Chapter should be coming in the next few days, but here's a preview
"Did you mean you'd die for your father?" Ellen didn't answer, but her shoulders shook. She bit her lower lip, trying to keep her composure. She was getting closer to the truth, but there was one more question she had to ask, no matter how afraid she was to hear the answer. "Did you mean you would kill for your father?"
Ellen's head shot up. Cassandra had desperately hoped she would deny it, that she'd be mad, that she'd yell...but all she could see in the younger girl's expression was the look of a girl who'd been caught doing something terrible.
It was exactly what Cassandra had feared. "You did, didn't you?" she asked. "You meant that you'd kill for him."
Ellen bit her bottom lip. "I meant both," she admitted in a small voice. That look in her eyes, that fear, that guilt...it was a look Cassandra knew all too well. She saw it in her own reflection, day in, day out.
No. Not again. It was too late for her, for Stephanie, for Tim, for Damian. It wasn't too late for Ellen. "You don't mean that," she said, shaking her head. "You can't mean that. You don't understand what that means."
"Don't tell me what I do or don't understand!" Ellen said. "I've watched people die!"
"You have," Cassandra admitted. "You know what death means. Do you know what it means to kill someone?" Ellen took a step back towards the dumpster, but Cassandra followed her until her younger girl's back was against the dumpster. Cassandra was so close she could see the freckles that dotted her nose and cheeks. "Do you know what it means to watch them die?" It's just another game. Until it isn't. "To see their fear? To feel their pain?" It only takes a second to strike Faizul. A second that changes everything. "To watch the life leave their eyes until there's nothing left?" Terror...and then nothing. "To know that you did that to them?"
Ellen swallowed, then her eyes darted down. Cassandra slammed her palms flat against the dumpster. "Look at me!" she hissed. Ellen's face paled, her eyes went wide. She was afraid. Cassandra almost pulled back, almost apologized, but she needed to stay firm. She needed to make her understand. "Are you willing to do that to someone? Can you live with yourself, knowing you've done that to someone?" Ellen might have opened her mouth, but for a moment, she disappeared. For a brief flash, Cassandra saw another girl standing before her. A little girl in a pink dress. A little girl in pigtails. A little girl with blood on her hands, blood that could never be washed away-
Cassandra blinked. "What?" The little pig-tailed girl in a pink dress was gone. Ellen stood before her, her eyebrows knit. She was no longer afraid. She looked like she was trying to read Cassandra. "What did you say?" Cassandra asked.
Ellen said nothing at first, then her eyes widened. Realization. "You've killed someone, haven't you?" she asked.
