レジャーシートを敷いて、二人で横になった。たまに空を仰いだり、たまにお互いにこっそり見たりしていた。

「何見てるの？」と何気なく聞かれたら、目を合わせながら、あからさまに嘘をついた。「木星やで。耳の後ろからひょこっと出てるし、無視できひんほど明るいねん」

彼は片眉を面白そうに上げて、「そうか」と笑った。

「あんたを見とんでって言って欲しかった？」

「いや、別にそうでもないけど、木星の他に見えるものが色々あると思ってただけ…。まあ、あるというか、いるというか、どっちでも」

私はクスッと笑って、後を言うように促してみた。「たとえば…？」

「俺を見て」

と言われたら、目を逸らしたままにしていた。同じことを繰り返されれば繰り返されるほど、さらに意地を張らずにはいられなかった。全身に乱暴的に走った電撃痛の余波を乗り越えて、最初の衝突で撒き散らされた考えの欠片を一個ずつそろりそろり拾って改めて纏められるまで、毛布をギュッと握って、呼吸を整えるのに集中しようとしていた。今でも目線が右側の壁に落ちたことだけぼんやりと思い出せる。

「ね、こっち見てよ」

うるさいな。

今回は本名でちゃんと呼ばれたら、親が駄々捏ねて私に八つ当たりしないように、アイツらの機嫌にはどんな微妙な変化があるのか、ずっと敏感で慎重に監視しなければならなかった私は、まるで一回だけで足りなかったかのように、３回連続で母に呼ばれてから、やってほしいことをついに言われたのにある皮肉が頭に思い浮かんだ。こんなときに親に思い出させるなんてすごく気まずかった、とは言うまでもない。

「今という時間を大事にして、お互いに心が繋がっていると感じるように、もう目を逸らさないで」

落ち着いて我に返るまで何分要るのか、見当が微塵もつかなかった。その言葉が表にどれだけ綺麗に聞こえても、私の耳に響いたのは裏に潜めていた図太さだけだった。救いの手を差し伸べてくれると思っているの？そう言われるからこそ、さらに頑固に目を壁にじっと向けて死ぬまで続けたくなった。しかし、その誘惑に負けたら、今以上叱られる結果になるのは否めない。

否でも応でも何かの手に捕まられて放心状態の深海から急浮上させられた。

「待たせてごめん。五分間必要だった」

「どれくらい要るって、最初からそう言ったらよかったじゃん？」

最初から私は人見知りで不断から親友以外誰とも目を合わせるのが苦手だということがわかっているんだろう。または、都合よく忘れたふりをしているかな？

「いや、今やっとわかったんだ」

「俺はどれほど心配しているのがわかってるの？君がずっと無言だったからこそ、どうすればいいか迷っていて、正直ってさ、何をやってみても、君に不快させてしまうしかない気がするよ」

おかしいな。私もちょうど同じこと思っていたんだが、実際に言ったら、向こうの機嫌を悪くさせるに違いないので、やめておいた。

「こっちもびっくりするほど本当に痛かったから、しばらく喋らなくなってごめん。次回もうちょっとゆっくりと進んでみたらどう？」

「ゆっくりって言ったら、もうできるだけ頑張っているから、これ以上は無理。次回は君が仕切って自分でやってくれ。全部好きなようにすればいいから」とだけ言っておいたらあまりにも素っ気ないので、「ね？」とも付け加えてにっこと笑った。

「そうですね」と私は笑い返した。

二人で恋愛関係に入ったのに、この寂しさって何なんだろう。

パン屋さん（抜粋）

大学を卒業したばかりの私はどうにか自活しなければならなかったので、食品化学の学士号だけで就職しようとして、パン屋で働くことになった。大学の専門とはめっきり異なったのがわかったので、面接の間に必修の調理実習で習得した経験でわざと訴えようとしたが、仕事に就くことにはそんな素朴な一言が利くだろうとは思いもしなかった。少なくとも、乗り気だと見なされたら良かったな、と。

同期の辛島（からじま）みきが、祖父の和菓子屋で生まれ育ったので、米粉や餡子の何種類でも知り尽くす上に、手先も器用に違いない。本物の「几帳面」と「真面目」とされる性格だった。彼女には一生涯敵わないと何遍も思っていた。

人手不足によりこんな風に大学を卒業したばかりで未熟な二人きりに店の運営を任せるのは、誰にとってもおかしく見えるだろう。責任が重すぎるのではないか。と言っても、仕事で努力し続けたのは、仕事がどれほど辛くても我慢するしかないと自分に言い聞かせてまで、働きながら経験をさらに積むことができるからだ。上司が言った通り、このパン屋で働くことにより、様々な役割を味わうことができて将来にどんな役職を狙いたいのかはっきりわかるようになると思い込んでしまったので、上司の期待に応えるようになんでもやってみようと覚悟を決めた。とにかく、当座のところ先任者が転職するまで、五ヶ月間重なった雇用期間を精一杯生かすしかなかった。様々なレシピや手続きを努めて書き留める上に、先任者ほど手際よくできるように実習にも励んだが、先任者の二年半間蓄えた経験に、自分が五ヶ月以内に追いつくなんて無理だろう。

私が担任する番になると、まるで上司自身が耳元で囁いているかのように、「様々な役割を味わえる」という一言の不気味な余韻に浸っていて足がすくんだ。その言葉遣いの図太さを改めて思い知った。「様々」より「万事」、「味わう」より「担当する」という現実を突きつけられた。パン屋の運営ができるようになるため、実際に経験するということより効果的方法なんてないだろう。さぞかし様々な責任を負わせられてからどの役職が自分に合ったのかはっきりわからないはずがないのだ。

行き掛かり上、パン作りだけではなく、接客や在庫管理や商品開発や衛生検査の準備まで、たまに特別注文や配送や指導も、仕事を二人で分担しても、諸々の物事を順次より同時にこなさないと済まない日々は切りがないと思っていた。

そのため、このまま二人きりでいる限り、食品化学とお菓子屋さんの経歴を組み合わせて、お互いにもたれ合うしかなかった。共同で店を営む時間を過ごせば過ごすほど、お互いの考え方や境遇を徐々に理解できるようになってきた。少なくとも、全部順調に進んでいけるように努めるという共同の目的で、職業上の関係にしては懇意になれてきた。

仕事を家に持ち帰ることも多かったとは言うまでもない。今何もしていなくても、いつも次のやるべき事を考えている悪循環なんだ。寝不足で早く起きるのが辛い朝にしても、かろうじて出社できた。寝ぼけたままさっそく朝の準備をしようと思ったところに、前夜遅くまで残業していた辛島さんが帰宅した前に、私が使うつもりだった材料をすでに調理台に置いてくれたのに気づいた。今朝店に入ってから、私は会釈して「昨日ありがとうね」と声をかけた。

「ううん、自分の準備をしたついでだからさ」とみきは何気なく答えた。

そのため、新しい人をもうすぐ雇うところだと上司に予め断られた上に、その新入店員の内の一人がパン製造技能士の二級、二人は特級合格者だという情報は、たちまち将来を照らす光になってくれた。喜んで新入店員たちに案内したり、うちの店に特有な手続きをつくづく誘導したり、どんな悩みに対しても心を込んで相談に乗ったりしてあげた。

他の人と協力することはもちろん一人でも仕事できると期待されている職場にすんなりと溶け込むはずだ。周りの人にあまりにも頼りすぎるより、ただ色んな資料も参考にして自分で進めるように努力してから結果を振り返って自分でやり直すにすぎない。私たち二人もこんな風に育てられたから、みんなと全員力を合わせたら、鬼に金棒ではないか。全体的に生産性を上げることができて、救われる。

私は生地をこねながら、半時間寝かせる前に他のと取り違えないようにラベルを貼っておこうと思ったが、ペンなどが手元にどこでも見当たらなかった。しばらく探そうとして調理台から調理台へ移動したあげく、見つけられずじまいだった。「私がどうかしてるのか」と思いながら、知らないうちにレジまで着いて、マジックの山を発見した。

みきは私が目を擦ってから二度目したのを目にしたら、「りえ、どうしたの？」と尋ねた。

「ペンとか探していたんだけど…」と私は言い切ったところで、マジックの山に眼を落とした。

みきもたちまち慌てて、エプロンのポケットに手を突っ込んで探り回ってみた。「おかしいね…普通に使っているペンも一体何処？一番好きな青いヤツは？」

「みきが昨日残業していたとき、他に誰がいたの？」

余程毎日重役出勤と共に早退する習慣のある鈴木（すずき）先輩と、上司に媚びるために無遅刻無欠席で理想の会社員を装って毎日定時的に退勤する黎（れい）先輩を消すと、富沢（とみざわ）先輩しか残らなかった。

自分で全く最後まで使い切ったバニラエッセンスの瓶を手にしながら、何食わぬ顔をして「ねぇ、今暇でしょ？じゃあ、追加で注文してくれる？至急お願〜い。今すぐ要るんだから」と何気なく頼んだ天然な富沢先輩か。「これから何かの材料を使おうと思ったら、まず残っている量を注意しておこう」という忠告でさえ、彼女にとって長すぎるだろうし、脳にぴったりと収められず、右の耳に入ってからすぐ左の耳からはみ出す。

みきと私は「マジかよ…」と「さすがだね」といった目つきを一瞬で交換した。

私たち以外誰も気づかないだろうが、マジックの山を一本ずつ数えて、調理台ごとに同数のペンを配って、どの調理台に所属するかを示すために相当する色のマスキングテープをそれぞれのペンに貼ることにした。すると、道を迷ったか見捨てられたペンに目を留めるなり、元の場所にすぐ戻すことができる。その日からも、ぺんたちがレジの傍に置いたマグカップを別荘にしてオーブンなどからその辺りで避暑に来るのをしょっちゅう見かけた。みきと私は、毎回みんなを導いて帰宅させる季節の移ろいだった。あたかも夏と秋しかない異世界に引き込まれて、その狭間で延々揺れていたようだった。なぜか夏の方がいつも長く感じたのだが。

「まるでこのパン屋なんて小鬼に取り憑かれているようだね」といったみきからのセリフは、ずっと記憶に残っている。確かに、小鬼も一緒に暮らしているだけにこんなおかしい事ばかり起こっているんだろう。他にもいたら、必ずさらに困ってしまう。三匹まで増えたら、どれくらい耐えられるだろうか。

正解は、三年間このパン屋さんで働いていた挙句、四月に二人で同時にやめることにした。もうおそらくずっと前から気づいただろうと思うのだが、ご推察の通り、修羅場はパン屋ではなく、研究室だった。契約が終わり次第、単純に仕事をやめさせてもらうということではなかった。上司の依頼が、四月というより、いかにも死月と呼べるほど山のようにあった上に、相談や手助けを求める連絡の形で、十二月にこの短編を書いている私と、みきにも時折届けているほど溢れ出してしまった。その水に爪先を少しでも浸し次第、一生消えなく染められてしまい、一生逃げられない。

研究者のあるある

自分の特別なネズミの様子を見に行くことにした日には、ビバリウムに入って周りを見回ったら、他のネズミの親子が檻の中に身を寄せ合ったまま残られたのにすぐ目を留めた。たちまち情報カードでみんなの誕生日を確認してから、みきと私は二人とも同時に眉を顰めてあきれた顔をしてしまった。普通は生後二十一日で性別によって子ネズミを別々の檻に分けるということだが、うちの先輩たちのごたぶんにもれず、担当者の鈴木先輩は、あたかも神の手が天国から降臨してネズミたちの手入れを手にかけるのを待っていたかのように、自分の繁殖のコロニーを全くそのまま放置した。神の手か、ただの検査技師の手か。実際にはどちらなのか、きっとわかったって、鈴木先輩自身だって携帯から手を離さなくて自分の仕事でも取り仕切らない限り、別に気にも留めない様子だった。

みきがもう二つの檻を持ってきた。私は、小ネズミを一匹ずつ尻尾をつまんで差し上げて、肛門性器間距離によって性別を突き止めて、みきにも見定めて相当の檻に分けてもらうために渡してあげた。

「雄」か「雌」というより、私は単純に肉眼で見えることを大声で宣言して、みきも同じ語気で確認してくれた。

「ペニス！」と私が言うと、みきは一目見てから「ペニス」と頷いて雄用の檻に入れた。

「ノーペニス！」と私が言うと、みきは一目見てから「ノーペニス」と頷いて雌用の檻に入れた。

手を取り合うといつも通りに万事が絶好調で、分類と片付けが程なく完成できた。帰宅すると、今日の経緯を彼氏に片っ端から語った。一瞬感を置いてから彼に向かって目をじっと見据えた。

「ペニス？」と私がそっと呟いたら、彼はやんわりと微笑んで真剣に取り合ってくれた。しかし、紛れもなく「ペニス」と頷いた彼を私は雄用の檻に入れるよりも、ただ晩ご飯を作ってあげた。

「現在の研究者の生活を当分辞めてから英語の誘導助手に転職するからといって、特に担任の検査技師であるお前は、プロジェクトを進めるための仕事を避けることができるわけではない。去っていっても、仕切るわけではないんだろう」

「みんなってさぁ、誰でも忙しいし、お前にはただ時間管理能力の問題じゃないか」

一ヶ月間、即ち私の最後の一ヶ月には、諸々の論文誌を調べてから原稿をかろうじて一回どころか二回整えて、別の論文誌に提出した。会議で発表するために自分のポスターを作り上げる同時に、生徒がポスターを作ったり発表したりするのは初めてだったため、指摘や修訂の悪循環を避けることができなかった。自分の送別会を取り仕切させられた上に、皮肉なことに他の皆の好みに合う献立を考えなければならなかった。アンケートで決められた皆の集合的な決断を打ち合わせで言い出しただけだったのに、「今度こそ実際にいい考えで始めようか」と冷評された。それにもかかわらず、依然として自分の送別会を開催した。検査技師の後継者に、私が今まで三年間身に付けた技術の中で、単純にどこでも学ぶことができるわけではない特殊な技術をまとめて十一日間教えてあげた。最後の日には、同僚と一緒に二十匹のネズミに網膜下注射を与えて（同僚と私だけの間で顕微手術を四十回行ったということで）、上司の命令に従うために、大学院生にも練習として四匹を預けて注射させてあげたのは、私たちが立ち去った後に、未熟な後継者には、顕微手術を自分ですることを気にかけず、実験しながら誤りを犯してしまってもまたやり直す余裕があるのだ。原稿状態まで依然として及ばなかったプロジェクトについて、図を作って研究方法や今まで得られた結果をざっとまとめる下書きを後継者のために書き残した。中旬に別の新しい研究室に引っ越させられたため、同僚が準備の責任を背負った（当時の私は後継者に手を離せず誘導してあげていた）が、最後の日、扉を出た直前、案内するように私と一緒に頼まれた。真夜中まで半時間前に、二人とも別々の人に上司の依頼が満ちる長いメールを書き上げて送る羽目になった。

月末には、研究の会議のポスターと違って、同僚と私が教壇に立ちながら自分のプロジェクトをまとめて説明させられたとき、皆の前で上司は「この子（同僚）は医学士と共に医学博士の取得ために〇〇大学院に進む」とあっさりと誇らしく紹介してあげたが、「その子（私）はまず一年間留学してから、え〜っと、どの大学院だったっけ、まあ、大学院で勉強を続けるんだね」と曖昧に口ごもった。

会議では最後に会った日までにも、私がこれから一体何勉強するつもりなんだろうか、実際にわからなかったか、又はわからなかったふりをしていた。私と目を合わせずに同僚たちに話し続ける上司に、告別の言葉を口にする機会すら私にはなかった。それどころか、原稿を三回目としてまた修訂して提出してくれないか、と強硬に強請られたのは、上司の方が、仕事をすでに辞めた私よりも、忙しかったから彼自身なんてできない、と。

三ヶ月間一回希死念慮や放心状態になってしまう悪循環を断ち切るのみらず、「そんなパターンによると、いつ抜け出せるか見計らうことができる上に、ちゃんと働ける時間を生かすこともできるじゃないか」と言われていたのも、やがて締めくくってきた。

横顔

君のことを考えるたびに「気が長い」や「親切」や「楽天的」などという言葉がすぐに思い浮かんでくる。

借りてもらった上着を着ると、そばに居ないときにも、まるで遠くから温かさを与えてくれるような余韻に浸らずにはいられない。

私に対してだけではなく、周りの環境にもそういう性質が続くのをずっと傍観している。

サークルのメンバーを見守ったり、みんなを家まで送ったり、何か起こっても機嫌良く対処したり、友人の悩みを理解や共感できるまでひたすら聴いたりしてくれる君の姿が遠くから見える部分は、横顔しかないのだが、

ただ二人だけになるときも横顔を覗くのが好きになってしまった。

私の好きな本を読んでみるし、私の母国語からの言葉を見かけるたびに単語帳に書き取って時折にパラパラとめくるし、食事後に皿洗いをしてくれるし、行きたいところに連れて行くし、私をのんびりと待ちながら椅子に腰を掛けるし、いつも面倒を見て大切にしてくれるね。そんなことを観察するのは、だいたい横顔から。

そばからくっきりと見えるボサボサ髪のことで、君がため息をつきながら愚痴をこぼすが、私が思わずにはいられないのは、どれほど柔らかくふんわりとしたのか、と。

前髪がたまにくるんとなってしまったときも、可愛いなぁと思うしかない。

目線が唇の直前にぽつんとたどり着くまで、鼻筋をなぞって滑り降りて、いつもありがとうと言わんばかりに口付けをするために身を寄せようと考えるのは、もう何回目だったっけ？

目尻からのちらっとした一目で、私が見つめすぎてバレたということがわかってきた。笑顔をどれほど噛み殺そうとしても、かすかな微笑みを浮かべてしまうことにより、とどめを刺す。

次は、私がこのままで好きだし、私のことをもっと理解できるようになりたい、と言ってくれると、

私も時間が経てば経つほど君のことについて詳しくわかることが増えるのを楽しみにしている。

横顔だけではなく、いろんな場面でいろんな顔を見たい、と。

多芸は無芸

私は心の奥底で本当に何者なのか。

と自問したとはいえ、諸々な経験をしたのに聞きかじった程度しか知らないやつだとしか自答ができなかった。

前世ではピアノを弾いたり詩文を書いたりするのを楽しんだとふざけるようにしょっちゅう言っているが、実はただ小学から高校までの期間だった。いかにも素朴で無邪気な子だったんだ。今や、練習の機会が一か二回しかない私はもう前と違ってショパンを滑らかに弾くことができないが、楽譜を見る限りにぎこちなくなんとかできる。母が十年間レッスンにお金を注ぎ込んでくれたのに、なんて恥ずかしいだろう。依然として弾けると告げる権利があるのか。「弾ける」と言うたびに「けど、しばらく練習していなくてごめんね」とも付け加えることになった。

家で両親とベトナム語を話して育ちながら、英語しか話さない国で学校に通って、大学に入る数年前に日本語の勉強も始めたが、「お前のベトナム語が訛りとか文法的には英語っぽい」「英語の話し方は遠回しすぎて、お前が何か言い出す前にいつも一瞬の間を置くのは、何も思いつけないアホではなく、ただ考えを纏めているだけだと時間がたつにつれてわかってきた」と直接に言われた上に「シャイすぎて日本語をあまり話さないけど、たまに何か書こうとすると…まあ、それはごく稀だけどさ」と、会話がギクシャクに進むと相手の戸惑う眼差しで察することができる。

今尚辞典を手許に置かないとこんな文章を書くことができないのは、言葉のうろ覚えの癖がある所為なんだ。「石鹸を風呂から流し台に移動しておいただけなのに、母に甲高い声で悲鳴をあげられた」というのは、元々頭の中でただ「石鹸を風呂から流し○に移動しておいただけなのに、母に甲○○声で悲鳴を○○られた」というだけだったが、辞典で登場してきた言葉を目の当たりにしたとっさに見出し語の中から言いたい単語を抜き出すことができる。日本語を勉強すると、意味・読み方・書き方という三つのことを覚えなければならないのだが、本を読んでばかりいる私は今まで意味と漢字を認められることでどうにかやっていける。その所為で会話でさえ、相手が構わない限りに、私は携帯を取り出して、読み方を忘れたのに何度も見たことのあるからなんとか書けるようになった漢字を指で描いて相手に画面を見せてあげてから、まるで言葉の読み方をそもそもずっと覚えたかように、話をさりげなく続けることが何度もあった。日本語を実際に話すことができるのか、この私は。こんな間抜けなことのために手間取るのはどれほど恥ずかしいのではないか、と毎回心の中で嘆くのに、異様な手段でさえ相互理解となっていくため、結局別にどうでもいいんだろう。

この間、手作りのクッキーをゆっくりと味わっていた彼氏がとろけそうな笑顔することで、私も最初は喜んだが、恥ずかしくて目をそらしてしまった。

料理が上達するように励んだ期間は元彼と付き合っていたときだった。仕事の後に一緒に晩ご飯を楽しむために、和食やフランス菓子の作り方を身につけて、自分の職場をたまに早く出て、予め夕食の支度をしてあげる習慣があったものの、別れるよりずっと前に、アイツの分が冷めてしまうまで放置させたことが何度もあった。私が悪くなかったのは、予定を守ることができなかったのが私の方ではなかったからだ。

今の可愛らしい彼氏を見つめながら、いつか私のことに飽きてしまうのは単に時間の問題だろう、とうっかりと口を滑らせた。彼がどんな優しい答えを与えてくれたか、私はさっぱりと忘れてしまったが、もう一回言ってくれるように頼んでも、彼は苛立つどころかおそらくあっさりともっと褒めたり慰めたりしてくれる。かまってちゃんでいたくないから、放置しておいた方がいいかもしれないが。

精巧なフランス菓子を作る経験で養われた手際が網膜下の注射のような顕微鏡下の手術にも当てはまることができると思っていた上司は、私がそんな技術もあっさりと身につけることができると最初思い込んだが、「投薬してもらうのは患者ならぬ単なるかわいそうなネズミなので成功率の七十％で十分ではないか」と結局ニヤリと突っ込んだ。どういうわけか網膜下の注射の講習を求める人にしょっちゅう頼まれているのは、きちんと教えてあげるかどうか疑問を抱かせてしまい、個人的に微妙な雰囲気をもたらすことになった。三十%の未熟という意味が仄めかされているなんて面白いんだろう。三回に一回ぐらいやらかしてしまう先生の指導を本当に仰ぐことができるの？とりあえず今のところは、たまに俄然ぞっとした手の震えを抑えかねる所為だと言い訳しておく。しょうがないと言わんばかりに。

大学院に必要な志望動機書は、ただ具体的に私が書いていたものであると同時に親友と恩師との間の競合を象徴した。私がこれまでどんな人生を送ってきたのか、これからどのように成長したいか、もっとも効果的で風流に伝える文章に取り組んでいた三人の藻掻き。親友は、私がどれほど大したことないと思った諸々な経験でも含めることにより、総合的な主観を与えることができると訴えかけたが、然るに恩師は、自分の専門知識を示すために実験の目的と身につけてきた技術と詳しく説明しようと言い聞かせた。読書会みたいな部活や趣味も付け加えさせてもらえる場合は定期的に開催されている限りだ、と。まるで私がそんなにあてのない子だから自分の能力に疑念を抱かれるのも無理はないかように仄めかした、と親友は非難した。私が手の二本でしかない上に、気になるゆえに少し試したことのある様々な経験がほとんど取るに足りないと言わんばかりだ、と私は思った。こんなバラバラで断片的な存在でどうしたらいいのか。自己同一性の修羅場にはすでに嵌っていなかったとしたら、もうすぐ陥りかねない。

だが、誰にも言えない気がした。ましてや親密な関係があるはずの両親に。

分別をわきまえた親は、父が何回も誇らしく言った通りに、父の方だったはずなのに、私が今や思わずにいられないのは、父は現実的に考える力量があると自慢に信じながら真実から執拗に目を背けているなんて情けないのではないか、と。

自由に行ったり来たりしていた父の姿をしょっちゅう見ていたのに、私もたまに出かけたい気分だと許可をもらわなければならないという矛盾をいつか認めていただけると嬉しいのだが。私が単純に十年以上食べていなかったお菓子を買いたかっただけだとわかった上に、一緒に買いに行けると約束したにもかかわらず、「あっ、実は、明日、明日行こう」と何日も繰り返していた父は、永久に先送りすることができないのもわかったはずなんだろう。

こんなに愚かなことで喧嘩を売り出すことにより、向こうの方がいかにも愚かであることを証明するのではないか。私は単純に父の機嫌の変わりやすさに対して自分の不安を言い表しようとしたが、言ったことを曲解され、ただをこねられる必要なんて微塵もなかった。ここ数日間の招待に対して実際に行きたくないとそもそも素直に拒んだ方が、そんな風に癇癪を起こして「余計に外食するのが結構好きだなぁ」と嫌味ったらしく私に言いがかりをつけるよりも、礼儀正しいと思うのだが、さあ、どうだろうね。私には何とも言えない。

「別に好きなわけではないけど、家から出るのがそんなにイヤだとしたら、早く言い出した方がいいじゃないかと思っただけだった。自分も自炊するための用事をちゃんとしておくよ」と言いながら、昼ご飯を作り始めたところで「材料を片付けろ。お前はそんなにたまらなく出かけたいのか？全部元に戻して、行け」と噛み付けられた。

「食ってかかっても役に立たないのよ。私が小さい頃から母にもずっとあんな風に八つ当たりしてるんだろう？」と何気なく聞いたら、「だから今や一人で暮らしていても、それがどうしたっていうんだ」と投げつけられた。

「もしかしたら、私も年に一回実家に帰る理由と一緒なのかなぁ」

「もう大人だろう。自分の車を買って、いつでもお前が好きなように行ったり来たりして。俺とは関係ないから、どうでもいい。お前を迎えに行くのが大嫌いだ」と最後に言ってから、謝罪しようとしたときに「確かに噛み付けるのは役に立たないけど、それが俺って人間だよ」と言い分したのはいかにもダサかった。

最近、口をきかない間柄になるほど幼馴染とも口論してしまったのは、思いがけないことだというよりも、起こるべくして起こってしまったんだ。父に対しての感情にそっくりだったのは、私の考えをきちんと整えて視点を何回も言い返そうとしたものの、認めてもらわずに相手の主観をぐいぐい詰め込まれた。芯まで劣等感に冒された奴が相手をそんな風に自分より劣っていると見做し、辛辣に罵ったりすることにより、自分の立場を守ろうとしていたが、実際は惨めに藻掻いている弱虫だけだということが私にはわかったので、そんなに意地悪く扱いされるのをなんとか耐えることができた、何年間も。

とは言っても、私も臆病者だろう。充分に励んでいなかったくせに家族と親友の関係を守ることができないと思われるのが恐ろしいから。

ー少なくとももう一回話してくれないか？

数年間繰り返し話し合おうとしていても、理解してくれることが一切ない上に、私が逆に理解してあげないとぎゃあぎゃあ愚痴をこぼしてばかりいるからそもそも完膚なきまで無駄じゃないか。

限界のない人なんていない上に、私があいつらの親ではないためちゃんと育てて礼儀を教えてあげる責任もないのが、なぜわかっていないんだろう。

自分の怒りについてこんな風にずけずけとするのは、確かに初めてなので、びっくりさせる可能性も期待していた。向こうのように鬱憤を晴らすほどではないのが一目瞭然だろうが、性格がそんなに歪んだ相手にそう思われてしまってもしょうがない。もう取り返しのつかないところまで来させてしまったから。

生物医学の博士課程に進む大学院生として結局受け入れてもらった私は、親友と恩師以外誰も知らずに申し込みを内緒で用意して志望動機書を書こうとしていたとき、今までどのように成長してきたか回想することにより、大変だったときからの記憶も蘇らずにはいられなかった。避けようとしても無駄だということがわかったため、代わりに別のエッセイに入れて書くことにすると、こういう執筆になってしまった。

と、書き上げたとたん、携帯の通知音が急に鳴って、画面を見ると、また大学一年生の物理学の宿題を手伝ってあげるように私に頼んでいるメッセージがやってきた。往復って、ね。
