external public space, but using public videos to show my private thoughts? the audience believe they're stepping into something special and private but actually the stuff I'm presenting is accessible to anyone?
Artwork page for ‘Liquid Crystal Environment’, Gustav Metzger, 1965, remade 2005 Liquid Crystal Environment consists of five projectors, each with a single slide containing liquid crystals. The projectors are equipped with rotating polarising filters and a cooling and heating system that cause the liquid crystal to liquefy or freeze, creating psychedelic effects of shifting colour and form. The work was first realised as a performance and recreated in 2005 for the Summer of Love exhibition at Tate Liverpool. Metzger worked closely with electrical engineer Adrian Fogarty to simulate the 1965–6 projections, fabricating custom built control units and creating software to …
“auto-desctructive art” - the concept behind the piece isn't directly linked to my work but I think the form it takes is really interesting. putting something temporary and unconsidered on the big screen.
I think that’s something I want to do with my piece. It’s taking that environment of a crowd that’s so special but maybe not explicitly appreciated in an outside context. I want to make that a forefront thing.
post crit I've realised I really screwed up how I wanted the audience to interact with the piece.
All this time I’ve wanted to give some kind of experience and what I did is the opposite of that - just showed someone else having an experience with the viewer watching.
I want the audience/viewer to be met with something. I want to give them an experience. I want to put them into a space. I don’t want them to be a passive viewer, I want them to be am active participant? does that make sense? I want to give them a space to let go to dance!!!! thats what I want !!! I realise that now. Thank god for technology disasters as this would never come to the surface if I didn't have to spend the whole night battling to make some rubbish make shift piece.
I want to create a space that replicates that feeling of being in a crowd. when you completely forget about your problems and there’s one collective mindset. the beautiful thing about this is if I get rid of the parts of me dancing on my own, the viewer can fill that space. they won't actually be in a crowd so technically they’ll be dancing on their own in their own little bubble, which is what the me videos were about. this way I can convey both things but the audience comes up with the alone part on their own?
it does back to that idea of habitats, how we have our own little ecosystem in the club? its an environment of its own. social land art lol
a quick reference to a piece I did end of February? I think this piece still highlights the social strength of dance. How even though the musics kinda dodgy, we can still have a great time with mates. Definitely before FMP started and I just realised how similar that style is from what I’m doing now. Key difference is this ones focus is on the idea of music rather than dancing. The dancing is the product of the music, however I’m sure this video had a massive sub-conscious influence on my work now. I think video is something I’m becoming more and more drawn to as a medium and I’m interested to see where it goes after FMP.
Thinking about my final piece, I’m trying to figure out what specific things I want to show. I love the idea of including the crowd, but it’s just about finding a nice way to put it with the alone dancing stuff. In my head they don’t connect. It seems wrong to have two elements in a film - in my head it should either be 1 or 3, not 2????
I think I need to stop thinking about them as two separate things and just put them under the umbrella of dance. That way I can tackle them at the same time.
What do i want the viewer to get from this?
I want to simulate what we feel when we dance - the feel good part, but also the cathartic part.
I’m actually really pleased with how this video turned out - not necessarily because it’s successful or anything but it’s a big step in terms of technicality which I know isn’t everything but now I know how to do more complex stuff I feel I can really push this project.
While the split screen idea was interesting, I still wanted to have more authority over what the audience was seeing. so instead of splitting screens, splitting audio has actually become really interesting. The original idea was to simulate what it would be like if there were two sets of headphones so the same video would have different audio options and therefore different effects.
I like the idea that some/most people would only experience one version. It’s like dancing with others vs. dancing alone - completely different but both still valuable in their own right.
But listening to the audios together also has a really interesting effect. It’s like when you have a really busy mind, you try to focus on one thing and you can’t quite do it. having them both again adds to the intensity of it. Audio is definitely something I’m going to have to keep playing with.
The narration was written by people who answered a survey I sent out, not by me. I think having multiple people contribute to a piece of text is interesting. It’s like the text itself is a dance party - lots of great individual parts that come together to make something bigger than themselves.
