With Tiny Libraries, Bringing Free Literature to the Streets

A joint project of the PEN World Voices Festival and the Architectural League of New York, the libraries were designed and built by the winners of a small architectural competition, stocked with donations from publishers and looked after by nearby community partners including the Cooper Union, Henry Street Settlement and LaMaMa.

The Levinski Garden Library, in Tel Aviv’s Levinski Park, was created by Yoav Meiri Architects in collaboration with Arteam as a “social-artistic urban community project.” It boasts some 3,500 books in 14 languages.

SALT explores critical and timely issues in visual and material culture, and cultivates innovative programs for research and experimental thinking. SALT Research sources diverse fields of knowledge and provides outlets for thought within the fissures and crossovers of different disciplines. The institution’s research projects expand beyond linear chronologies, medium-based questions, and the traditional separation of fields of study. SALT assembles archives of recent art, architecture, design, urbanism, and social and economic histories to make them available for research and public use. These resources will be interpreted in the form of exhibitions and discussed in all other areas of programming.

For the opening act, NYPL Labs digitized about 1,000 early 20th century theater programs from 5 microfilm reels and, working together with curators, built a tool for transcribing them. The Library needs your help capturing key information about the performances these programs represent. Stuff like: theater name, location, show title and date -- as well as details such as cast lists, production staff (and the beautifully, sometimes hilariously, antiquated advertisements found throughout). The entities you transcribe will be compared with the submissions of other users to form a "consensus document", which will contribute to a crowd-vetted directory of historical performance in New York (and perhaps beyond)!

1,100 photographs taken by relief workers during the immediate postwar period. The Holocaust Museum uses this website to identify these children, piece together information about their wartime and postwar experiences, and facilitate renewed connections among these young survivors, their families, and other individuals who were involved in their care during and after the war.

Magic Tate Ball is a new location-based mobile app from Tate, inspired by the iconic Magic 8 Ball, where players shake the ball in search of an answer to one of life’s mysteries. The difference is, when you shake your phone, this clever app presents you with an artwork that is linked to your surroundings. Using date, time-of-day, geographical location, live weather data and ambient noise levels the app will trawl through a selection of artworks from Tate’s collection for the best match.

Local Projects was tasked with growing new audiences through technology for the Cleveland Museum of Art, and created "Gallery One," a suite of new interactives that transform the Art Museum experience. Visitors can explore digital versions of the artworks, gathering ideas, and seeing the original context of the artworks themselves.
