7 Things You Need to Master For the UPCAT
Since malapit na ang UPCAT, here are some tips from upcat.tips
1. Multiple choice test-taking skills With 86,000 students who will take the UPCAT, only the multiple choice type of exam is feasible for UP. Even a simple, 5 sentence essay would be impossible to check. With this come opportunities for students to take advantage of.
In multiple choice type questions, always remember: The correct answer is among the choices.
This concept works well with problem solving as you can use the choices that fit the question rather than spending time to systematically solve the question. Wording analysis and item elimination are also techniques to answer questions you don’t know how to answer.
Some people would argue that using these techniques to find the correct answer defeats the purpose of testing the knowledge of a student. But then again UP is looking for the best and brightest students in the country; and effectively breaking down an exam is a clear sign of intelligence.
2. Effective Use of Time There are only 2 types of students who do not run out of time in the UPCAT.
The first one is the geniuses who by all means should qualify for UP. They usually become the Oblation Awardees and Intarmed Candidates. They take the exam, finish before the time is up, and simply have nothing else to do but wait for the time to finish so they can answer the next subtest.
The other type is students who have simply given up on the UPCAT.
If you are one of the former, then good for you, I just hope you’re not one of the latter.
For the rest of you, speed and time management is the key.
Never spend too much time in a single question and skip the more difficult ones. This way, you’ll be able to answer more questions in the time given. If you finish early, then review until you run up the time.
We have developed a technique for students to manage their time effectively in the UPCAT, as well as an entire system to prepare a couple of days before the UPCAT.
3. Knowledge on Math, Science, Language Proficiency, Reading Comprehension Tricks and tips for passing an exam are there for you to help you recall information that you already have.
Even if you master the art of test taking, I doubt that you’ll be able to pass an Engineering Board Exam right now because you’re not yet equipped with the knowledge for taking the board exam.
The good news is that you are equipped with the knowledge that you learned throughout high school. What you need to do is to refresh this knowledge by putting in review time. The tips and tricks will help you recall that knowledge during the exam.
4. Mental toughness Some students seem naturally confident in taking an exam while others seem to easily be rattled when they encounter a difficult question.
Mental toughness is important in an exam because it can affect your ability to recall information. The good news is that mental toughness can be trained.
Preparation is your first defense, when you enter an exam fully prepared and confident, you’ll feel that the UPCAT will be a breeze. When you encounter a difficult question, simply skip that question and go back to it later. Losing composure on a difficult question is not worth missing out on the easier questions. And as vice versa, gaining composure when you answer easy questions would help build the confidence you will need when you tackle the more difficult items.
5. Physical and mental endurance Exams are tiring.
The UPCAT even more so.
Very few students have the mental endurance to focus for more than an hour. The UPCAT is 3 hours of concentrated effort. I think the mental endurance needed for taking the UPCAT is a test in itself as UP students need phenomenal mental endurance to survive in UP.
Surprisingly, most people don’t associate mental endurance with physical endurance.
Well, they are connected.
Building up physical endurance also builds up your mental endurance. And in the same manner that physical endurance is built through consistent practice; mental endurance can also be developed in as short as a week.
My tip: Simply, focus in class for an entire week.
The mental endurance developed will be more than enough to help you get through the UPCAT. As with most things, this is easier said than done, but when done properly, this will greatly help your concentration during the UPCAT or any major exam.
6. Management of external factors You cannot really do anything with external factors while taking the UPCAT.
Factors such as temperature, noise, or a smelly seatmate (yes, believe me, there is such a situation) are things you have to accept might happen.
Though uncontrollable, there are a few things that you can do to manage these external factors. Simple things like visiting the exam room prior to the UPCAT would prepare you for the possible temperature or noise you may encounter during your UPCAT. Allergens could be held at bay; bad smells during the UPCAT, a simple handkerchief would solve it. The simplest actions could manage external factors from affecting your exam rather than being rattled by it.
I have a saying during exams: “You’re only distracted when you can’t answer the exam not the other way around.”
7. Filipino Being the University of the Philippines, you should expect that the UPCAT has Filipino questions.
Some students cry foul with the inclusion of Filipino questions.
Instead of wasting your effort complaining, polish up on your Filipino instead.
The Filipino questions are easy enough that all you need to do is read well written Filipino literature and refresh your grammar. As with all the tips here, the underlying tip is PRACTICE.
Final notes:
The exam is not just about what you know. It is a combination of knowledge, conditioning, technique and practice. Mastering the skills mentioned above will surely give you the edge to pass your entrance test.

13 Ways to Beat Distractions and Stay Focused at Work
By Laura Schwecherl | Greatist.com
Not From Concentrate? The Need-to-Know In the office, nearly 50% of American employees say they work for only 15 minutes before becoming distracted, while 53% report wasting an hour or more a day because of disruptions. From constant noise to overflowing inboxes to feeling fatigued or stressed, almost anything can cause people to lose focus.
Attention span varies widely between people, but 20-somethings may be at a particular disadvantage. With the explosion of the Internet and text messaging, many Gen Yers may be dealing with shorter attention spans built-in. And hey dudes, listen up: some research suggests men have a harder time focusing than women and are more likely to suffer from attention span issues.
Turns out, brain structure might also be to blame for a wandering mind. The prefrontal cortex is the area of the brain that regulates attention span and handles our emotions. So any strong sentiment, from frustration with a boss to being angry with a significant other, can be a case for distraction. Still, people aren’t born with a mind in complete disarray. The brain works hard to stay attentive: one study found that when listening to boring people, the brain prevents us from losing focus by “rewriting” speech so that it sounds more interesting and we’re more apt to pay attention. (So that’s how we survived lectures in college.)
Zoom In: Your Action Plan It’s possible to find flow — or effortless concentration on and enjoyment of a task — by tackling a challenge that’s meaningful and manageable. Having a job you love with a reasonable workload makes achieving flow a lot easier. But regardless of the task at hand, there are lots of useful tips that can help people stay focused on their work and make the most of the day:
Pinpoint the problem. What causes you to lose focus? Is it fatigue, hunger or a Twitter addition? Figuring out the issue is the first step toward trying to fix it.
Plan ahead. Envision what the workday will look like before it happens. Write down what things need to get done or what you want to accomplish. Setting goals can help people stay on track.
Eat a good breakfast. A bowl of oatmeal may do more than jump start metabolism. Studies have found that eating breakfast can improve attention and concentration, too. Here’s what the experts say you should eat in the morning.
Meditate. Scientists have discovered that meditation may enhance certain brain functions linked to attention. It can’t hurt to try shutting everything off to get more done in the long run.
Work offline. One survey found nearly 60% of disruptions at work come from email, social networks and cell phones. So for tasks that don’t involve the Internet, try using old-fashioned paper and pen — perfect for brainstorming! Put your phone on silent and check email only occasionally (try once every hour). Limit time on social media too. You can “like” your friend’s picture of his dog later.
Do smaller tasks. Some psychologists suggest that our brain works way too hard to process incredible amounts of information. So working on one large project can be overwhelming — like trying to plan a whole event at work in one afternoon. Split up projects into individual tasks so they’re easier to accomplish.
Time box. Work on one project for a specific amount of time, rather than working until something is finished. (Write emails until 2 p.m., instead of stopping at inbox zero.) This way we know we can work hard until a certain time, and then be able to take a break.
Clean up. Anything from Post-Its to pretzels and family photos can become a distraction. Clear off the workspace and have out only what’s needed (laptop, notebook, water-bottle — check!) to help stay in the zone.
Try an app. Discard any distractions with a little help from technology. Certain apps can block websites (so long, Pinterest) or black out computer screen backgrounds so only one program is in view at a time. There are web tools that can calculate how much time is spent on websites, too. (Now that could be scary.)
Reward yourself. A little motivation can go a long way. Say, “After I finish this page, I’ll go buy a cookie!” (Try these vegan delicacies.) Watch that to-do list vanish in no time.
Take little breaks. Getting to the office early, working through lunch and staying late doesn’t necessarily mean getting more stuff done. Short bursts of hard work followed by quick breaks can be more beneficial than never taking a breather, since the brain may just burn out.
Wear headphones. At Greatist we practice the “headphone rule”: no one’s allowed to talk to someone who’s wearing ear gear. It’s a great way to show you’re working on something important and don’t have time to chat. (Sometimes I don’t even have music playing — my secret!)
Try caffeine. Coffee or tea may help people feel more alert and able to concentrate in the cubicle. If iced coffee isn’t your cup of…coffee, try chewing gum, which may help increase alertness too.
How to Stay Focused
By Zain http://www.topuniversities.com/
Here are some simple study tips to help you stay focused:
1. Set study goals First things first; start with the basics and set your study goals. Ask yourself why you are here, at university, possibly (like me) having travelled across the world for this opportunity. Having fun is certainly one answer, but not the primary one. Knowing your objectives completes half the job.
2. Make a study timetable Once you know what you want, the next step is to prepare a weekly study timetable. Set a routine for everything. Your timetable could include the time you should go to bed, the time you should have your meals, and – most importantly – the time you should spend on studies. There is no hard and fast rule and you should of course allow some flexibility depending on how things go. But establishing a routine is essential, and do try to stick to your study timetable as best as you can.
3. Learn to say no Now, I am not asking you to give up all your social activities, but you have to take some bold steps. If you dine out daily, it is better to limit this to one day per week, which will help you save some money as well. If you go to the cinema every week, try to cut down to once a fortnight. If someone is asking you to accompany them to hang out at the mall when you know you should be studying, tell them you’re busy – and let them know when would be a better time. In short: learn to say no when you know you really should.
4. Stay focused on your priorities Self-help is the key here. No one else is going to stop you from doing what you want, but you’re the one who will face the consequences if you fail to meet your targets. Remember you are at university for a reason, and if that reason is lost nothing else will fit well in the equation.
What I do to stay focused is keep a diary with me. I have written all my study goals and priorities in it and when I have spare time (while waiting for the train or travelling and before going to bed) I take a thorough look at them. You could do the same, or even paste some posters on your room’s wall.
Follow these study tips and stay focused on your goals, and you should find you’re feeling more confident about your studies – as well as still being able to enjoy all the other aspects of student life.
Being me doesn't easy and funny.
I need to accept that one day when I grow up, I'll gonna be alone.
5 Tips For When You Feel Like An Outsider or Like You Don't Belong.
What to do when you feel like you just don't fit in
By: Catherine Pratt www.Life-With-Confidence.com
1. Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself Often it’s really only your own mind and emotions that tell you that you don’t fit in. You may actually fit in fine, you just think of yourself as an outsider. It definitely doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
It’s important to know that feeling like you don’t belong isn’t always a bad thing either. Emily Dickinson wrote a poem called, "I'm Nobody! Who Are You?" where she describes how being an outsider can actually be helpful. It can allow you to concentrate on your own ambitions and goals without feeling like you have to conform to other people's standards. You can do your own thing. You can read Dickinson's complete poem and an analysis of why it's good to be an outsider here: http://authspot.com/poetry/poetry-analysis-11-im-nobody-who-are-you-by-emily-dickinson/
Remember, it’s the people that are unique in this world that make the biggest impact and usually have something truly special to provide.
You don’t want to change yourself just to fit in with a certain group of people. That's where a lot of people go wrong. They end up wanting to gain approval from others and end up losing themselves in the process. You have so much more to offer by being true to yourself. So, don't limit yourself to being the same as everyone else. Challenge yourself to be the absolute best you can be.
When you feel like you're not fitting in, ask yourself if it's because of what you're thinking? Are you thinking thoughts like:
I'll never be good enough
I'll never fit in
No one likes me
Thinking thoughts like these doesn't help you. All it does it get you stuck feeling bad about yourself and you have no way to move forwards. These thoughts may not even be true. It may be just because you continue to tell yourself these thoughts over and over that they become true for you. So, if you catch yourself thinking one of these thoughts, turn it around and ask yourself questions like:
What do you really want?
What do you really enjoy doing?
How can you explore those things more?
What steps can you take to start moving your life in the direction you want? These kind of questions will get you out of feeling negative about yourself and will give your mind a way to think of some positive action you could take. You'll be able to see that you do have incredible power to make changes in your life.
2. Get Comfortable in Your Own Skin
It's okay to be different. In fact, it's usually a really good thing. Think about the people you admire most in the world. Do you admire them because they're the same as everyone else or because they fit in with everyone else? No, you think they're amazing because there's no one else quite like them. They're unique and they're proud to share that with the rest of the world.
There is only one you in the entire universe and it may be time to explore that person and figure out what you like and what makes you happy. Also, figure out if you’re self-sabotgaing yourself with your own limiting beliefs or feeling angry all the time. You truly are a special person with your own amazing gifts, thoughts, and ideas. Get to know yourself better. Accept who you are and then start to appreciate all the things that make you so unique.
When I first started out to get comfortable with myself, I gave myself the goal of “to be happy, healthy, positive, and to develop and maintain an inner peace.” I had to search deep inside myself to figure out what was going on and why I wasn't happy with myself at the time but it’s definitely been worth it. Once you explore those feelings, you can then let them go and move on from them. You also become much stronger and wiser by going through this process.
The other great thing about getting comfortable in your own skin is that you'll find you fit in more. The better you feel about yourself, the more people will like to be around you. One of life's secrets is that you have to respect yourself first before others will respect you.
After you've become comfortable in your own skin, you may even end up asking yourself later why you ever wanted to fit in with that particular group of people. You'll have moved so far beyond where you are now and see that you have improved so much more than the people you originally wanted to fit in with.
The other benefit of learning to be comfortable in your own skin is that you’ll be more accepting of other people and open to new ideas and concepts too. New and exciting opportunities will become available to you. The same can't be said for those too afraid to be seen as different than everyone else.
You’ll probably also start to find other people who have the same encouraging attitude about life. You’ll be able to go through life enjoying every moment because you’re comfortable with yourself and understand yourself. You’ll be more focused on your experiences, your goals, and the beauty you see around you rather than worrying about the opinions of a few people.
3. Let Go of Past Anger Sometimes it’s because of past hurts that we repel other people. We’re so angry at people that we can’t relate to anyone or only expect the worst from others. Once I figured out how to let go of my past, I became much more comfortable being me. I found it was easier to get along with other people. Maybe because I didn't care as much what they thought of me but more likely just because I think people are more affected by the "aura" you give off. So, if you're angry all the time, most people will avoid you or you'll end up only attracting other people who are always angry too. Let go of your anger. Or use your anger to tell yourself that you can overcome anything.
4. Focus on Your Wants and Desires Instead of focusing on the problem that you don’t feel like you fit in, try turning it around and focus on what you do want. What do you want to explore, what goals do you have, what do you want to learn? Ask yourself these questions: • What is your biggest dream? • What activities would you love to try? • What places in the world you would you be thrilled to visit?
Then go and do it. There are so many incredible and inspiring things in this world to explore. Focus on the positive and the beauty of the world rather than getting caught up in a negative situation. Answering questions like the ones above will provide you with so much more fulfillment than trying to figure out how to fit in. If you just try to fit in, you’re probably not being true to your real self and you won’t be happy for long even if you do manage to fit in. If you follow your true passion, you'll not only be happy and love being you, you'll also gain the respect of people you never dreamed possible. For some ideas on figuring out what you want to do with your life, read the article, "Try a Life Direction".
5. You’re Not the Only One It’s very easy to feel like you’re the only one who ever feels this way but I’d be willing to bet that just about everyone on this planet has felt like an outcast at some point in their life. You're definitely not alone in having these feelings. The next time you’re somewhere where you feel like an outsider, take a look around, there is probably at least one other person who feels the same way you do. How about going over there and saying, “Hello”? You just might make a new friend.
