The illustration really does drive home the event that happened, in my opinion. It shows a single bird, surrounded by others. They are all the same, but one is obviously being targeted or singled out. And that is exactly what happened. It’s not that there is anything different about Justine, she is just like everybody else. But one small joke (although in bad taste) caused millions to turn on her. Millions of people that are probably just like her, and who I’m sure have made morally wrong jokes in the past themselves. So yes, the illustration does enhance the article, and it gives a great perspective on the situation.

“Why can’t I sleep?”

Pretty much explains itself. It actually makes me pretty uncomfortable that I made something this creepy.

This data visualization show a chart of people who have migrated to the Netherlands. Each different colour represents a different nationality of people, and shows they’re migration into the Netherlands over time. It is also interactive, which is a big plus. When you mouse over any given colour, it tells you all the specifics about that colour such as which nationality it represents, and all the numbers that go along with the information. The design is very successful. The bright colours catch your eye, and the almost 3D look to the chart itself really captivates your attention. It is also quite a simple idea, and not only does it look great, it conveys the information exactly as it was meant to.

Simple outlines so far. Planning to add colour layers to better represent everything I have going on throughout the project. Lots of motion, keeping it all fast paced and interesting. I'm also using a quite sketchy drawing style in order to better portray motion and actions throughout.

Another portrait from the little photo shoot me and Jill had. I love the depth of field on this one, as well as the contrast between the darker colours in the foreground and the lighter colours of the background.

A photo of my girlfriend, Jill, for this week's journal. As far as lighting goes, I just used the natural light of the sun. I played around with saturation and curves for my post-production editing, as well as a little bit of exposure. I really like how this picture turned out, and I love how her red lipstick stands out against the less bright colours.

I figured this picture pretty much sums up how university has been for me so far. Tired, run-down, and hungover. So that's exactly what I tried to capture in this shot. As far as post-production editing, I played around with contrast a bit, as well as levels to really bring out the darker colours. I also dropped the saturation slightly, and, although there was already some lens blur from the original shot, I blurred the background a little more to add a little more focus to myself. I used an intense light source from the left side (my right side) in order to cast some shadows on my features. I also made sure there was no light coming from in front of me.

In this picture, I focused on depth of field. As you can see, the decoration in the front slightly contrasts with the lamp behind it. And both the decoration as well as the lamp contrast with the curtain in the background, which is quite blurred. If this entire image was in focus, then there wouldn’t really be any part of it that stands out. The focus adds depth to the photo. Hence, depth of field. It brings out the foreground of the photo, and makes it more interesting. It gives our eyes something to focus on, and adds emphasis to that part. It’s a very important tool in photography, and can really change the dynamic of a photograph when used.

A YouTube banner I made for a friend's music channel. He left the ideas up to me, as long as it said "Stay Sleezy". I also got to experiment with some cool smoke brushes in Photoshop for the first time. I can see myself using them a lot more in the future.

When choosing my books, I looked not only for books that relate to New Media, but also books with covers that appealed to me, and ones I thought I could work with. The books I chose actually proved to be more difficult to work with than I thought, and I had to give it a few attempts before I finally found a design I liked. I chose to do more of a grunge style, which is quite the opposite of what I usually choose to do. Switching it up was fun and challenging, and I like how it turned out.
